Hollow Knight is amazing but really different from Super Metroid in a lot of different ways. Hell the amount of computational space they could use to make the game being one of them.

Some of the bosses in Hollow Knight were poorly made. The big one being the big rock laser guy. That was literally the hardest boss in the game purely because he just did random shit with no rhyme or reason. I died an insane amount of times to that just because it was literally a dude spazzing out doing random stuff that dealt too much damage.

I almost said the environments were better in HK & CV:SOTN than SM but considering what SM had to work with back in the day it feels like a petty complaint.

Yeah, they nailed the difficulty in HK imo. There aren’t often I have to make multiple attempts on bosses in this genre. Last time I died this much in a Metroidvania was Metroid Fusion.

Ditto Fusion. Not even Strider tested my ability to mash like my life depended on it. That face-melting boss in Fusion tho…

Reading around the web it seems like everyone has that one boss in Hollow Knight that gave them trouble but no one else had any problems with. I mean everyone hits the Watcher Knights like wtf, but… the only reason I didn’t get crystal head on the first try was cause I had no life and the bench made me think I was safe. Others hated the boss with the rotating shield but I breezed through it. But the Traitor Knight? Everyone says EZ but for some reason it mopped the floor with me a dozen times even with an NPC helping me out. Had to go find new powerups for that one.

Its possible that they could’ve done more, but what they did with Super Metroid is freaking great. I need to get my SNES back so I can play it again.

Yeah I felt the original Zelda had a better “sense of place” than SM. “This is the graveyard, this is the river valley, this is the dead forest,” etc. But I can’t distinguish between Brinstar and Meridian except by the palette and background music. Supposedly SM had a wrecked ship but it was just another tile swap to me. :shrug:
