Samus being a non-character is exactly why Other M is a betrayal of it. It adds context that nobody asked for and gave her a shitty personality that nobody can relate to.
Her being an almost faceless, emotionless robot for most of the series is why people like her. She was a silent, mysterious protagonist capable of blowing planets apart. It gave you this surprisingly effective connection to her as the player becuase both you and her are expiriencing these cold, almost lifeless worlds with the same amount of apprehension and suspense. She is an excellent perspective to place the player within.
Samus is an orphan who had everyone she loved murdered by Space Aliens, after which she then lives and trains with an alien species who bestows her with technology that practically makes her a God. And now she lives out her days mostly alone on her ship or fighting random alien hostiles as one of the most feared and legendary bounty hunters in the galaxy. There’s no reason for her to be this expressive, dialog filled character and it wouldn’t make sense anyway.
The character was portrayed subtly, and always said so much by saying so little. Other M throws all that cool shit in the fucking trash. She has always been subdued and mostly silent, I don’t really think that’s evidence of being a bad character tho. It services so many things within the games.

The creator of the series wrote the plot for Other M, right? So I guess that’s how he considers her to be.
Other M is an extremely sexist game.
And no, I do not say this as lightly as the Twitter Thots. I mean the full weight and connotations of that word.
Sakamoto must’ve drank a gallon of LSD if he truly thinks the character should be portrayed like that.
And yeah, iirc he’s the director of OG Metroid, Super Metroid and Fusion.
All better games that did Samus’s character better. Doubly so for Fusion.

Sakamoto even to this day sees zero problems with Other M (even the objective issues it had on a performance and design level) and considers it one of his best games yet so, do what you will with that information.
Regardless of what he may say, I very highly doubt you’ll see him green lighting Other M 2 or anything in that style again.
I’ll take the characterization that’s been set up over the past almost dozen games, compared to the lazy writing he left us with in 1 game. Thanks.

Fusion is my favorite Samus.
The emotionless depictions prior and whatever OtherM is are pretty wack character wise.
I didn’t like Samus the character till Fusion.
She’s the same emotionless robot in Fusion. You just get some extra lines of dialog compared to a lot of the other games. I’m curious to hear what exactly changed your mind.
She did spare The Baby, y’know.
It’s the small things. Like her going the extra mile to shove her arm cannon down Ridley’s throat to fire some extra disrespectful and damaging shots in Prime 3. That really sells how much beef these two got.
Yeah, Other M was made completely and 100% how they wanted to make it.
There was no time crunch, there was no executive meddling, no complete and utter failure of troubleshooting or anything like that. The game was made exactly how it was planned to be made. And one can argue that’s the biggest tragedy of all. The creator of Metroid actually thought this is where the series should go.
Notably, hasn’t been really seen since.

Less silent is less boring.
Fusion wasn’t like some gigantic leap of character development mind you. Samus was always just some random cold broad in a suit kicking ass. I’d say I liked the metroid games and Samus was there and hella replaceable.
Fusion was kinda like hey there’s a talking human who can feel things in there.

Real talk tho, the one prop I’m willing to give Other M, no “potential”, no asterisks, is how good the graphics are.
That game looks good. It did even for Wii standards, but it upscaled to HD looks really good.
Do those several lines of dialog in Fusion really make you like the character that much more tho? I mean she talked in Super Metroid too.
Ive never liked silent or mostly silent protags.
