The TTT2 General Discussion thread

To put some of my limited insight towards the earlier post about getting randomed out;

At times simply knowing that your opponent will be attacking or overly aggressive is enough to land a punish. I.e. space yourself and punish accordingly. Find your own gimmicks and cheese it up yourself. Play to learn and try new things. Have fun with it and don’t expect to win right away (come on you HAVE played other fighting games right?)

So a friend of mine wants TTT2, but before that he asked me if I knew some good rushdown characters in the game. The thing is, I don’t know the game very well so I don’t know what to tell him.

Lars, Steve, Jin, Kunimitsu, and Leo are all pretty agressive, rushdown characters.

I think I’m going to play lobbies more, especially with the players talking to me. I cannot win for the life of me in ranked at all nor can I react to lows for some reason nor am I reliably good at grab breaks.

One important question though. Are King and Xiaoyu meant for playing at mid-range because I’ve noticed I get walloped close range and have more consistent results at mid-range.

xiayou can be played in a myriad of styles, but she excels at close-range where she can be extremely evasive, mobile, and generally safe. AoP is her signature stance because it ducks under highs, some mids, and even some lows. it also has a built in minor sidestep right(?). moves like d/f+1, D/F+1, 4~3, 1>d+2, ff+3, ws+2, magic 4, ss+4, and AoP mixups, are just a few things to get you started. iirc, all backturned low jabs actually hit low instead of normal low jabs which hit special mid (moves that can be blocked low or mid), so considering xiayou can get into BT very easily with RDS (rain dance stance) and moves that transition into it, gives her more frequent access to that very quick low poke.

king’s moves generally are slow to execute and will tend to get beat out up-close from faster characters, but he has tools to help him in those situations.
backdash for starters will help you with creating space.
d+1~2 is one of kings main anti-pressure moves and is also a high crush.
b+1 is a great move to CH fish with as its relatively fast, and will produce an unescapable stun on CH. its only -6(?) on block but its high (which is irrelevant when its applied properly).
u/f+4 hopknee. space it properly.
d,d/f+2. use it.
d/f+2,1 CH fishing. not the greatest, but you’ll get a pretty good reward if it hits. second hit is high and will be ducked if your opponent recognizes it.
kings magic 4, while not being as fast as other characters magic 4’s, is still good to throw out every now and again to get a CH juggle.
d/b+3 is a decent crush and will pass right under highs and some mids, but it suffers from a little bit of slowness. fortunately, it’s a juggle starter on CH.
ws+4. good generic ws+4.
f+3 is a decent mid to fish with at close range because you can input the just-frame throw followup for it (1+2) on block. if it hits, they get slammed, if they block, king is only at -9(?). (note: not to sure about this moves CH properties in ttt2, will need to test).
f+1+4 chest bump.
king has a strong attack reversal (AR) game because none of his reversals can be reversed/chickened (ARR). he can reverse ALL kicks, and ALL right punches only. so no left punch attacks, and no elbow or knee attacks.
there’s some other stuff that i wouldn’t recommend like cd chain throws, rock bottom, black shoulder, ss+2, d,d/f+1, ssl+u/b+1, b+4 (scrubby kings use this alot), CH ali kick>mid smash, some others, but you can use those moves sparingly.

Can someone please tell me what the overall playstyle of these characters are? bruce, marshall law, jin, bob, nina, miguel, baek? I am struggling to settle on a team.

This is what screws me against the Kings though. If i don’t memorize exactly the button presses to counter the grab chains, i’m fucked. Its one of the reason why Tekken requires more dedication to learn every single character…or you lose haha.

I used to call myself a Marvel player.

Now I’m beginning to call myself a Tekken player. TTT2 FTW!

I shouldn’t be airing my frustrations on GD anyways.

Quick question on side stepping. Is there a general rule of thumb for sidestepping certain moves? Like does the limb used to hit indicate which way I should move to side step if the motion isn’t linear?

How do I unlock more sexy things for my characters??
I certainly don’t wanna try my hand online again anytime soon

Ghost battle against the CPU, everytime you win against a team that appears with a gold border you unlock more customisation stuff.

Great, I’m maining low tiers again. rofl it’s almost like I’m doing it on purpose but honestly I just play the characters I like but it just happens that they are always considered low tier.

I gotta say, with the amount of bitching I’m hearing/reading about Chreddy and Law, I’m surprised they are only B tier.

Tiers do not mean much in this game.

Some characters have considerably better tools than others in different areas, but for the most part character balance is a lot more well-rounded than most games. Like, if you’re as good as your opponent, then playing a “crappy” character against a “godlike” character in Tekken is nowhere near as polarizing as playing UMVC3 Hsien-Ko vs Zero.

To anyone who wants to get better at this game on tourney level, this is a simple tip that I always use while I’m playing the game:

Defence before offence

In Tekken it’s really easy to let your opponent’s attack whiff and equally difficult to let your own attack connect. Whiffpunishing is therefore a big aspect in Tekken. Make use of that by improving on your movement/spacing. If your spacing is good, then it’ll force your opponent to do an attack that will whiff for a whiffpunish. But make sure to not keep up the defence for too long as it’ll make you open for attacks after a while. Just a simple fast jab/kick or mid out of range will signal to your opponent that you don’t want him so close to you that easy (just as they do in boxing).

In short: whiffpunish like you’re Mike Tyson.

generally, yes. but sometimes the move just shoots forward linearly and you can sidestep either way.

I wanna make note that in this game you’re gonna have to play a lot if you intend on learning your character as well as everyone else. you have a big command list and I’d recommend either using the moves you’re comfortable with and the ones that are good. don’t be afraid to try these moves out in single player just to get a feel for the game. online will be frustrating as hell if you don’t know what the hell you’re doing/wanna do.

Thanks. One more thing though, he wanted to know how Anna would be categorized.

I’m not exactly sure but, considering the Anna players I’ve fought, she’s a more defensive character. She has the tools to rush down but, she excels at whiff punishing after the opponent makes a mistake. That’s what I’ve gathered, at least.

Well, I do play a lot of ghost mode so that should help.

Are your characters not straightforward? That may explain that. As for the Capos and Laws, they tick me off to no end, but I know that the reek of what I call the Blanka Gate.

Really REALLY hate ranked matches in 3d games, when people start to lose they just throw all thinking about combos or set ups and mash. That and ive yet to fight someone my actual rank, its either 20 ranks above or bottom of the barrel mash jab. -sigh- another fighting game with a crap amount of good people in ranked.
