The best way to get this combo in my opinion is a variation of starters (c.lp, s.lp, or c.mp), s.MK xx ex hadouken xx FADC xx U2 for full animation. This keeps your opponent close enough by cancelling the first hit of the S.MK and allows you to complete the motion.

weird. In training mode, I can get ex hado xx fadc xx u2 from 1.5, but no closer…

I’m afraid my execution is not good enough at this time to cancel :mk: into ex hado consistently. Certainly not in battle conditions.
