You do fight either a Priest or a Mediator in Chapter 4 who has math skill as a secondary…he’s not really difficult, though.
A FFT: Remix would be outstanding, with more balanced gameplay and all that good stuff.
Yeah I don’t use any special characters other than Ramza and sometimes Agrias, depends on my mood. I like just using the generics, it makes the game more fun for me. I do love Agrias though so I gotta pick her up every once in a while lol
There’s an all-Calculator rare battle on one map, but I think they’re still random generics (I forget if rare maps have randomized or set-in-stone generics) and if it is, it’s staggeringly likely only one or two of them even know any magic worth using since, like most random battle generics, few things about them besides their main class and amount of JP available are set in stone.
I don’t think you can find an enemy Bard, Dancer, or Mime, and as such it’s VERY unlikely to see Dance or Sing on a random generic’s skill set (since the JP to open these jobs is staggering and has to be spread out over several different jobs) but I think at least one story battle involves an enemy that knows Dance skills.
SSS Tier (Anyone that played this game knows that Bleu is a gamebreaker, like Peter is in Shining Force 2)
Bleu
SS Tier (Almost as good as Bleu)
Domingo
Lyle
Zylo
Torasu
S Tier (These characters would be SS, but they all have a flaw that keeps them out)
Hero (his defense is low, so he needs too much coddling to be SS tier)
Guntz
Musashi
Hanzou
Arthur (shitty Knight, but a great Paladin, train him)
Kokichi
A Tier (Good characters that don’t have broken shit like the S-SSS tiers do)
Adam (he’s good, but you get him so late and underleveled that its not worth the effort to train him)
Khris
Alef (Alef is the most versatile caster that doesn’t move in on Domingo’s turf, but Alef comes in pretty damn late into the game)
Gong
Amon
B Tier (Usable characters that are outclassed by the end of the game)
Everyone else
C Tier (All these guys are horrible upon promotion or just have flat out shitty stats)
Pelle
Earnest
Hans
Lowe
Ken
D Tier (…)
Fucking Jogurt
Of course, these tiers are made with the assumption that you won’t use the reload trick to prevent getting shafted upon level up.
I’m interested to see the reasons for Gong and Amon being A-tier. I’ve heard that Amon can be good but he never worked for me. Besides, you get Kokichi who can not only do what Amon does, but can also use a spear. Kokichi’s only downfall is his shitty HP.
I think Anri, Diane, and possibly Gort should be added to A-tier. Diane usually has good growth no matter what. Anri’s has Freeze (Blaze sucks serious shit in this game after like Chapter 2) and her Strength is insane for a mage. With a Power Stick she can actually outclass most of your warriors in physical damage dealing in the mid-game.
Gort can be lacking in HP at times, but overall his growths are usually better than Luke.
Gong is A Tier only if he’s promoted at Lv. 20. His stat growth seems to start shooting up at Lv. 15 unpromoted. He has a decent selection of healing spells and can fight pretty well if you promote him at 20. He sucks if you promote him too early or let him lag in levels. Amon is outclassed immensely by Kokichi like you said, but her stat growth is phenomenal besides her defense upon promotion. She and Balbaroy can equip the “Hero swords” for some reason. She’s good, but with Kokichi, Domingo, and Bleu, you don’t really need her, but she’s still a good character.
I’ve been shafted by RNG randomly with Diane, but she is good if luck is on your side. Gort suffers the same way that Pelle does. Gort is excellent pre-promoted, but has spotty stat growth upon promotion, though not to the extent of Pelle’s ineptitude. As far as Anri, she has very good physical stats for a mage, but that becomes moot in the late game when most enemies can 2-shot her and her physical attacks become too risky. The only people that the AI focus on besides mages are your healers. Another ding against Anri is that her only good element is Ice, which is Domingo’s forte, and Domingo is not only a flyer, but he’s got MUCH better defense. There’s no reason to use Anri over Domingo.
I guess Diane is an A Tier caliber character, but the B Tier is where Gort and Anri belong.
Domingo may outclass Anri, but Freeze 4 (plus more MP to use it, plus getting it earlier) still puts her at A tier. Blue Dragons are really the only concern with doubling up on ice, and frankly, who cares? Bolt 2 is also fun if you want to finish off groups of weakened enemies.
Vankar is the worst paladin period. Pelle beats him at a Level 10 OR 20 promotion. Arthur requires a Level 20 promotion to be awesome. He’s either C tier (Level 10 promotion) or S tier (with a level 20 promotion). Ken is the same way. C or A, depending on promotion.
Hans is better than Diane IF you promote at 20. He’s got the third best critical rate in the game (behind Gong and Musashi), and his stat growth is higher in everything compared to Diane. However, he’s a late bloomer, which is why he requires a Level 20 promotion to be good.
I’m tempted to put Musashi up, but too bad he joins so late.
Khris is S tier. Gets defense quickly at promotion and has Aura. Most reliable healer in the game. Quick is there if you need it. Torasu gets Aura 4, but that’s a lot of effort to put into him to get that; Khris is there since Chapter 1 healing your dudes.
Adam needs to drop. Great stats, but any non-promoted unit who joins after the Dragonia battle becomes too much of a hassle to train. Plus, he’s melee with 4 movement. Crap.
Hanzou needs to drop. He’s not really much stronger than everyone else and he joins in the last chapter.
I agree with some of your points, but tiers are only useful and meaningful if they assume optimal play conditions, random elements (such as the level up RNG) aside. For that reason, I did not include the fact that some characters joined way late into the game into my tiers and I also assumed Lv. 20 promotions. For example, Gong is vicious if you promote him at 20, but total garbage if he’s promoted at 10. I also cannot justify tiering based on when they join because any character can be caught up to speed at some point by Egressing as often as need be. It may be tedious and boring, but you won’t see any character’s full potential without Egress spamming.
I understand the hate on that many people (me included) have for Adam. He joins basically at the end of the game as a Lv. 10 unpromoted unit. I actually leveled him up, including a Lv. 20 promotion, and he’s actually a good unit stat-wise if one can be bothered to train him. I agree with you that he’s not worth the effort due to how late he joins, but mainly because Guntz and Musashi are both better units that are much more deserving of your finite Mobility Ring and Turbo Peppers. Tiers should be based on stats alone due to the Egress spell
And though this might lead to an off topic discussion slightly, where would one go to find out how to use this tier list in building decks and whatnot? With the Yugioh XBLA game coming in the near future, I find myself in need of some good beginner resources for learning the game, for someone who has never played. Any help is extremely appreciated.
I personally don’t like the “full potential” alone approach to tiers, though in a game like Shining Force where Egress is available, that approach does work. However, Adam is the only character who truly is an absolute pain in the ass to train, which is why I suggest that he drop a tier. Torasu and Alef have magic which makes them tolerable, Lyle and Bleu can be trained at Dragonia (the last good place for training low level units), and everyone else can train at the Balbazak battle.
If you want to go statwise:
Hans > Diane. Loses out on two agility, but has +3 Attack, +2 Defense, +5 HP, and +5 Critical rate.
Ken > every knight not named Arthur. He’s like a less extreme Arthur.
Stats at Level 20/20 (estimated), in ATT/DEF/AGI/HP/MP/Crit format:
Ken 38/54/56/68/ 0/8
Mae 35/52/62/72/ 0/7
Arthur 41/60/68/78/30/10
Pelle 33/56/65/65/ 0/6
Vankar 32/51/60/70/ 0/5
Earnest 36/49/64/66/ 0/5
Something like, Arthur >> Ken > Mae > Pelle > Earnest > Vankar
Being able to kill people sure is nice. Not that Kurt would know, considering that his hit-for-hit damage is so fucking weak that he takes forever and a day to kill anything that wouldn’t die in one hit anyway. He also has less range than anyone else in the game and teleporting is just worthless outside of combos. That’s just it. Wolverine doesn’t even need combos. He takes two seconds to kill pretty much anything. Only Beast kills shit faster than him.
She has a grand total of one attack that’s worth using. It’s a really good attack, to be sure, and she moves quickly and jumps high, but Wolverine moves quickly, jumps high, and has to work really hard to find moves that don’t cause mass destruction. Also, Psylocke’s one good attack(her jump+attack, aka flippy slashy thing, aka Screw Attack) isn’t even as good as other attacks that are somewhat similar, like Beast’s jump+special, which is also a Screw Attack with full-circle hitbox, but it does stupid damage.
Kurt just moves like a monster. Niggas can’t lay hands on him. Does Wolverine kill shit better? Yes, but Kurt keeps it moving and that’s why I would give him the nod.
How important in combat in X-Men 2? If you can just run part most of it, I’d probably give the stronger platformer character the edge, especially if Nightcrawler’s teleporting powers can skip parts of levels or save him from what other characters would consider ‘certain death via platforming mistakes.’ Mario and Toad handle conflict better in SMB2, but Luigi and Peach get to skip entire chunks of levels and have an easier time avoiding fights when in any level not involving shoveling entire pyramids full of sand, and Peach in particular can float to save herself frequently from badly-planned jumps. Since the platforming parts of the game tend to be considered the harder parts, so they tend to be regarded as the superior characters.
Also see: Grant and Alucard in CV3, Tails in most of the older Sonic games, Luigi again in SM64 DS, why Charged Chameleon Sting is so OP in MMX.
Unlike X-Men 1, X2 divides up the platforming and boss fights mostly into separate stages, making it easy to switch out Nightcrawler when you’re about to go up against the bosses which he is useless against (which is most). Beast beasts most boss fights but is fairly bad for most platforming, so he’s like the anti-Crawler.
All the talk about Hans > Diane makes me :bluu:
Hans can eat a dick, seriously. I’ll take the cute pink-haired elf girl who doesn’t need to be babysat in order to be a decent ranged attacker.
For what it’s worth, Hans is near useless without a Level 20 promotion (probably the worst character for a Lv10 promotion game), since all his growths are late and all of Diane’s are linear.
