Oh fuck, I was never any good at these and don’t play them much… is there a thread for 3d ones then…hands up and slow backs away from thread
I have no idea if there is a thread for Gun Shooter style games. If not you should make one.
who figured out the hitbox thing with these games? i’ve seen an espgaluda 2 run, and a couple of dodonpachi runs where the player should’ve been killed, but wasn’t. also, what’s this black label thing? More stages and some minor tweaks?
the hitboxes are the the inner most yellowish circle on the character, and IIRC the white part of enemy fire. The purple just serves to highlight it.
Those hit boxes just keep getting smaller and smaller so they can floor the screen with more and more bullets lol.
raystorm HD is pretty good
My friend got Raiden IV and Death smiles for xbox 360. I completely forgot about shmups so I went and downloaded hitogata happa, gundemonium recollection and solder x 2.
They’re all fun. I can’t get pass the 2nd level in hitogata though.
Actually, some guys on shmups forum checked it out and found that there was some slowdown removed from the US version, both in 360 and Arcade modes. Not sure why that is, perhaps Aksys wanted to avoid slowdown complaints in reviews or something? It’s apparently enough to where scores between the JPN and US versions can’t be directly compared.
I can’t think of any other reason why they did this. Slowdown was removed from every mode (from what I hear 1.1 being the absolute worst). Its pretty much a different game if you’re going for score… making this bastardized release pointless :-/
On the plus side though it seems to be doing fairly well sales-wise and hopefully that encourages more games to be brought over.
Thankfully, I’m broke as fuck. Otherwise, I would have bought DS on Day 1.
Thanks for the heads up guys.
I wouldn’t say it’s “pointless”, it’s just different. I mean, unless you already own a Japanese 360 and a Japanese copy of the game with all the DLC content, I don’t see any reason NOT to pick this game up, especially if you want to see more of these kinds of games stateside.
Not being 100% arcade accurate =/= not good. The game is still amazing and still well worth the money.
Well I guess it’s good that I can’t even 1cc it yet, let alone think of obtaining a super high score that would require that lol
Unless you ARE one of those people good enough to only think about score, don’t let this stop you from buying it. The game still rocks.
I thought there was an option to have slowdown or not…in the options.
Oh, I’ll definitely buy DS at some point. I’m just pretty anal about arcade perfect ports, regardless of whether it’s for score or not.
If they really did take out the slowdown in fear of negative reviews, then that’s total bullshit.
actually the whole collection, gundemonium recollection, gundeadlige, and hittogappa happa, are way better than deathsmiles. all the games have more depth (because imo deathsmiles lacks it) and better gameplay all around. not that i dont like deathsmiles, because i do but it’s quite bland after playing either one of the 3 i mentioned.
im outi

Where? I looked at all the modes’ option screens and the title screen options and saw nothing pertaining to slowdown. Smoothing maybe, but nothing else
This is the first time I’ve ever heard people bitch because slow down was removed from a game. WTF people?
Because in CAVE games, the slowdowns are basically programmed into the game. These games were created on custom hardware, the devs would deliberately pump enough sprites onto the screen to slow it down in order to A: create the “holy fck" feeling, and B. Let you survive the "holy fck” moment when the screen is covered with thousands of tiny bullets with only a small little path of safety.
Go find yourself a copy of Progear and watch the last attack of the 2nd level boss - impossible if it wern’t for slowdown. (and I still feel like a god each time)
Another good example: Ibara on PS2. A lot of slowdown was removed from that game, especially apparent in the train stage if you’ve played the PCB (which I owned for a while). That stage is like 10x harder on the PS2 version due to the removal of slowdown.
Yeah, as nikkos said, slowdown in shmups isn’t the same as it is in other games. It’s actually to help you lol
