Yep, been playing it since Saturday. Not horrible, it’s a fun game, but definately dissapointing, considering how amazing V and IV were. The biggest problem is that the game is just too damn easy. The first you ship that’s available to you starts with all the weapons and craws by default, and you get them right back if you die. Couple that with the ability to set the lives to 9 from the onset, and I was able to beat it on the first try. Mind you, if you keep the lives at the default 3, the game is much tougher, and the first ship you unlock plays like a traditional TF game, forcing you to pick up new weapons and craws, and you lose them if you die.
The other problem is that the first 3 stages are very short.
Oh, and the last boss is lame.
TFV is my favorite shooter of all-time, and I had high hopes for VI, but it’s a letdown. Not that it’s a terrible game by any means, it’s a lot of fun, just not nearly as great as its prequels.
The only ones that come to mind are Gradius Galaxies, and the ever-addictive Space Invaders Extreme.
I am pretty much ok with everything Mr Mort said.
Actually if you unlock the Rynex, the gameplay become a bit more TF-like.
You need to pick up the weapons in the stages and you lose them if you get hit while using them.
However, the game becomes stupidely easy as the “over-weapon” of the standard shoot is waaaaay to powerful! you can kill almost all of the bosses in one shot without letting them attack.
Then if you clear the game with the Rynex (pretty easy) you can unlock another ship… and this one is even more broken as the “wave” over-weapon does the same job as the Rynex’s standard one.
I think it’s an OK game, but I am very disapointed… I was probably expecting too much from it.
Parodius collection, Sengoku Ace and Star Soldier would be my recommendations.
^^ My favorite of which would probably be Strikers 1945 II. My only gripe with this series is that in every game, once you select a ship, afterwards it will not let you change upon continuing. The only way to change ships is to exit out and start over completely with a new one.
I’ve been playing Ketsui. The scoring system is… demanding. The game’s fun, but I’m not sure if I like it just yet. A lot of shmups I can’t play because their scoring system is weird, and I still don’t understand this one.
Maybe I’ll trade it for Futari or something (actually, this was my original intention in the first place).
yeah Recca ain’t no joke. I’d enjoy it more if it were emulated better. That sprite flicker makes it harder than it needs to be. But damn is that one solid gameplay system with the charge up bomb/shield. Game is too good. I bought the soundtrack too.
Just got Castle Shikigami 2 a couple weeks ago(old, I know). I really suck at these games, so I doubt I will be finishing it before I unlock freeplay. The Engrish is hilarious at least.
I too suck at bullet hell games that are not DoDonPachi or rRootage it seems. DDP is alright since you are so bad ass from the start. and in rRootage you can see the hitbox so you know exactly where to not move your ship.
Before that rumor about Raiden: Fighter Aces coming to the US 360 popped up every time a new shmup got announced for the J360 I had the urge to import one. Now I just want someone to bring these kind of games over. If it can happen for Raiden, why not this? :wonder:
That stick looks amazing. If I didn’t have the SF4 TE stick on the way I’d consider ordering one.
Hey all, I’m a Shooter noob, just started playing last year, I use a ghetto vertical monitor setup of taking a flatscreen LCD display I got for a great price of 10000 yen and propping it up between the floor and my kotatsu. I’ve been trying to get a nice collection of games going as well. Living in Japan and having the chance to play at the arcades is sweet too.
I had a few questions for the board:
Have you guys played the Blue Wish series of freeware shooters? These are pretty fun Donpachi clones if you haven’t given it a shot, the only thing I don’t like about them is that there’s no 2 player mode.
What systems were Thunder Force IV and V released on?
Are new shooters still being released for the DC? If so what are some good stores in Akiba to pick them up at?
Here’s the link to the download page of the group that makes the games, you can get them all there if you can read a bit of Japanese. I’ve mostly played Blue Wish Resurrection Plus, it’s a good time for a free game.
Don’t worry dude. we all suck at these games, at the start. still, when you finally 1CC a hard one in front of your friends, they have no choice but to bow down when you jump up on the table and start beating your chest caveman style.
Like Furry curry mentioned, rRootage is like one of the best bullet hell trainers known. there are more on the main page but I can’t remember which ones are which. if you want to test yourself after that, go for End Effector. Shit’s like mad on hard level. NOT recommended for your little cousins, female members of the family, or any guy who wears an ascot.
