The Superman Thread: PREACH IT, goody!

Time to confess: I enjoy Superman books more than Batman books, and World of New Krypton #2 is a reason why.
…along with All-Star Superman.

Excuse the double post, but is it true that World of New Krypton is going to be 15 issues now?
cuz if so FUCK YEAR!

I’m doing a presentation on visual techniques in comics storytelling for one of my classes. I’ve chosen to do it in the form of a PowerPoint slide show. I’ve picked five of my favorite pages, each from a different comic, and I’m basically doing a breakdown of the goals of the page, the techniques being used to achieve those goals, how they work, the history behind them, and so on. I’m layering in the comments to turn on and off with mouse clicks.

I have to present a sample of the project to my class today, so I’m going to use the slide in which I discuss a page from All Star Superman #1. It utilizes a total of 24 mouse clicks from beginning to end.

Well, see, now that you’ve brought it up, you have to find a way to show the rest of us this presentation. YouTube this, bub.

I might do just that. Something of the interactivity will be lost (I specifically chose a point-and-click style presentation so the reader could control the pace, just like in a comic), but I suppose the content would still be there.

I still don’t feel like I’ve milked everything out of this one page, either. I’ve barely said anything about the first panel, I haven’t discussed the color choices, the use of body language, blah blah blah…

(It’s the page in which Clark rushes to Perry’s office, tripping and catching the guy’s coffee cup along the way.)

Absolute Superman: For Tomorrow came out yesterday and is in my latest order batch which will arrive next week. I havent read this one but it seems to garner pretty strong reviews both for and against, and I usually like those kind of books.

How is new krypton coming along? I havent looked to see if the trades are going to collect multiple titles or if they will stick to the issues in their respective titles. Personally I dont plan on following it outside of the Greg Rucka issues, but if those are broken up I probably wont bother.

Doing a special Superman-related thing on my blog next week. Details in today’s entry.

Cross-posting in both my blog thread and the Superman thread, because this is relevant to both. Today is the first half of a two week long Superman review retrospective.

I feel this renews my nerd credentials, in case anybody feels I’ve been slacking lately. If my math is correct, I reviewed no less than 14 titles for today, with an even larger number coming next week.

g00dy one quick question from a fellow supes fan

  1. Should Supes be just Vulnerable to Magic (as he is right now) just like EVERY OTHER SUPERHERO who does not have special magical defenses (this makes Cap, Iron Man, GL and other tights with no magic defenses “Just as weak” against Magic as Supes)

  2. or should he be really Weak against Magic making Magic something like a special Achilles heel that has more effect on him than ANYONE ELSE like Kryptonite?

For internal logic’s sake, I wouldn’t give him any particular weakness to magic that nobody else has. Your open-and-shut explanation is that he, like most people in the DC Universe, doesn’t have a special way of dealing with magic that makes him immune to it. It’s probably pushing it to give him two Achille’s heels.

Besides, if you’re hanging out with Alan Moore on his nuttier days, he’ll tell you all about how magic is as easy as conjuring ideas into your head and putting them into words. And as we all know, it’s the choices of the writers that ultimately help or hurt characters more than anything else, and Superman is no exception.

I just hate it that everyone immediately assumes andything magic can whoop him easily just because it’s magic when in fact

80% of all superheroes Marvel and DC doesn’t have any special Magical defenses.

Thus 80% of all Superheroes are “Weak” against Magic LOL!

Sagat in CvS2 is weak against Magic  beware the M-Groove

The second half of the Superman retrospective. This is pretty much all you could possibly care about. Seriously.

Routh’s contract as movie Superman is up. Who knows if they will use him again next time around.

http://www.superherohype.com/news/supermannews.php?id=8479

I actually hope they do use him again…just get rid of Kate Bosworth.

Gorath- World of New Krypton is awesome, prob. one of the best books from DC ATM.

Routh deserves another shot at the role if he wants it. And if he doesn’t appear as Superman again, he’s already got his foot in the door with both Bryan Singer and Kevin Smith, so I doubt he’s in any danger of becoming the next George Lazenby.

To be honest, Routh or no, I dread what the next Superman movie will be.

Out of curiosity, as SRK’s resident Super-nerd, what did you think of “Superman Returns”? I personally thought it was pretty good, and that a lot of its hate is unjustified. Which is part of why I, too, am nervous about the next Superman film.

I included it in my review retrospective, which is located here.

I agree completely. I just really don’t understand the hate the film gets. I’m not saying it’s my favorite superhero film by any stretch, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and, as a whole, felt it captured the character well. I just know the new film will be far too action oriented and will probably destroy all of the Superman magic and wonder…

I’m a fan of Superman Returns as well. I still think it’s one of the best superhero movies. It’s got a certain sense of classiness in the way it approaches the character that most movies of this ilk tend to lack.

Also, Superman didn’t throw a single punch during the entire movie, and he didn’t fight a giant mechanical spider. Icing on the cake, baby.
