If getting safe jumped is an issue then Sagat loses to everyone. The fight vs Ryu is a joke compared to Super. Now Ryu can’t coward copter to escape corner traps or random jump tatsu to mess with your AA timing. low forward not nearly as amazing as it was.
No, im not convinced. You said you played really good ryus…be honest…do you consider yourself a good sagat? Keep it real with yourself cuz if u dont then maybe ur just mad about the match.
I think I have a good Sagat and I think people on these boards can confirm it. Why your argument of ‘If getting safe jumped is an issue then Sagat Loses to everyone’ is flawed is because you’re assuming every character is equal dangerous off a safe jump, which even you know is false.
Me being ‘mad’ about the match would me claiming it was badly in Ryu’s favour, not 5.5 to 4.5.
It’s just an opinion I have, I’m sure many will disagree and that’s okay because that is what often happens with some opinions. But when I see a top Ryu playing a top Sagat I usually see the Ryu coming out on top.
I’m also sure you’ll have some typical response smug emblemlord remark(s) and I’ll look forward to them.
^ very true I feel this way in some matches. I really dont consider myself a really good sagat. An above average one for sure. Some matches take alot of work like bision in my case. I hate that mofo but its because im not good at the matchup. got the chance to play one of the best in the nation at a tourney in casuals…bleeeeew me up. Really cant press button against that fool.
I got the chance to play 3 games against the No.1 Vega on X-box live - (according to the on screen stats that is). I managed to take a game off him, but I’d be lying if I said I knew what the hell I was up to, although I never really felt that lost. I felt comfortable Zoning, and generally just running away and making good reads with TK, and also jumping Fierce for any dive shenanigans.
I’ve never really played any decent Vega’s but I know as a Fei player, he suffers from rushdown.
If you really want to know how I feel about, I’ll give it a shot. I think you’re arguably the best contributor to the Gat forum with knowledge, but I also think that you come off as condescending sometimes when it isn’t really warranted.
I do fairly well against Vega’s, but smart Vega players can actually fair quite well against Sagat. In fact I think of the 3 other SF2 bosses Vega(claw) fights Sagat the toughest.
Know his jump arc, he has a very narrow hop, his landing is really good for TU baits. Kara’s and St.HK are the more practical ways of AA him.
Sagat’s cr.lk on Vega’s wake up destroys him, and due to Vega’s odd hit box you can get a lot more safe pressure off your knees. Block strings etc are important in this match because you want Vega to lose his claw as soon as possible. A good vega will counter poke many of your TS on their start up, and it’s important to be wary of that bud. St.lk buffered into TS is good in this fight, even if you miss the buffer you’ll kick his claw twice.
Any time vega does the ex wall dive(the one that goes through fireballs) it can ALWAYS be punished with a Kara TU or even U2, although I dont always use U2.
Keep Vega guessing on his wake up, mix up over heads, meaty cr.lk’s, instant overheads, even be prepared to dash forward after a vega back flip. When a Vega knows you’re capable of all of those it’ll have to get to them at some level.
I find that vega’s are ALWAYS crouching, that makes your knee game far more effective against him.
Ryu has a slight advantage v sagat in this match up , not really enough to make it more then 5/5 . but he definately has an easier time. when u play higher level ryus and you realise that they can pretty much just walk forward and block until they get to the range where they can reaction jump low ts , its pretty hard to zone effectively , ryu has an easier time zoning from close range. Although his cr mk getting nerfed was a help , and tiger knee seems to hit the recovery more often rather then whiffing completely from close range. I still personally enjoy this match , just get your kara uppercuts on point , make sure u anti air everything , and practice on your low ts game.
Thanks man, I notice the AA is extremely crucial in this match, one free jump in from ryu and you’re eating crazy damage with potential for more on the wake up.
One thing I’m starting to do more against ryu is dashing up cr.mk into low ts, has pretty good push back on the opponent. And what you said about ryu zoning easier close is bang on, you have to respect his 3 frame uppercut as well.
I’m not going to sit here and say sagat has terrible normals because I think his normals are actually quite good, however I do not think they are the greatest against the shoto’s, I think it’s much easier to whiff punish Sagat’s normals compared to Sagat whiff punishing the shoto normals.
But in saying all that, I really don’t believe the match up is terrible, but I feel it’s definitely one where Sagat has to be the smarter player, just my two cents.
Other news, I was watching video of Mago’s gat and he was playing a Bison(Dictator). When he had Bison in the corner and was able to forward grab him(triple knee grab) on Bison’s wake up Mago would forward dash, back dash and then jump in with a heavy kick, is this safe jump for those who know? I know Bison has terrible start up on 90% of his specials but I just wanted to know if it worked well against anyone else in the caste? Won’t be able to try until the weekend so just a bit curious.
Thanks for those Vega tips. I probably played that match the exact opposite! If Vega performs a meaty air grab (not sure of the name), can I just crouch it? In embarrassing fashion, the first round he did it to me 4 times in a row in the corner! I was experimenting with different things but kept getting grabbed. I don’t blame him for spamming as he knew he stumbled on a weak spot at that point.
Some Ryu’s just decide not to jump at all I’ve found, which is the smart play if you ask me because then you just get walked back. I actually prefer U1 in the match. I know I’m going to get that opportunity to land it with a good read because he’s always in my face.
I’d still prefer to fight Ryu than Ken or Akuma though. In my short time playing Gat, I’m undecided between those last 2 for toughest. Probably Akuma, just.
idk im just…not afraid of Ryu at all compared to what he was doing to Sagat in Super. I felt Ryu took the match then. But you know what? Maybe we all just suck cuz Japanese say Sagat wins now so idk. BTW I don’t think Sagat wins. Also bad match-ups aren’t anything to get upset or frustrated about. Shit happens.
It’s what you sign up for when you play a char. Yun for example is a much better then Sagat in this game. You think Yun players like the fact that Sagat bodies their char? I’m sure they don’t, but that’s just part of FG’s.
Also when Ryus walk at me I tend to do sum crazy shit to fuck with them like dash up sweep or grab. Or I just stand there cuz honestly they are waiting to jump a shot. Sooner or later they will jump and you get a free uppercut for nothing.
Vs Claw shrug I attack and try not to get looped. I could get much more specific but that’s what I think the match comes down too. Body his wake-up and don’t get looped.
Izuna loop yeah. The way to get out is late TU, but he can mix it up and alter his timing or just do an empty drop off the wall. Straight guess in his favor though.
Hey Sagat players. I’m trying to learn the Akuma match-up and the biggest problem I’m having is avoiding the lock-down because of air fireballs. I can’t seem to find a way around them. Blocking is an option but that lets the Akuma get in a ghetto overhead/sweep mix-up or a blockstring or a throw and I don’t want that.
Obviously EX TU is an option but sometimes I don’t have the meter, and sometimes even when I do it whiffs. I’ve also tried using forward+HK to catch him at the start of his jump but the results have been mixed.
The best success I’ve had is by rushing him down and staying at a range where it’s stupid for him to jump. Is this really the best option Sagat has or is there something I’m missing?
Hey guys,
Calgary sagat player here. While everyone is going hard for Canada Cup 2k11.
Last night our scene held a 12v12.
Jozhear was captain of the team and riceata was captain of the other team.
I unfortunately lost to street11, a very intelligent solid Gen player.
Any tips or advice to fighting a very strong gen would be great.
the air fireballs are pretty situational but if your opponents main approach is by them then if you have meter yeah you can ex tiger uppercut like you said. if you dont your gonna have to look for an air-to-air trade if you wanna avoid the mixup in some situations, jumping hp trade with air fireball is usually in sagats favor considering akumas health and how little dmg the fireballs do. youll get knocked down but usually he wont be able to set up any real mixups. jumping back hp is safest as you may not even get hit by the fb.
other options are trying to react to the angle and dashing under and punish when he hits the ground, or look for a regular TU trade.
vs akuma in general though it really depends on the player it seems. hes a shoto so people tend to play him many different ways but usually he wants to knock you down and run some vortex bullshit safejumps.mixups on him. it mostly comes down to good reads and solid spacing, not getting knocked down, and avoiding the range of hk but pressuring with tiger shots until he needs to jump.
and also I know I shouldnt be asking blatantly but Ive been searching this forum for some OSes on peoples wakeup but I cant find any. I think theres an OS ultra on rufus but I cant get it in training mode consistantly. im thinking you can maybe OS a low ts on peoples wakeup backdashes but idk how. if anyone would share any OSes or point me in the direction of where some are listed that would be very appreciative.
Take a look in the Sagat video section, I posted the Sagat v Ibuki match just a few day’s ago. Last round towards the end, Bonchan does the cr.lk/cr.hp OS for the back dash. The inputs are on the replay.
ah thanks bro. double tap lk then hp then lk. Ive been workin on that os the past few days. its pretty hard for me to link the 2 cr.lks consistantly when I try to use it with the os.
Ive also noticed that most high lvl sagats vs rufus do meaty st.lp, > cr.lk on his wakeup. Im guessing its to be safe from ex messiah. I haent seen any rufus players actually do the ex messiah tho on wakeup so im not sure if its necessarily a tight blockstring or an OS ultra or something. anyone know?
I asked justin wong about that exact thing mad. He said it was because rufus can light messiah over cr shorts. He said he didn’t think it was for ex messiah. But from what I’ve watched and using it in my game it is. I have used it in that match up alot and the ex messiah always gets blocked. Need to go to the lab to make sure though. I’m 98% sure.
