So I have what amounts to a dumb question but it actually factors a good deal into whether I decide to try Steve seriously.
I know Steve is strongest in rushing people down so in that he plays like an in-fighter: using his fast hands and mobility (dodging moves) to keep the pressure on. But I want to know if one can also successfully apply an out-fighting strategy with him at times, taking a slightly more defensive approach and using his dodge options to bait and punish and the like.
So I guess what I am asking is if his kick buttons have utility in neutral or are they really only used when you are on the warpath inside?
Always liked Steve but all his moves and difficult techniques made me shy away from him like a scrub. Naturally I will not be using all his moves at first but knowing that things like dodge and Peekaboo have really practical purposes will give me the drive to try, because I watch too much Ippo.
Yes! Found this board! Picked up Steve while board was down, was dying to read info, running Steve with Yoshi(Tough team I know but I need the challenge)

Watch vids of Ryan Hunter, he’s godlike with Julia x Steve.<br>
Loving Steve so much, y this board so ded? Having issues using Steve in matches though but I’m getting better at ainti airing, and using him effectively.

Truth be told most steve players went to dudley. I went around that by just using the team Dudley/Steve :D<br>
I see, can’t say i blame them Dudley is technically “better”? Is that accurate? lol i tried that team it’s pretty good Its hard even finding Steve vids where hes not getting bodied :/

<div class=“QuoteText”>Is steve’s counter his whole body? I thought it was just his upper body but I could swear it countered a crouching attack I did.</div>

Steve’s counter is not full body but does cover pretty much everything above his feet. So some low attacks that don’t hug the ground will get countered.<br><blockquote class=“Quote”>

I have not found a good use for Peekaboo as an offensive tool since the startup is not grab invincible like the stance. So in a way I feel that if you were to use peekaboo, it would be for more defensive purposes. Cutting elbow is an excellent anti air and leads to decent damage, you can use the armor on patella smash to go into albion and get a combo or tag cancel on block for mixups. You can use L/M weave to dodge fireballs. It could work in theory.<br><br>
I take that back. you can combo into peekaboo off of cl.hp into cutting elbow and juggle that multiple times. In the corner, you can do the elbow juggle 3 times into a cr.hp off of a flicker cancel into super in the corner w/ Steve.
Continuing from the other thread of things I left out.
Spoiler
Regarding flicker canceling (the next level of Steve’s gameplay):
You know how on a wakeup meaty cl. mp you get only one cr.mp for pressure afterwards?
Well you can cl.mp, then flicker cancel into TWO cr. mp because the pushback from the cl. mp has been reduced leaving you a close enough distance to perform an extra cr. mp. (Same can be done with cl. hp but I like cl. mp better for the crouch counter hit.)
Another frame trap is cl. hp flicker cancel to cr. hp. Why?
Not sure on the frame advantage here or disadvantage in any case, but from the pushback from cl. hp is just right enough for you to catch out a limb using cr. hp if the opponent attempts to attack in between hits. Make sure your buffering ducking just incase the cr. hp hits so you can go into your fox hunt > BnB. (cr. hp will just whiff if no limbs are thrown out so be careful)
Gimmicks/Tricks:
After a blocked Foxhunt (-3 on block), you can either back dash or if you notice the opponent likes to press buttons cause they know the frame advantage. Just use your Sway (Steve’s counter). If it hits, just do cross cancel into your parnter’s BnB. (Careful for something that go through Sway cause its only upper body invincibility)
You can cancel any ducking into peekaboo. So use it againts those SPD/command throw mashers. (His Nutella smash is also good here).
Do something like cr. mp > duck > peekaboo > Nutella smash.
Bonus/Swag:
Get a cl. mp crouch counter hit > quickspin > another cl. mp > flicker cancel > 2x cr.mp > ducking > foxhunt > BnB
Idk it just looked cool when I did it.
Might have forgotten other stuff too. Will add later if I can remember.
I’ve been trying to advance these setups a bit. For example, a better blockstring is cl.mp, flicker, cr.hp, flicker, cr. mp, ducking, foxhunt, (Only if foxhunt lands) ex sonic fangs, cr.hp, ducking, skyscraper, ducking bodys, flicker, lp (mp or hp if you want to switch characters w/o meter). more can be done off of that string like spin to HP.
Something extra interesting, so Steve gets a 50/50, charge a fireball then cancel, you have the choice of performing an overhead to combo into skyscraper or you can do cr.lk into cr.mp to combo into foxhunt. This gives Steve a 50/50 on his attacks. Trying to make it more solid.
this character…is really fun and challenging to play, I don’t know why peeps would drop him for Dudley Oh thats right Dudleys “Better” …They’ll be back lol,
Very informative stuff Toolman & Eastern, want to go learn these!
Guy’s is there a steve neutral game guide? I mean my execution isn’t bad so far the only thing I’m having trouble with is walk fwd flicker cancels,I think it was either cl.mp or fwd.mp lp fc st.hp fc cr.hp. I’ve got down any crouch cancel flickers.
I feel like I can move on to actually playing him but when I’m fighting I’m clueless.
Does anyone have a good video or guide for getting started with Steve? It doesn’t need to be beginner friendly; just thorough.
I get paranoid when I see a combo thread that’s really old on the first page so I get worked up over it because I want practical optimal combos off various hit-confirms.
