Thoughts on EVO Tournament Format

2v1 would be fair to people like me who come from…sorry, I mean people like me who “should have practiced making friends”

Judging from the late date of this announcement it seems they have thought this through though. Sponsor influence also most likely has something to do with the 2v2 tournament, more interesting to watch, or they just want to market it more as a multiplayer game I dunno

gems aren’t banned because people dont like them, gems are banned because of the sheer amount of time required to set them up. even if you know exactly what gems you want and have the most efficent way to select them, you’re still looking at 2-3 minutes at least per match to set up gems. in a tournament the size of evo, this equates to litterally days worth of extra time just for setting them up

compound this to the unreal number of timeouts this game has, and even small, local tournaments are looking at additional HOURS added to it, simply for gems

in short: they are not banned because of their gameplay altering properties, but just the time spent setting them up

sry but i think you are thinking of scramble mode. 2vs2 is gonna be pair play

But to ban them even before the tournament patch? (which will speed it up)

If it takes to long then start enforcing time limits. Some places have already started doing this cause people start goofing off during button checks. It would suck to be disqualified but the community is already way to lax in general when it comes to showing up on time.

This just screams: “We don’t like it, so we don’t want to deal with it.”

Do this shit Double Dragon style. winning team has to play each other for the love of the girl, hopefully Kayo. It’d be an excellent twist at the “wrestlemania” of WWEsports

tournament mode isn’t going to speed it up…like at all fyi

its quite literally(trust me on this) because it takes way, way too much time

… If i wanted to play a game where i relied on anybody but myself i would go play cod

I am incredibly disappointed in 2v2 over 1v1 format. I do not enter team tournaments as a serious event (because I don’t want a partners decisions to make or break a game for me). I have no opinion on gems being banned one way or the other. I did think of this though: Evo ruleset pretty much determines most tournament rulesets in the U.S., does this now mean tournament standard is 2v2 / No gems? That would be enough for me to drop the game all together.

On a more upbeat note, I hope it is fun for everyone that decides to enter though! Should be an interesting top 8 to watch as well.

No gems? AWESOME

2v2? TERRIBLE.

Seriously, I live in Brazil and I was really hoping to go to EVO this year, but this ruleset is almost making me give up.
This will screw up a lot of people that comes from others countries.
Time to quit SF x TK and keep trainning on UMvC3 and SFIV I guess.

Just to clarify. Single entrants are not allowed at all?

I wouldn’t mind 2v1 being ok.
What happens if your partner does not show? You get DQ’ed? That would suck.

Cmon guys…if single entrants would allowed you all know it would just be a 1v1 tournament again because near nobody would enter as a pair.

*face palm

But as it is, they’ve just locked out anyone that doesn’t have a partner that can play regularly with them. That kills the game for a lot of people, especially folks from foreign countries that want to fly in for the game.

CEO’s SFxT rules

TL: DR- 1v1, No Gems. 2v2 side tourny.

I’m sure you there will be hundreds of people at evo looking for a partner. And besides can’t you find one online to train with you online?

Wonder why that is…

Because this game is a lot easier 1v1 than 2v2.

I’d straight out say “better” but let’s not get into that.

Btw i heard infiltration thinks hakan is a tier, too bad he didn’t use him at ncr lol

There is that possibility but that isn’t feasible for most folks. What happens if you go and can’t find a partner because everyone ended up being paired? Then there’s the fact that the two of you wouldn’t have had much time to practice playing with each other and get to know each other’s styles. That already puts you at a disadvantage against teams that have had the time to practice and work with each other. You could run into folks that don’t want to pair with you or you make a bad team and there’s nothing you can do about it as the tournament would have already started or sign-ups are over.

I play Gundam EXVS as one of my primary games, I know the exact issues with using 2v2 as a tournament format. I can understand it in a game that actually does 2v2 but in a Tag game like this, forcing 2v2 on everyone when 1v1 is viable is pretty awful.

I don’t like 2v2 replacing 1v1. 2v2 is fun, don’t get me wrong, and to see two character specialists duke it out together is cool, but I am of the opinion that the coop between two players will never measure up to what one mind could be able to do with two characters, when it comes to synergy. I feel that we won’t see the game being played at it’s highest level with only 2v2. Some people might find 2v2 more fun than 1v1, and I can understand that, but I think the quality could be better for 1v1.

Also, I don’t like that EVO has announced gem ban, before the tournament patch is even released. It should be given a chance before making a decision like that.
