Tiers for non-fighting games?

Hell, just for shits and giggles, I’ll tier the different Star Trek captains

Top Tier (there’s no room for debate between these two)

  • Picard
  • Sisko

Mid Tier

  • Kirk - Yeah he was cheesy and was upstaged by all the other crew members, but he wasn’t bad for the time, though the original series did not age well at all.
  • Archer - Enterprise sucked, but Bakula was arguably the only non-shitty part of the show.

Low Tier

  • Pike - His actor had to have kicked himself in the ass for wanting out of this role thinking Star Trek would fail.

Shit Tier

  • motherfucking Janeway - I swear this bitch wanted to set the Voyager to self destruct every time something went wrong. I think she took out a huge insurance policy on the ship with the Ferengi.

OH you did NOT just start a tier list on Star Trek Captains! OH IT IS SO ON!!! lol.

Top Tier
Kirk
Picard

Listen, say what you want about Kirk, but he was a kid from Iowa who saved the UNIVERSE, not the Federation, not the Alpha Quadrant, not the Galaxy, THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE… and not just once…

Picard is the only Captain to actually leave our galaxy, much less go to the literal edge of the universe…

Could have been top tier… but…
Sisko

Now look, I have nothing against Sisko, he’s my wife’s favorite, she loves DS9, DS9 has the SINGLE BEST EPISODE OF ALL OF STAR TREK HISTORY (In the Pale Moonlight Season 6), but Sisko was also helped immesely by an AMAZING surrounding cast (Also the best non-main cast character in any show ever, Mr. Garak) and oh by the way, also happened to be half immortal god like being the entire time, which really killed the "Trek"ness of it for me to some degree. He spends the first season saying he isn’t the Emmisary, then he doesn’t WANT to be the emissary, then he’s ambivalent about being the Emmisary and THEN not only is he in fact the Emissary, not only in fact are the Bajoran Prophecies almost completely Gospel Truth, but he is in FACT half god like being… At that point, he just had too much help obtain the level of epicness by himself.

Mid Tier
Janeway - Now before the flame starts. She is a Captain who probably GREW more throught her run than anyone else (with the exception of Sisko finding out he’s part wormhole alien). She had to lead a pretty rag tag crew 75000 light years back to earth. Balanced the needs of security and diplomacy when she had zero backup, and Kate Mulgrew is a pretty darn good actress. Was there too much technobabble? Maybe. Did the WRITING get a little cheesy and dramatic? Probably at times, but Captain Janeway to me was the star of that show and watching her lead kept me coming back and makes Voyager a personal favorite because looking back… she didn’t have much to work with, but the DR. was pretty epic.

Archer - I actually liked the characters on Enterprise ALOT. I think it dealt with some pretty headdy issues (racial integration, drug addiction, the need to balance the desire to explore versus your ability to do so) but Enterprises created so many cannonical problems its hard to buy. But is that Archer’s fault? No. Scott Bakula did an admirable job, but there’s no stand out moment (except for at the very end when he gives the speech to what will become the United Federation of Planets) where you said “Yeah, he’s a real Star Trek Captain”. Although watching the Xindi blowup Florida was pretty cool.

Low tier
Poor Pike. He just never had a chance…

True Crap Tier
John Harriman - Don’t know who he is? He was the Captain of the Enterprise B in the movie Star Trek Generations… the guy who let Kirk basically make all the decisions because he didn’t know what the HELL he was doing… how Starfleet ever promoted him to Captain, much less to command the Federation Flagship is single handedly the worst decision by Starfleet EVER.

Anyone got tiers for Valkeryie Profile: Covenant of the Plume and Valkeryie Profile 2: Silmeria?

I posted tiers for VP2 in this thread a few years ago. Here it is again:

I really hope tri-Ace is working on VP3.

What makes Silmeria so bad?

It’s been a while, but from what I remember of Silmeria, she doesn’t stand out in any way. All of her moves are recycled from the einherjar archers. There’s no reason to use her over Rufus by the time you get her.

I have to agree with you. I watched the entire series recently and I completely understand why people think it was so weak as a whole, but I think it was the writers’ fault and not Janeway’s. Janeway was an excellent character put into difficult moral dilemmas constantly, I thought she was quite good. I do think she was upstaged by the doctor and 7 of 9 though. And Tuvok is the shittiest actor ever.

I’m sure I missed the train a long time ago, but I recently bought Dragon Age Origins and I was wondering if someone could give me a tier list for builds/allies? Mages look stupid strong and that’s all I know.

As a “casual” Star Trek watcher, what was it about Enterprise that so many people didn’t like? I’ve watched a fair number of TNG and Voyager, so I know from the few bits of Enterprise that I watched it was quite different…but did people just dislike it for being different? Or were there other reasons?

For the player character, the best way to go is the combat mage route (Arcane Mage class?). Once you get the passive battle-mage skills running (mana shield or w/e they are actually called in DA:O) and some decent armour, you can blow through most of the combat. You can actually pretty easily solo the game as a combat mage.

As for the party members…it’s been a while since I played, so my recollection may be a bit spotty, but from what I remember:

Top tier:
The Healer - can’t remember her name, but she was basically always useful to have around, and mages are gdlk in DAO

Good tier:
Morrigan - another mage; she would be in top tier if it weren’t for shapeshifting being completely useless

Mid tier:
Alistair - I seem to remember him being better than the other physical classes - I think he was just really good at tanking
Leliana
Shale
Zevran
The Bad Guy You Can Recruit - I think he was good, but he isn’t really tierable since you get him so late in the game, if at all

Low tier:
the dwarf - physical classes just get overshadowed by the other classes

Bottom tier:
Dog - decent early game, but his stat/skill growth ends up being just strictly worse than the other characters late game
Sten - I seem to remember that not only was he bad stat-wise overall, but he also just got less skill/specialization points throughout the game - he could only take one specialization class or something? Sorry, I just can’t remember exactly what it was.

DA:O
Here’s all you need to know.

You = Arcane Warrior = Game Over. Too Easy

Your companions… Take three mages… That’s it. You, Wynne, Morrigan + Alistar to tank and use Templar skills on enemy mages… Game, Set, Match… and when you’re making your Arcane Warrior be sure to know which spells you can cast with your sword out, otherwise you’ll put it away, cast your spell then take it back out, but that’s not a huge thing I suppose.

And the reason why Enterprise is so debated is because it screws up so much Canonical Star Trek History. There’s so much time travelling and so many things happen that actively repudiate things we already knew (or thought we knew) that it makes so much of what happens hard to swallow. But the show itself wasn’t terrible. And really Season 5 had the potential to be AWESOME but the problem was that over half of all enterprise viewers DVRed it and back then the ratings people had no good way to measure shows being DVRed so it looked like Enterprise had half the viewership it actually did.

Puzzle Quest 2 class tiers (DS version)

Top Tier

  • Sorcerer - This is the most broken class in the game. This is the most durable class due to having Ice Shield, which applies damage to one’s blue mana instead of HP and Mirror Shield to drain the opponents defense. This is great because blue mana is increased by Intelligence, which is the most important stat in the game since there are a lot of minigames. Aside from poisons, this class can bypass defense the most easily and has mana options for huge burst defense. With a good mana intake boosting accessory, mana tonic, and its mana drain abilities, the Sorceror will never run out of mana, barring an unlucky board reset.

  • Assassin - Not only does this class have the best healing spell in the game, but it also has the most options to control the opponent. Its Stealth spell is the best move in the game because its a mana shield, but it also doubles its Strike spell damage, which can be quadrupled if combined with Blackjack. The Assassin has the highest sustained damage with its very low-cost Strike line of spells and class-exclusive poisons, which totally ignore defense. The best part of this class is that it relies heavily on yellow mana, which is based on the Agility stat, the most important stat for Assassins, so you have a lot of wiggle room with accessories since Strength and Stamina aren’t too important.

Mid Tier

  • Barbarian - This class has piss survivability, but great burst damage. Apart from the incidental Intelligence required for minigames (you can safely max it at 10), it relies almost solely on red mana, which is its Strength stat. The Barbarian will have the highest burst damage with a good Hellforged 2-handed weapon since Barbarian exclusive weapons have the highest base damage of any attack in the game and Barbarians have very high weapon crit. This class also has the most affordable board manipulation of all the classes, so this is probably the most versatile class in the game, allowing lots of variety and counterpicking based on opponent.

Low Tier

  • Templar - This class’s gimmick is supposed to be survivability, but both the Sorcerer and Assassin have better survivability due to having a mana shield spell. This is the most gear dependent class in the game, because they need a full set of Draconic or Runic armor to help mitigate damage and a Daemonic weapon since they’re totally dependent on having a high damage weapon for offense. This class requires 4 spells to be viable, so they have the fewest means to counterpick spells. They also depend on all 5 colors of mana, which is problematic if you don’t have a high defense to spam Divine Power.

I’ve been playing Demon’s Souls a lot. Most of the game isn’t too difficult (you eventually get used to the levels, and forging a Demon’s Soul weapon like the Meat Cleaver or Blueblood Sword can really help you out), but wow, I cannot beat 1-4.

Anyways, here’s what I think are the tiers for the starting classes. Note that any class can be shaped into whatever you want, but some classes have an easier time in the beginning (when you’re stuck with what you’ve got) than others.

Yakuza 4 character tiers
I also listed the equipment that I believe is most beneficial for them.

A+Tier: Kiryu

*Recommended equipment for Kiryu: Anything (sword optional)
Kiryu is an all-around solid character. High damage output, good attacks, Heat actions for almost every situation, and benefits from damage increases from Red Heat mode. Since bosses take reduced damage from repetitive Heat actions, he should carry a sword just because he has specialized techniques for it. Technically, he doesn’t need it - he’s just that good.

A Tier: Akiyama

*Recommended equipment for Akiyama: Kokurenkai set or regular armors
Akiyama is a combo machine. He gains Heat gauge ridiculously fast so you can score a Heat action pretty much after a Square x13, Triangle x3 combo. Akiyama has really versatile Heat actions such as OTG, weapon moves, wall moves, and the one where you can target multiple enemies while running. The Kokurenkai equipment set (occasionally prevents damage inflicted on you) is recommended because his combos take too long and can leave him vulnerable on whiff.

A- Tier: Saejima and Tanimura (in no particular order)

*Recommended equipment for Saejima: Rage set
Saejima is the powerhouse of the group, and his benefits from being so is that he gains hyper armor during his charge moves such as Square x3, Triangle (charge), Triangle, Triangle. This hyper armor status gives you that advantage when fighting multiple or large enemies. However, he is only armored when he has Heat mode, so the Rage equipment set compliments it. The Rage equipment set gives a damage bonus to you when you are in Heat mode, so this helps a bunch. I would say that Saejima’s biggest flaw is that he shouldn’t use his Heat actions and that his combos are slow to start, but that is what having the highest HP and hyper armor is for.

*Recommended equipment for Tanimura: Sacred Tree set
Tanimura is probably the most frustrating character to play as, but I wouldn’t consider him to be a “bad” character because of it. As a defensive character, he is blessed with the ability to parry. After completing Nair’s training and level ups, your parry window becomes ridiculously lengthy, and you gain a healthy amount of Heat gauge from it. I would say that aside from the parry, Tanimura benefits from having a different Heat action after each of his combo finisher (after a Triangle following any amount of Square inputs in a combo), so he can continue doing solid damage against bosses and enemies. By fishing for parries and following with Heat actions, he does a damn good job of winning, though it might take a bit longer than for other characters. The Sacred Tree set is recommended for Tanimura because he should be fishing for parries all the time and you can’t afford to take damage from guns. Conveniently, his last boss fight and his post-game boss fight are much easier with the Sacred Tree equipment set and its ability to prevent gun damage (while building Heat gauge).

Overall, I would say that the game is pretty balanced, and I don’t think the rankings of each character is that far apart.

Radiant Historia tiers

S
Aht: At first, I thought she was a really weak fighter, but then I realized that her traps do crazy amounts of damage. Seriously, boss battles can end in mere minutes with her laying traps everywhere, combined with a character who has no problems knocking enemies around the field. Traps also add a lot of hits to the combo counter. In addition to having powerful magic, Aht is a strong healer. Her Lv. 2 Mana Burst is great because it will max out another character’s Mana Burst gauge. Aht is the fastest character in the game, which allows her to get multiple turns.

A
Stocke: main characters usually are high in tier lists, because they’re usually the all-around type. Stocke in particular has to be an all-around fighter since he can’t be taken out of your party. Fortunately, he’s good on most fronts, whether it’s physical or magical attacks. He can offer some healing when you’re in a pinch. He has no problems moving enemies around the field, except he has no way to bring them to the front. His Lv. 3 Mana Burst is very powerful; it targets a single enemy, but that makes it ideal against bosses. Besides, if you can get all the enemies onto one space, they all take damage…this is handy, although it will take some turns getting all the enemies into position.

Gafka: He’s a purely physical attacker with few support options, but that’s all he needs to be effective. Several of his abilities affect multiple targets and simultaneously re-position the enemy. I found myself using Qigong Wave a lot, because it does a ton of damage. The only problem is that it only targets the middle row. Both of Gafka’s Mana Bursts are powerful; using his Lv. 3 on the final boss is a bit silly though. The only issues with Gafka are his speed and his low MDF.

B
Marco: Marco has some great support magic, and he also has options for positioning enemies on the grid. He has healing magic, but he gets the stronger skills later than other characters, which hurts him a bit. Also, he isn’t particularly powerful, and all of his attack skills are single-target only. His Mana Bursts do not deal damage, but instead they buff the party.

Raynie: Raynie is a spear user, but she has a variety of elemental magic. The problem is, you have to decide whether you want Raynie to be a physical attacker or a magic-user because she can’t do both of them at the same time effectively. I found her Mana Bursts to be worthless, but that’s probably because she didn’t have a high MAG stat when I used her (she was a physical fighter for me). Definitely use her if you like inflicting poison.

Rosch: Rosch is the tank in this game. He has very high HP and DEF at early levels, which means he will hardly die. Several of his attacks can debuff the enemy, though I find that debuff skills in general aren’t as good as they could be. Being a tank, Rosch is the slowest fighter in the game, and usually has to take his turn after both your other characters and the enemy have taken their turns. I prefer his Lv 2. MB over his Lv. 3 simply because of three things: 1) it knocks the enemy into the air, allowing others to slam them to the ground; 2) it targets multiple enemies; 3) If successful, it debuffs their DEF.

C
Eruca: Eruca’s actually quite strong with her magic skills. She has the best resurrection magic in the game, but not much else in the way of healing magic. A major problem with Eruca is her dependency on MP do deal damage, since her physical power leaves a lot to be desired. Even when the enemy has low HP, you still want to use her Mana Shot to make sure the enemy actually dies. Why are guns in RPGs always so weak compared to swords? The upside to her magic attacks is that they’re non-elemental, making them usuable in any situation.

100% scientifically accurate…

Doesn’t Royalty get Soul Arrow at the beginning? I started as a Knight because I heard that he’s the best choice for beginners, also heard the Thief is major death fodder.

On nightmare this would be idea. The most balanced party is two mages, a rogue, and a tank. But AW’s are tanks amongst themselves especially with shimmering shield, so you don’t really need a PURE tank when it comes to Alistair or Shale. You can run 3 mages and a rogue, so you unlock chest and extra experience.

Yeah, Royalty is the one that gets Soul Arrow and the MP regen ring at the start. Makes the game a lot easier than usual.

Needs Huang Lee in High.Carl is mid at best.
