You could make the case that every aspect of our person has a genetic component. But very little can be explained by genetics alone, almost every facet of our being involves an interplay of genetic and environmental factors weighted differently in each case. And when it comes to something as complex as behavior, explaining it away by genetics is usually a cop out. Even linking handedness itself to genetics is problematic, with environmental factors usually winning out (it is easy to imagine why), so linking something to handedness as a way of arguing genetic predisposition for a behavior is even more problematic.
But to the authors’ credit they didnt make a genetic argument, rather they made an argument from physiology, a subtle (sneaky) disticntion. Especially when it comes to sexuality issues, I think that because people dont see themselves as having a choice in the matter that the behavior is determined by genetics from conception. I think that this is highly unlikely with something as complex as behavior/intelligence/etc, when there is developmental and environmental factors at play. All these facostrs cooperate in composing your person and personality. Just because you are the way you are (and feel no choice in the matter) this does not mean this was your genetic destiny. No matter how many scientists are obsessed with genetic determinism in its countless incarnations. If genes dont have absolute determinism regarding your fingerprints, what say do they have in more complex aspects of your ongoing development. And just becuase certain aspects of your person are shaped by the environment rather than genetic makeup, this doesnt make it any easier to will a reversal.
My point is that invoking genetics for the sake of bringing up the argument that pedophiliacs have no control over their desire is not necessary (not to mention that the use of repeat offenses as evidence for genetic factors is a bit silly). Genetic determinism is overstated imo. hahaa. A pet peeve definitely, and as aside to the topic I realize ive added l;ittle to the discussion; but I cant say it interests me at all otherwise, other than to say I am not inclined to offer much sympathy at all in that direction. And I didnt read anything outside of the bolded passage.

just skimming this thread, @pedroviejo is making most of the points that i would. the arguments against pedophiles are damn near identical to the ones people made/make about homosexuality and now that the science is starting to come in society should probably start reevaluating.
I know what you mean, but it’s all irrelevant. Personal definitions mean little when you consider the reality of the situation, which is: pedophiles are physically attracted to prepubescent children. A girl who is 14 and post-puberty does not resemble a prepubescent child, therefore, she does not garner the attention of the pedophile(theoretically).
Men who are attracted to post-pubescent boys or girls are not pedophiles. We’ve already established that. We can use a different label to talk about that, and that would be more appropriate, but still not relevant to this thread topic. That’s all I was trying to say.
I’ve had this pedophile discussion before, and it always fascinates me because people tend to become very aggressive towards pedophiles, regardless of whether or not they’ve actually done anything wrong. I’m actually surprised to see people being so civil here, since that’s usually not the case.
I haven’t really looked into hebephilia. The whole thing is very annoying to discuss, because you have legal age restrictions and negative stigmas clouding the issue. I think it generally does come down to maturity level and past sexual experiences. I believe it’s morally wrong to take advantage of someone’s inexperience and ignorance for your own personal gratification.
My stance wasn’t that pedophiles have absolutely no choice, but that a predisposition will certainly dictate how they rationalize their urges. I even mentioned earlier how the prefrontal cortex is what defines humans and our ability to go against the grain from our basic “programming”, so to speak. Granted, I enjoy discussing determinism, but I really don’t want the topic to digress into a philosophical discussion. What determines true free will has many layers, both in genetics and quantum physics. (Hm… maybe there’s another thread for that. :razzy:)
