Tiger Construction: Sagat Match-up Thread

Almost as if in response to my earlier question about how bad the E.Ryu vs Sagat match up is, Bonchan immediately switches to regular ryu to fight Daigo. I guess the match up is especially bad because this is the first time i see bonchan switching characters in a tournament.

His set vs louffy and both against tokido were just amazing. Check it out in the Red bull kumite if you haven’t already. This dude just makes Sagat look way better than he is. Much respect to the skill he’s got.

Evil can 400 you from one (safe) fireball string with 2 meter that’s easy to confirm. That’s the big difference, Ryu can’t eat you up in two plays, not from the range Evil can. Evils walk speed is also better at shutting Gat down.

I play a bunch of Akuma players and they try to do the same thing, akumas not about mix up now he’s about zoning and burst damage. He can actually zone very well.

Yeah, i’ve seen how Tokido uses Akuma’s far stand fierce to extend combos. I think it’s well deserved for Akuma though, considering his primary tool was removed in ultra and his health has remained the same.

I don’t think tokido plays the match properly , he eats too much AA damage and counter pokes. In contrast to Daigo when he plays evil Ryu, he basically never leaves the ground. This is obviously helped though by Evils better cr.mk.

Akumas low health means you cant take those kind of risks, but who the hell am I telling Tokido how to play match ups !

Yea Tokido also rarely ever anti airs Bonchans jumps either which I found interesting. He must be too focused on the ground.

Not going to bother looking through 16 pages, 4f safe jump in the corner for whatever reason you would want to safe jump.
Forward Throw, Back dash, Fake Kick, Jump Forward HK

Nice one. Another variation is forward throw-forward dash- stand hk - neutral jump mk.

after watching gamerbee beat ryan and bonchan with his Adon, I’m even more of a believer that that matchup is still not in Sagat’s favor (even with the delayed wakeup advantage). Even though the match against bonchan was close, it was obvious that Gamerbee was in control most of the time and bonchan had to make some crazy reads to catch up.

That standing roundhouse is serious and jaguar kick just messes things up given sagat’s size.

I don’t think this match was ever Sagats favour, at least not from my point of view. I think it’s drifted in and out of even though.

I only watched it live, I’ll have to watch it back but a couple of times Bonchan tried to Ultra gamerbee on reaction with Ultra but got Ex knee. The commentators didn’t seem to pick up on it though. I’ve done it myself as a counter but on a high pressure situation it’s top end stuff. He ended up getting counter hit a lot.

Adons main threat is that his jump arc coupled with his throw game favours really close play that we find tough to defend against. It’s hard to auto correct him, with him having instant overhead and air jag it’s just a torrid time trying to keep space, tack on the Ultra and you’ve got one hell of a battle.

Bonchan should really invest in an alt that covers these guys or at least an. I’d imagine momochi and Daigo would have both slaughtered him also in their form. The disadvantage Bonchan goes in with against these characters is significant for me ( ken /evil) It’s inspirational to see him stick though.

It’s tough because you want to play your best character , but lots of players are switching it up to gain an edge back.

Adon has always beaten sagat since super and always will. It’s not the mixup game, it’s his pokes and ability to ignore sagats fireball game. Adon can have a coffee. post it on instagram and still have enough time to react to a fireball with ultra.

It’s tough the amount of adjustments Sagat has to make against these characters, it’s hard enough trying to space out against de kappa , Adon, Cammy etc without having the added bonus of an Ultra also.

Saw your match against PL , I didn’t think he would of made it that far, I thought you’d beat him but I could see you were rusty.

My sentiments exactly, the recovery of TS makes it a non option against these full screen ultra characters in general. Chun, Dudley, Adon, Bison they will smoke you because they dont need to fall for a fake out, they actually have the time to see the shot get fired and then input their ultra.

It’s especially bad with Adon because of that stand roundhouse.

I hear what you’re saying Highland, one of those was when bonchan did the ultra to catch a jaguar tooth fakeout and got ex knee and the the fake jaguar tooth ended up landing on sagat’s head.

The match was only close due to bonchan playing well. I have always had a tough time against Adon. Something is off with his throw as well. Cant put a finger on it, but it seems more difficult to tech or something.

here’s something i discovered by accident. Not sure if its known.

When Honda does the butt slam, its easy to stop with close stand medium punch because sagat stands up and uppercuts him out of the air, even on cross up when timed right.

I found that you get borderline the same results if you just push crouching mp. The hitbox is weird enough that it hits honda as he is crashing down on you from above, even when he crosses up, sagat just auto corrects himself and punches honda out of the air.

[

its a decent option but focusing crumpling or focus dashpunishing is better and does more damage and slightly builds ultra bar and you recover it by the time honda gets near you or if you want ultra sometimes you can ex into ultra if the angle is right so you dont whiff

Yeah i was rusty but the main thing was i had one game to adjust to his yun then 1 round to adjust to his akuma and he plays it very strange so i couldnt approach him well due to his unorthodox style i couldnt figure out the most suitable counterplay. cos sagat against akuma has to play counter style to the akumas playstyle and akuma can be successful in many different playstyles compared to sagat . But yeah i was rusty as fuck i felt i just got a lil unlucky as well in some crucial parts of the match

nice one about the focus crumple. I knew about that but rarely used it…one thing i never used with honda though is the focus dash punish (which is odd because i use it with chun) but it never struck me to try it out with honda. Worthwhile idea…i’d imagine you would have to react pretty quickly in the case of a crossup buttslam because you could easily focus dash in the wrong direction if you arent prepared.

Ibuki kunai vortex…what do i do? I lost to an ibuki who just needed to knock me down and it was it. I luckily blocked right on a couple of occasions, but the mixup with the kunai coming from the front and back is just crazy…even with the delayed wakeup.

I dont know much about this matchup, but her dp is annoying as hell! she goes up and i try to punish but she throws a kunai at the peak of her jump…only counter i found was ex dp. If i wait for her to land, she is safe, if i wait for her to land for a punish, i get hit.

any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t know about the vortex, but focus punish the DP. If she doesn’t throw the kunai, you get a focus crumple into combo. If she does, you absorb the kunai and get a focus crumple into combo.

If you can upload the match. I want to copy the setups that Ibuki used.

Thanks for the advice maf. uploading it is going to take ages as it usually does with uploading anything from the game, but i’ll try to look into it.

On another topic…hugo matchup is supposed to be dauntingly in our favor right?

Yeah. It was a solid 8-2 before they let Hugo duck under high tiger shots. It’s 6-4 at worst for Sagat now. Hugo has answers to Sagat’s tools, but if he picks the wrong answer he gets punished and flung across the screen. st. HP is a great button in this match
