The 8 World Warriors.
Abel is said secret android. Being a French Fedor wasn’t enough for him to be interesting. It ties him directly to the main conflict.
First tier: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li
Second tier: Akuma, Zangief, Guile, Cammy (in that order)
Ryu, Ken and Chun-li. Everyone else is optional.
I’m pretty flexible with the roster as long as we don’t fully jettison a chunk of theme. KoF has the right idea that some people can miss out on an episode or two and come back.
With the returning characters deal;
Ryu is always gonna be there, but I don’t think we should ever return to the SF3 idea and only bring back 2 or so of the oldies, cause that’s too polarizing. Definitely feel that Ryu, Chun, Guile, Gief, Cammy can be mainstays if we have to limit things artificially.
I absolutely love Blanka, but want to change up his path so that he evolves. I’ve said it before, but an environmentalist path like Julia Chang’s can do him some good. That way if for an arc, there’s some uncovering of some ancient armor that’s worth a crap ton of money and rumored to power up the wearer, you can fold him into the story and have it that the whole thing, or final piece is on sacred native land and he’s protecting them or something. Heck, you can have him and Ken have a wonky, shakey alliance in the future where Ken’s sponsoring restoration efforts after something happens in Brazil and Blanka’s the face of a certain community so they make waves or something. That way, Blanka has a role to play in this Armor of God episode, but then he can take a mini break in the next episode, Street Fighter 8, and someone else can take his spot.
I like the idea of a somewhat rotating roster. That way, if you can’t find anything for Honda to do in one, he’s out and then a new character gets a shot. I don’t think anyone of the old heroes should be permanently retired. No shipping Guile off to a farm for SF8.
And Juri was eye implant one
I don’t care
As long they keep the right SF imagery of martial arts fighters that rep a style (something both Abel and Juri did well), they can add all the “story” bullshit you want, as said it’s fine to me
Problem is when in SFV Abel wear no more his sf4 Sambo uniform and SFV Juri wear no more her TKD inspired design… both to fit a bullshit story vibe that need them to wear story fitting “on mission” weaker designs
sf4 Abel > sfv one
sf4 Juri > sfv one
Their involution into SFV is exactly a sign of when emphasys on a stupid story may ruin the cast imagery
Two best SF4 designs ruined, but somehow we need more of that
We get “avengers” bullshit is because characters like Ryu ain’t driving the narrative of Street Fighter. It’s characters like Chun, Cammy and Guile. If narrative going to be important going forward than they will create characters who are able to carry a story over bland material arts guy.
Chun-Li, Guile and Cammy aka the jobbers are reactionary characters. Not active, these 3 don’t do anything until the villain makes the first move and things already go south.
I would agree that if every SF story followed a tournament arc, things would get boring real quick. Sure it would give every character equal importance, but if everyone is important, then no one is.
Also, there are some SF characters that have stronger motivations than their other fighters. Like it would mean something if they won/lost.
For instance, if Ryu wins or loses said tournament, nothing changes with him because he’s always gonna be looking for the next fight.
But take someone like Chun-Li and her relationship with M. Bison. Each win gets her one step closer to the man who killed her father. And a lose would be devastating to her for she’d not only feel she failed her father, but if Shadaloo were as dangerous and powerful as they are, they’d make sure somone like her would never get another opportunity to take down M. Bison again.
The characters with the stronger motivations are perfect for building a story around. But that also means that favorites will become supporting, background, or even jobbers.
A Shadow Falls may be a wanky book end, but it certainly was one of the driving lore points for allmost all of Street Fighter, excluding SF3.
The characters that have deeper connections, motivations, and drive to end this organization are Chun-Li, Guile, Cammy, and Nash. If you made the SF story mode focus on these characters and focus on this single plot, then I think story mode would’ve come out much better.
All of a sudden I still got crappy situation, with the draft that I can’t post properly even I cleared my browser.
Ingrid was not even canon and not part of the ARCADE release lol, Try harder.
It’s like Sony Guest characters in SFXT reasoning lol.
.
Are you living under a rock?
What are you talking about as if it was like SFA was a mistake and SF1 is the best story ever lol.
SFA was innovation in the SF series.
All you need is a dream match that’s all.
I like dreammatch too but forcing SF to go tournament story for succeeding games as focus and to give way to bunch of random variety of new characters for the sake of being different reps, might as well just do a brand new fighting game focused into that story or turn every sf title into dreammatches.
Story based characters produce more positive characters and strong fanbase in SF than your so called in "enriching " SF story of random characters because this story characters like Guile, Charlie, Chun li, Urien, Claw, Cammy, Juri, Rose, Oro, Karin, Sakura, Menat, Fang, Kolin, Viper, Abel, Bison and so fort.
This were not random characters that came out of nowhere were just their in the character roster for the sake of variety appeal and aim for some sort of recognition or to prove to themselves.
Wait what, most of the time your saying SF3 was a mistake for cutting down the SF2 cast now it did a better job? LOL
Your contradicting yourself. LOL as usual.

Summary
SF5 did the better job because it takes cues on SFA1 in building initial roster not because they imitate how the casting in SF3, SF2 or SF1.
Clearly SF5 took inspiration with SFA casting not SF3, SF1 or SF2. Which is why ALPHA is always the better route interms of casting and intial roster.
Even bland characters from SF2 and SF1 that were from the best of best from different side of the world fighting each gathered in one tournament for honor, recognition and money. Were turned story relevant characters or they were overhaul to be entirely different in Alpha. While others like mike, joe and etc were like written out of history which makes the tournament they were participated in being questionable in credibility and participants.
like I said before
It’s not a storymode like today but back then arcade mode were more also serve as a story for a single player experience even way back SF1… Even AOF and FF single player mode playthrough in an arcade mode was considered the story of that game.
Everytime we discuss SF2 and SF1, people had already conflicting thoughts with SF2 and SF1 being a tournament or not. Even Capcom keep it vague.
SF1, SF2 and SF3 were known as tournament stories and some events, but they are now heavily questioned and doubt in terms validity.
This games were clearly supposed to represent tournaments with alternative path by playing other fighting game character and has a true events/ending when playing the right character.
We know what happened…Things change… retcons, quotes, SF Alpha, SF4 a bunch of new sources that overwritten the past. that’s why they couldn’t even be justify properly.
Some even do speculate Zangief won against Seth in a tournament organize by Seth in SF4 which had been mentioned in previous storythreads. Would that even be a historical event or would even be reference by other future events and SF games? If not and would go on to another vaguely thing like SF2. So it mean it is a failure also if it won’t be historically acknowledge in future SF games.
Even Gen that was from that so called tournament that he would never mentioned or reference it later in there more recent reappearances. It was like only Birdie and Sagat had fought Ryu.
While those participants like a random masked ninja from a clan that wouldn’t even mentioned later, the average joe in the train graveyard and the mike that was supposed to be Balrog/Boxer.
What core of SF story are you talking about lol Zangief?
You cannot deny things that already exist in SF, it’s about Shadaloo, Secret Society and other organization that linked to them along with those that had strong motivation to stop them and the fighting mascot. Thats the story of SF not about multiple tournament saga with new and fresh random participants that would claim to be the best of the best.
I don’t know what’s with you sudden obsession with Zangief from a guy like you that usually shill for skinny boys especially if they are italians.
And don’t used Zangief to justify the mistake of most random character in that idea of martial artist over story character, because Gief and Dhalsim is also now shifted to story based character since ALPHA. They don’t belong anymore along the side of just the sake of random variety martial artist for a tournament over story based characters. What you are into are more randomness and new for the sake of something new variety of martial arts like Joe, Mike, Geki and etc.
Yes but those motif works effectively with few characters that are mostly consistent not something that is revolving cast like a fighting game that can’t even stick with their history and consider other characters achievements as a staple to it’s history or would be references later.
There are certain things that work well in a tournament arc saga in anime, because it revolves on exploration of the world by a certain group or an individual to be against the is unseen and unknown. The thing is were in Street Fighter that is a fighting game were things should be worldly and most of the rotating roster should atleast keep up with each other. It’s not even centered to the perspective of Ryu or Chun li and whatsoever.
Aa multiple tournament story works for something like “Hajime no Ippo” because they keep everything mostly grounded to world and they build the world perspective not entirely revealed and huge. There is no world domination, mystical power, international terrorist and secret organization trying to manipulate the world. And most importantly the character is not in battle that they would be a chance of them to get killed or them to be like Goku having multiple transformation and would battle multiple deity from different planes. Encounter and match up is human as much as possible. SF isn’t like that as soon projectiles of ki energy were shown in the screen.
I mean with the
WHO fights WHO? WHO beats WHO? and WHO meets WHO? What happened? Was about about SF1 and Sf2 being failed as a tournament story because they were retcon either ignored or not reference anymore that the victors, encounter and participant even questioned of being the worthy to be part of that tournament, along with their encounter,
I don’t necessarily need these characters to be wearing their material arts attire as long as they fight in whatever style they rep. I want these characters to look as awesome as they can be.
FTFY
Oh yeah, with all the talks of the series tied to SF, I’ve been thinking of Captain Commando, and with Captain Commando, I’m a huge, obsessed fan so my thoughts are never too far from it.
For a while, I’ve gone back and forth on if it should be tied to SF since it’s super far out with Aliens, space travel and just a lot of fun. A year or so I had the fun idea that in SF, Captain Commando is a series that Ken made for Mel and started a production line to fictionalize the SF events and even bankroll a few Fei Long movies. Today I passed this when looking for info about Scumocide:
Yuta Himura, Ibuki’s friend, is stated to good at clearing Captain Commando. He’s able to " clear a game of Captain Commando with Mack the Knife in a single credit on the arcade". So I guess all the Metro City references are because the game creators love Haggar and the events of the FF inspired them to make a game set in the iconic world.
Kinda works. blond hero, bushin-ryu user.
Also, bit of irony, but in the Captain Commando manga (which I highly recommend) a character called Bils is basically SFV Cody. don’t know if anyone noticed that before. I’ll post a picture later.
So tl;dr, if it were up to me, I’d probably keep Captain Commando as it’s own thing and for fun have it be a source of fiction in SF, and let it get as big and wacky as possible without having to worry about mucking up Street Fighter’s future.
Anyways, done rambling hah.
Yes, and it’s always been terrible.
Arcade Mode has ALWAYS been awful at telling stories, tournament or otherwise. SF has never had a decent tournament story because SF5 was SF’s ONLY decent story, and that game happened to not have a tournament.
If you made a SF game with a real story mode than also took place during a tournament, you’d probobably end up with a decent tournament story.
They almost always look the most awesome in their martial arts attire.
Hard disagree. Balrog looks best in his white suit, shades and diamond encrusted gloves. I always liked Chun in her Alpha design over classic. I like her police uniform and evening gown. I’ll take Urien in his suit over the thong. Juri battle outfit is easily her best. Plushie Blanka is best Blanka.
Sound how Tekken ruined his character design trying hard to look cool
Another “no thanks”
Go die.
I’d argue her Alpha outfit is just as much a martial arts outfit as her default.
Agree with this one.
Again, the battle outfit is just as martial artsy. But no, Nostalgia is still the clear winner.
None of Blanka’s outfits are martial arts to begin with.
I think Tekken has the best character design when it comes to fighters.
Woah is this a new profile?
Fixed.
No.
