The Warhammer Universe Ultimate Thread

/me hates you. lol, i made so many accounts to sign up with and still haven’t received an invite  Watch posting too much about it. A couple of guys at warhammer alliance had their acct banned after breaking the NDA. Well, have fun in there and I cannot wait til I get my hands on this game.

^They were actually reported by people hoping to snatch their beta spots. One case they hadn’t even proved the guy did indeed break the nda, don’t know what happened with that one.

Dude clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Chaos brings the pain like mad.

Alright, I been a bit busy on the painting table lately. Got a few more 40k marines painted up for my Thunderfists chapter. I was worried about going with a primarily yellow scheme, but I use watered down chestnut ink over it and it makes it look less “sunshine” and more gritty, kind of rusty. I was also worried how the black helmet/hands/feet/knees/shoulder pads would look, afraid it would be too busy and make them look like Stryper marines. They look pretty pissed, and I’m satisfied (they would make Stryper proud). I’ll probably do their bases as urban rubble like my IG.

Also working on my Epic marines, and GOD are they easy to paint. I just spray them all with black primer, drybush blood red, then clip them off the sprue, add details, touch up a bit, then glue them on the base. I’ll have these guys ready in no time.

Also, Apoc datasheets have been leaked to the net, and that game is going to make 40k fun again.

LOL @ Chaos being crappy. They have precisely one bad model (Chaos Warrior) and it’s not that the stats are shitty it’s that no one wants to spend 14 points/model on what really amounts to basic infantry.

If you had been picking the Dark Elves/Tomb Kings than I would’ve agreed with that guy’s sentiment. Definitely not Chaos, though.

Watch out man, TK are mean. DE, I agree, pretty terrible. TK are really hard to learn, but watching a good TK player is disgusting. They’re so ridiculously mobile.

I kinda want a TK army, mainly because their infantry look so boss. Love the shields and the swords. They also have a distinctly cooler theme than the ‘omg emo goth’ of the VC.

my army is almost done being painted ill post up some badass photos when i get the army.

That’s for sure, I love the TK feel. Next to Orcs & Goblins they have my favorite flavor. They’ll probably be my secondary army if I ever make one.

I gotta say, the Wood Elves are pretty retarded. I saw a massacre today of Wood Elves versus High Elves, it was pretty bad.

I agree that WE are retarded. Pretty much a headache to play against at all times.

If I could find out how to take decent pictures with our camera, I’d upload some army pics, but they always end up blurry.

Haven’t been keeping up with this stuff lately as i’m in between jobs and as we all know, no money = no warhammer :frowning: Anyway, when does the new Skaven stuff come out? I thought it was this year but could be wrong. I’ve been waiting for it to start an army of warpstone addicted ratmen.

get your camera to use a faster shutter setting, and TRIPOD.

makes a big difference between a hand taken photo, the tripod pretty much gives you cool angles and a very clear sharp images.

Nope, it’s gonna be a bit. If I recall, the leaked GW release schedule only went through Jan or Feb of 2008, and so far nothing for Skaven. The Rumor mill is pretty content that they’re not up for a little while yet.

Blank, thanks for the tips.

No probs Dan? im a amateur photographer so i learned a few things about photos. my friend is getting me a couple HQ choices since its my birthday today but hes keeping a secret till they are painted with my complete army.

And when they do get upgraded, expect to see a nerf in their artillery department.

I also expect Slaves to come up a point in cost.

Skaven are gonna feel the nerf hammer pretty some nasty. They’ve said as much as Games Days.

The problem I have with Skaven is not that they don’t have weakness, it’s that they have a safety for every single one of those weaknesses. They’re no WE, but they’ve definitely got some serious crap coming their way.

Though 7th Ed has mitigated some of their problems, I must admit.

I’d never play Skaven anyway…you have to paint your entire army brown. Not to mention I play a primarily infantry Empire army, I need no more RnF to paint.

Dan, you should post your Empire army up. I wanna see it.

It’s mostly unpainted, but it’s getting there…slowly but surely.

I’ve got at least 4000 points before I start counting characters.

Have you decided on a 2k/2250/3k list yet?

I don’t have my book with me now, but my usual 2.5k list (what we tend to play) is something like:

Templar Grand Master
Heavy Armor
Shield
Barded horse
Laurels of Victory
Sword of Might/Battle

Lvl 2 Scroll Caddy

Warrior Priest
HA
Shield
B. Horse
Hammer of Judgement

Captain
BSB
Armor of Meteoric Iron

24 Swordsmen
Full Command
(BSB goes here)

20 Swordsmen
Full Command

20 Spearmen
Full Command
(Scroll Caddy goes here)

Each block has a ten-man handgunner attachment

2 units of 5 knights each, one White Wolf, one Vanilla, both Inner Circle, the priest rides with the WW, the Grand Master with the 'nilla, both units only have musicians

2 cannons

Hellblaster

A unit or two of 10 archers

That’s the core of it, or most of it at least. Tend to set up a gunpowder hill with the infantry blocks in the center, archers playing free safety, handgunners to the left and/or right, and cavalry on the flanks. It’s the best mix I’ve found so far, performs very well against a pretty wide range of opponents.

Did really well against my friend’s Dwarves the other day, so hopefully a rematch will be in order soon and we’ll see how it goes.

Hmm, didn’t realize there was a Warhammer thread up in SRK here - let alone with some fantasy players! I thought everyone played 40k these days.

Anyways nice to meet you guys, I’m a wood elf player from way back in 4th edition, slowly replacing my old school models with the more recent line. Do any of you guys here attend local or grand tournaments?

Dan, are you liking the new empire rules compared to last edition? I wasn’t too big on the T reduction on the flagellants personally. I’m also very surprised to see empire archers on your list, I haven’t seen those on the board in ages!

I’m not a GT player. I’ve been to a few tournies in my day, and while I want my army books to be balanced for tournament style play, I don’t fancy the atmosphere much.

I love the new Empire rules. Flaggies not some ‘oomph’ in the stats department, but their rules are VERY flavorful and they’re still very effective at what they’re supposed to do: die in droves, and stand their bloody ground. I only have a few of them, and I plan on expanding them into a fully-sized block, but the proxy games I used them in as flank-holders were great. Devoted chaps, really.

Archers lost longbows from 6th, which is something that has left the Empire community sort of scratching their heads, not because it’s necessarily ‘fluffy’ for them to have longbows but…were they really THAT big a deal? In any case, I still use them because they’re skirmishers, and so I use them to screen my units and dance in front of my line with enemy skirmishers (typically the 30 or 40 skinks a buddy of mine runs, whom I curse nightly) or just march block folks.

All in all, the new Empire book is great. No models were lost, lots of new and old units were added, and the ‘balanced’ or combined arms army, which the Empire is portrayed as in the fluff, has only gotten better. I feel there were a few missed opportunities, such as the Engineer, who sucked in 6th, and sucks now in 7th, even though he got lots of new toys, and is somewhat ‘orcish’ in his randomness. Halbrediers are another miss, since there’s still really no reason to take them, but I think it’s more of a problem with the rules for halbreds than it is with Empire halbrediers. Still, an across the board drop in one point is pretty much EXACTLY what was required. GW typically swings the pendulum violently, going too far one way or the other when changing rules. 7 points with shield was too much in 6th, but 5 points with shield would be too few. 6 is pretty much the optimum number.

Cav hasn’t changed much. Pistoliers lost a bit of their effectiveness, but they may have been a bit too shiny to begin with. They are much more specialized now. Outriders are…interesting. I love the figs, but I can’t see myself taking them over a Hellblaster or some handgunners, considering the math works out about the same. Some folks swear by them, since even though they’re move-or-fire like most empire gunnery that falls in that category, they can relocate VERY quickly depending on the situation. I can’t take them because they fill an all-important Special slot, and Special is the new Core.

Artillery is pretty much the same. Hellblaster was too reliable (in a ‘will kill everything it sees before going kaput’ sense) last edition, but now is more effective at long range (no S reduction at > 12"). Cannons and mortars are identical. Hellstorm is pretty hard to hit with (fires like a cannon and THEN scatters like a mortar) but when it hits…S5 pie plate = ;-; .

The magic section was another big missed opportunity, but I guess I’d rather them keep it pretty much the same than screw it up. Though the griffon banner jumping to 55 points, while making sense in terms of reducing the banner’s power, has essentially made the General (exact same as the Elector Count, only new name) worthless, unless you kit him out SPECIFICALLY to be a cheap, footslogging Ld 9.

I’ll review a bit more later…
