The Superman Thread: PREACH IT, goody!

Has All-Star Supes #13 dropped yet? If so is it good?

Nope. Not really sure what’s going on with the series now. Last I heard, there was a chance that Morrison might write a few more issues of it, but Quitely’s finished with his part and there isn’t an artist attached. Chris Weston (THE FILTH) volunteered for the job, but I don’t know if anything has been announced officially. Scuttlebutt is that Quitely and Morrison’s next job together is the main Batman sometime after the Gaiman/Kubert “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?” story.

I enjoyed Morrison’s Beyond Superman 3D a lot. Unlike All Star Superman the story is steeped in continuity and ties directly into Final Crisis. All that aside Morrison still writes a great Superman, makes him come off as epic / legendary, wish he always written that way.

This is likely to be unrelated to what is currently being talked about here, but ever since I found out about Superman’s new sweet Batman corpse, I’ve been doing some digging on Wikipedia (the shame) about what exactly is going on in Final Crisis right now.

So many damned people to follow that it puts Bleach to shame.

Anyway, I found this at the end of the Darkseid entry about 15 minutes ago.

Enjoy (or not).

ALL STAR SUPERMAN VOL 2 (collecting 7-12) is out this wednsday everyone go pick that up i know im going too

SUPERMAN: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW? DELUXE EDITION HC
Written by Alan Moore
Art by Dave Gibbons, Curt Swan & George Perez, Kurt Schaffenberger, Murphy Anderson and Rick Veitch & Al Williamson
Cover by Brian Bolland
Legendary writer Alan Moore?s seminal Superman issues are collected in this Deluxe Edition hardcover featuring beautiful art from Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN), Curt Swan (ACTION COMICS) and Rick Veitch (SWAMP THING)! Collects the two-part ?Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?? from SUPERMAN #423 and ACTION COMICS #583 as Superman faces his greatest foes and his final battle! Also featuring the classic story ?For the Man who has Everything? from ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #11 where Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman fight the evil warlord Mongul for the fate of The Man of Steel. And in DC COMICS PRESENTS #85, Superman meets Swamp Thing, a character fans have identified with Moore for over 20 years!

Rick Veitch? Wow, loved his TMNT Sky Highway story (original TMNT comic continuity) waaaay back in the day. I’m really fond of it and that’s his only work I’ve ever read. He drew the issue too. Veitch is out of his mind, in a good way. The One has been on my get around to reading list since forever…

Rick Veitch is a fantastic artist and writer. It’s just a shame that Deluxe Edition hardcover is going to be so expensive. I already own all of those stories in other TRADES, BABY, too. DC’s really trying to get people to buy stuff multiple times.

Sounds like a nice collection of stories, but I’m not sure I’d shell out for the deluxe hardcover. They’re all available together already in DC’s Alan Moore collection, which is less expensive and includes a lot of other terrific stories.

(I know turning down a Moore/Superman compendium sounds like heresy coming from me, but it seems kind of silly to pay more money for less stories and a slightly thicker cover.)

It’s not the most shocking news, but an unrestored copy of Action Comics #1 (cover dated June, 1938) just auctioned off for $317,200.

The cover art is probably up there with the American flag, the golden arches, the Mickey Mouse silhouette, and the Superman emblem itself as one of the most well-known images in our culture.

It’s easy to take for granted how coveted this comic book is, but think about it. From 10 cents to $317,200 is over a three million percent mark-up. Not bad for a character who was initially rejected by every publisher in town for years. (Will Eisner was among them, though in his defense, his company was small and didn’t have the resources to publish the comic at the time.)

If anybody wants to read an online copy of the first Superman story ever published, you can find one here.

All Star Superman #10…best single issue comic of the past 20 years?

I would say that it’s among the best of the modern stuff that I’ve read, yeah. I’m not exactly fond of monthlies, so I won’t make any claims that I can’t back up, but I can’t say I’ve seen anything better, either.

It’s top tier. I don’t really think there’s much point in trying to figure out if it’s, y’know, THE BEST out of every single comic ever published in the past 20 years… Who can really claim to have read everything to be able to make such a definitive statement? And 20 years is a long, long time. But it’s a claim I wouldn’t argue, either. I wouldn’t mock anyone for proclaiming ASS #10 as the best thing ever.

Just looking at the page with Supes talking the goth girl out of suicide is an example of why ASS #10 is the best single issue of all time.

What kicked me in the balls the hardest was the tiny universe. Not only is it clever meta-fiction, but it’s also an entirely relevant commentary on how our fictions influence our realities. We don’t have these amazing heroes with extraordinary strength and courage in real life, so we create them in order to take inspiration from them. Fantastic.

I was just gonna say that the words and drawings kicked ass. I guess all that pretentious stuff about “meta-fiction” and “relevant commentary” works, too.

Well, the words and the drawings did kick ass. The “this one will change everything” panel is probably the best panel ever drawn in the history of things that have panels. And all Quitely had to do was draw in a hand with a pencil, then trace over shit that he didn’t even draw. That’s economy.

The Superman drawing was my second favorite moment of the series after the goth girl, GM captured all the essence of Superman in one page and with one line.

First time I’ve read this story. Holds up pretty well considering. Thanks a lot!
