Thoughts on EVO Tournament Format

So would you rather have 1v1 with 1 match? That’s all Evo would have time for. Does that prove who the best player is?

ANd honestly I think that 2v2 brings another layer to the skill requirements of a championship player. There’s another variable you have to accommodate for – and not in a “I’ll tag myself in and do the longest possible combo” way. And I’m sorry, but FPS and LoL games DO tend to clearly point out which players amongst teams are strongest and for what reasons. Coordinating strategies, timing, combos, keeping a watchful eye on the other team’s tactics and analyzing your own partners moves and actions to identify moments when you should tag yourself in and when they’ve got things under control is an element of analysis and thought we’ve yet to challenge in competitive fighting game players and I don’t see a problem in a new game giving us the opportunity to say “Hey, this is something that we haven’t tested you on, let’s do it.”

It’s way, WAY easier to just fly solo and grind out combos and solo tactics, coordinating only yourself against a single opponent. It takes a lot more skill and dedication to cooperate with another player and act as a unit. Champion players are capable of that and will know not to just ballhog and try to solo it out like assholes.

I’m personally excited to see a bit of evolution and companionship blooming in the FGC as an integral component of a match as opposed this “one guy versus one guy” pass the stick stuff. I get that its different and not what people wanted/expected – but frankly, its time to either nut up or shut up. Like it or not, changes happen and they aren’t always going to be ones you like.

You might want to start brushing up on your social skills, because this is happening. Sorry to disappoint.

lol why wouldn’t they have time for it?

you all act like you are physic

how much time do evo had allocated for this game?

stop making stuff up

The advantages of 2v2:

  • Standard of play is much higher than that of 1v1, because players get to concentrate on playing their best character rather than having 1 character being better than the other
  • Lame play is strongly discouraged, because there will be pressure on you not to hog all the play time without giving time to your partner
  • Excessive character switching to abuse health gain like Inflitration did in NCR is discouraged, as each switch attempt requires coordination
  • 2 players will lead to 2 different play styles which makes seeing their chemistry in action interesting
  • Double the salt when you lose because of your partner

People don’t think it be like it is, but it do.

At high level, theres no way a 2v2 game will play out the same as 1v1.

Throughout the course of the game, you try to condition your opponent to do certain things as you try to get a read on their habits and patterns. The moment they tag, a different person with different habits and tendencies, and has not been conditioned to your play has come in - going even deeper, the second person tagged in may have been calmly watching your play to pick up on your habits and tendencies.

At this point, do you start the same gameplan over, or do you try to change your tactics, knowing they were watching you play their partner? Or do you tag in your own partner to keep things “fresh”?

Offensively, you can condition your opponent(s) to react certain ways, then have your partner exploit the pattern you’ve set before tagging them in.

The metagame has a lot of potential, and I for one, think it deserves to be explored.

I’m pretty sure SFxT is going to be ONE of the largest games at EVO, up there with Marvel, as its going to attract a good number of SSF4 players. Evo 2011 had 5 games. Evo 2012 has 6. Its an extra game that basically doubles the SSF4 time allotment (SSF4 probably being the slowest game at EVO, mind you.)

It’s a concern. That aside, since SFxT is a healthy mix of Marvel and SSF4, its probably going to attract a sizable crowd, as there very well may be overlap across all 3 games.

Considering that EVO is consistently getting bigger – I don’t think its a bad idea for them to think of ways to preemptively reduce the load on the schedule.

EDIT:

I swear, the FGC makes me feel like such a square. I’m always defending some random ass business decision like I made it myself. Someone needs to hire me for PR or something… I don’t care how good or bad of a job I do. >_> I deserve SOMETHING for being on the “bad guy’s” side all the time. Maybe an evil robe? A red lightsaber?

I’m just concerned that they’re going to kill off the 1v1 area of the game because they “don’t have enough time in the schedule.” EVO sets the standard for a lot of tournaments, I can see the 1v1 concept dying out before it even gets a chance to take off. I’m done talking about it though. What’s done is done.

2v2 is different and interesting. If you really want to play 1v1, you can play any other EVO game with that format.

for the first to parts heaven forbid a player actually pratice and level up his characters
I dont care about lame play lol and i doubt some players are going to either
2 differnt play styles is why you have more than one character

you could but then its not this game, flawed logic so the people that wanted to enter evo for this game 1v1 should just go oh ok i’ll just do something else

That’s how it is for every other game that doesn’t make the cut at EVO. There’s also the option of entering the SFxT 1v1 side tournament, as there will certainly be one.

dose that mean people cant be vocal about how displeased they are?
also who goes to evo for a side tournament?

Think about the thousands of people watching you play top 8 at EVO. Nothing is certain. It doesn’t matter how good you are or think you have practiced for a tournament. Having to focus on playing one character eases the stress, because it’s the same amount of work for your team but half that for yourself.

If you want us to stop acting psychic, start playing 2v2 more before you jump to conclusions that it’s same. Though that is what the SFxT board is good for nowadays.

And stop the damn dancing! Act like you got some goddamn sense people! Damn!

i have to say, a lot of the wind has been taken out of my sails because of this announcement. its gone from the new big game, to a side event that most people will only spend a couple weeks practicing for.

time to learn king of fighters i guess.

yeah I was gonna train up hard now I dont think I really need to,and I too will train in kof

One year (2004 I think) CVS2 was held on 1-game until the top 8 and still the best players got on the top.
Honestly I think that 1-game pools could be viable. Maybe they could reset losses for the semifanals as a bonus?

As someone said earlier, 1v1 1 match 3/5 could be viable

Indeed, it seems that this game is being laid to rest already. lol.

That’d be perfectly acceptable if it’s Double Elim still.

so your saying that 2v2 is better because it makes the game easier to play?
get that out of here , that’s part of the package that’s why some players also stand out from others ,

I never said 2v2 was the same I said its the same to watch , because its the same game
