Thoughts on EVO Tournament Format

Run or join the 1v1 SFxT Side Tourney at EVO

Get someone to record, charge an entry fee. The only you’ll be missing is the clowns who don’t care to play unless there’s money or fame or attention involved and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

If you like the game, rep it and play the fuck out of it.

I hate this game but I hate people picking and choosing what game to play based upon the exposure it’ll generate or money involved so very much more.

Who cares what pr balrog thinks? he lost years worth of brain cells from playing marvel and now his idea of hype is watching someone convert a mashed crouching jab into a 100% wombo combo

Anyway most drama will happen off stream since most players attempt to keep their cool while playing. In fact all you’ll probably see on stream is 4 guys cramped together all trying to get a decent angle on the T.V.

I’ve noticed a lot of stuff like this. Quite frankly, if you ask me, they should either suck it up and let the game be played as intended, or take it out and replace it with another game. I still find it both hilarious and sickening that they KNEW shit like this would happen and they still put it in EVO, when Skullgirls was practically tailor made for tourney play and the best it’s gonna get is a side tourney.

While I think that 2v2 is going to be hype as fuck and fun as hell to watch I still like good old fashioned 1 on 1 matches to simply see who the best player is. I guess it would just take too much time to run both.

agree. the 1 v1 straight up sucks right now. to the point where i took my copy back

i did have a lot of fun when i played 2v2 tho, and i’d go get the game back if i was sure it was going to stay 2v2 tourney standard

i also dont buy all this BS about people just dont understand how to play it. its 75% of the sf4 engine. all that will happen is people will optimize damage and the game will still end in time outs

2 characters+red health+sf4 scaling+ the natural pacing of a SF style match= time outs

This is the worst decision they could have made, and it is effectively killing the game for a. Xbox owners and b. anyone who is rational. 2v2 proves nothing, period. This is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS we are talking, not some silly side tourney at a local. Why should I have to play 2v2 and deal with another person’s mistakes hindering me? I hate this so much and I suggest you be very vocal about how dumb you think it is.

There’s so much damage potential in this that it’s pretty disgusting. All the characters have 300-500 damage off stuff that’s insanely easy to do and can be done off bounces, hit confirms, etc. Work a little harder and you can get even higher damage. it won’t eliminate timeout wins but it’ll be a lot less frequent once folks start doing big damage rather than pecking each other with switch cancel combos.

Am I the only person that thinks this game in it’s current form shouldn’t be an EVO game whatsoever? I think this decision shows that the EVO tournament organizers feel the same way.

We have dumb glitches, infinites, timeouts being a huge issue, no idea WTF to do with gems or if they’ll even all be free (and quite frankly I’m in favor of banning gems outright unless Capcom makes all of them free to everyone. They clearly originally intended to charge for at least a portion of them, why else would they be locked on the disc if they were supposed to be free?), no idea if the tournament patch or any future patch will fix any of these issues within the next 4 months, and half the game is still “locked” and won’t be made available until after Evo. I would have been fine either way with 1v1 or 2v2 at Evo, but chances are the game will be in a much improved state within a year.

Besides, isn’t Capcom throwing their own national SFxT tournament? That might have also factored into the decision, and if that’s 1v1 then I think it’s no big loss.

my point was more that its not going to get much higher. the damage scaling will keep a cap on it. you might get more hits or whatever, but at some point players will figure out what earns the most meter or does the most damage for a situation, and then thats it. i dont think this is ever going to turn into 1 combo death, or 700 damage all around

Of course the scaling is going to keep a cap on it but I think the they’ve (Capcom) tuned it pretty well at the moment and once folks figure that out, it’ll be a much faster game. A lot of the combos at NCR had two switches and did maybe 30-35% damage (on the better ones anyway) but for a lot of characters, 2 bars is pretty much 50%. I play Kuma and Law and if I land one of my jabs or pokes, it’s 500 damage if I’ve got 2 bars, 300-350 without meter, and more if I land a jump-in. The max is 1150 life so even then, that’s close to half life there.

Glitches will always be in a game at launch and infinites can happen to (MvC3 had a bunch and some are still there). Looking at the dlc on Capcom Unity, it seems that gems will be free but even if they aren’t, we could just ban DLC gems. The extra characters shouldn’t be a problem since it’s not like anyone is missing out right now.
BUT!
I think in the current format that they have, they should replace it with Blazblue or Skullgirls. This current format sickens me and I only get more pissed off the more I think about it.

i recommend evo to also consider stick-passing 3v3 kof and 3v3 umvc3 (you have to call your own assist/input your own dhc’s/etc)

That sounds hype hype dude! :D!#!#!#!#!#!#13

This is basically the Evo staff trying to asssinate the game. It’s no wonder this game isn’t liked. It actually promotes smart gameplay instead of rewarding hero deep decision making. It’s the same hate CVS2 always had at Evo. I would definitely encourage everyone who play this game to enter the 1 v 1 side tourney and show Evo that this game has players. I mean they tried to kill Alpha 3 and CVS2 for years while trying to find some way to keep mvc2 on the roster.

Just because a game is slower paces and players need to think don’t make it bad. As a matter of fact that makes the game far more refreshing.

I’ll do 2v2 at Evo to support this game. I would hate to see a bunch if whiny scrub srkers basically kill a good game. Who give a fuck about hype when you have a game that’s very smart at higher levels and will continue to be. This very complaining forced Capcom to turn SFIV which was solid into dive kick/burkick fighter. Fuck that, I’m tired of a vocal minorities killing smart games.

3v3 marvel where you call your own assist would be badass.

Lost interest in 2v2 with the failure to include 2 players 1 console on 360 or PC. If you have a PS3 then you dont have much of an excuse to do badly in this. 360 players wont get the advantage of greater match up experience online with a partner. Playing with a partner online and playing online in the same room is completely different. Its not the biggest bias ever but its still enough for people to sit there and say “well we couldnt train in the same room together” and its just going to have a negative impact on the attitude towards the whole thing. Glory doesnt feel as good when you know the opponent is at a disadvantage and fans are never as interested either.

As things stand, with the game in the state it is, I am 100% behind 1v1.

Why can’t you train in the same room together? My friend and I hook up monitors right next to one another and play online on the same team with different XBL accounts.

The game is still a baby no need to choke that shit out in it’s crib.

2v2 is fun but not the way to measure who is really the best.

Because that’s not an option for a lot of people. I know some people who only get practice when they’re at someone else’s house, due to the not owning a console, or simply not having enough money for the game. 2v2 only introduces problems that I’m very sure EVO is not in the right mindset to tackle.

While I think that the 2v2 format is actually extremely entertaining to watch (and compete in) and I understand why they would want to do that at EVO, think that by announcing right now that it will be only the 2v2 format with no gems at EVO that it is a death-knell for SFxT right now in the present.

If players are not going to be able to compete 1v1 at the biggest tournament then many will simply forget about the game alltogether. The gem issue is neither here nor there (even with the tournament patch it may not be fast enough for selection) but the strict 2v2 only format might just pull the plug too soon and for the wrong reasons.
