The Psikyo shooters and Giga Wing are nothing compared to Dodonpachi Daioujou.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shooter anywhere near as hard. I think “Daioujou” translates as “peaceful death.”
The bullet patterns are hell.

Every Extend is a unique arcade game. I’d personally call it a shooter in the loosest sense, as you’re basically blowing things up…except you’re not shooting. Yeah, that’s a great game. Everyone should play it. It’s fucking addictive though so watch out.
Yeah, if you don’t empty the gauge when using the Mosquito (bullet hold) in Mars Matrix you simply collect the bullets around you, then you can release the button and the bullets will fly out in the opposite direction in which you were holding the D-Pad / joystick. If you want to throw the bullets out in all directions, quickly rotate the pad / stick before you let go. Mars Matrix is crazy deep though - knowing when to kill enemies to keep your chain going in order to level up your ship is a lot harder than it sounds.
I’ll go on record as saying that Takumi (the people behind Giga Wing 1, 2, Generations, and Mars Matrix) are my favourite shmups developer. Giga Wing 2 is simply beautiful to look at, with an epic soundtrack as well. I just wish the game had more than 4 “real” stages - the last 3 are just boss fights. EvilRyuX, if you think 2 is hard, play the first one. IMHO it’s much more difficult and in some ways better than 2 - play stage 5 in score attack and you’ll be cursing up a storm.
I love the “reflect” mechanic of Takumi’s games though - it adds a nice extra element of strategy. Do you reflect to get out of a fast - moving bullet spread, or take the more difficult route and reflect on a more concentrated (but easier to avoid) attack to get a higher score? If only Giga Wing Generations wasn’t such a letdown…oh well.
Besides Giga Wing 1 I played Zero Gunner 2 earlier this week, which is also awesome. Always takes a couple of seconds to get used to the rotation controls when I first start playing, but they’re easy enough to pick up. Damn spider mini - boss on the orbital elevator stage though…
Oh yeah, I don’t think this site has been mentioned yet, but everyone should check out Shmups.com. Their strategy forums contain very in - depth scoring breakdowns and tips for countless old and new shooters, not unlike SRK’s forums
You’re the second person to recomend dodonpachi games. I guess it’s time to get myself shot again. if it’s on a system, let me know. if it’s arcade, I’m screwed since the only thing that even looks like an arcade around here is my computer.

Thanks for the tips on Mars Matrix. I already knew all of that except for the bullet in all directions thing.
I wish I could find Giga Wing 2’s soundtrack. Or at least just the last boss track, seriously.
Yes, Giga Wing Generations SUCKED.
Nice link too, thanks.
Now, I’ve just started ESP Ra De (on emu >_>) and have proceeded to get my ass kicked consecutively. Is there some beginner’s character or some tricks to help me not die so often?
hey. What’s ESP Ra De about? Sounds like my kind of game already. Oh yeah, if anyone wants to do any strats or such for a shooter, go for it. I’ll try to start putting some up myself when I get a chance.

I just picked up Shikigami No Shiro II aka Castle Shiki the other day for ps2 the other day. worthy to be in anybody’s shmups collection. Im trying to get past the fifth part now. im gonna collect every good shooter ever. These are my fav. shooters.
Hey. which system did the iron man/X-O game come out for? I might hunt it down. Einhander is one of my all-time faves too. Metal slug and the contra series just don’t stop no matter what IMO.

You fools. Not one person is talking about the latest ALL NEW shooter for the Xbox. Effing Xyanide. Someone go to their local game store and find a copy and buy it (it’s only $19.99).
I’ve been playing a lot of Battle Garegga lately. Managed to get to stage 6 on one credit.
that iron man game is on saturn/psx. Xyanide? hmm…ill check it out tomorrow. 19.99 you say…
okay. I finally got to play ESP Ra De. Thanks for putting out the word about it Darkstalker. even though I can’t get my faster computer to run it, it’s still good on the slower one. as soon as I get a games only computer, this shit will be ON!!! I almost feel badly for the neighbors…
…Yeah. right.

yo. just felt like updating this one with a little line up of what to expect when you go up against shooter games…
R.A.P.O.S.T. = Rotten Ass Piece Of Shit Tank!!! That one little enemy that seems to sneak in out of nowhere to fire that ONE random bullet that gets you when you just finished dodging a ton of other junk and your guard is down. I HATE that shit.
The Swarm = they are…well, the swarm. the obligatory big group of little enemies that fly in and throws a ton of shots at you. sometimes they just go suicide on you and try to ram you straight out.
Kamikaze Killer = the name says it all. that enemy that throws the guns on the floor and caution to the wind and uses itself as the weapon to kill you. usually, this enemy is fast and highly manuverable as well as being rather large.
…And don’t forget, determined to bring you down with them. learn the pattern or end up as some bad guy’s bumper sticker.
The house buster = usually the weapon used by the boss. that rediculously huge weapon that when fired, releases a shot that takes up around half the screen (if not more), and usually fires so fast that if you don’t know where and when it’s going to fire, you’re more than likely gonna get hit. Fortunately, this usually doesn’t show up until later in most games. learning when and where it will fire renders it pretty much useless against anyone who is awake.
the magic bullet = I hate this one. it’s that shot that dissappears, but it’s still able to hit you. Fortunately, it’s just a glitch in the game and isn’t something that was meant to happen.
…Yeah, I know. SOMEtimes, it IS a bullet that you just happen to miss and it leaves you saying,“what happened?” Unfortunately, no matter what happened, you still get shot.

All horizontal superplays. especially Radiant Silvergun. enjoy. but you might wanna search for it though its not just there this is just a link to the database search. oh yea the Strikers has some good superplays. I want to make a superplay of Super Double Dragon even though its not a shooter. o well
You’re forgetting one…the delayed homing laser. It comes at you at full speed, then it slows down, then it comes at you at full speed again. You usually have to dodge these twice before they leave the screen. You’ll see this in most Taito shmups where the bosses love to spam these at you.
Best Thread Ever
fuck. I knew I was forgetting something. I knew I could count on the other fans to show me the light though.
WARNING: don’t write stuff like this while you’re hitting hard brew. it’s a good way to get yourself shot.
-Starhammer-
if I had made a thread about butt-naked digital booty, that would probably be the best thread ever. me? I don’t care about fame. I just want to spread the word. and that word is…
EVERYBODY GET’S SHOT!!!
-Starhammer-
Yeah, I just bought Gradius V the other day. It’s pretty amazing.
I can’t seem to get into Gradius. I always start playing then I’ll stop. I’ll probably pick up the PSP collection though.
So when you guys are playing shooters do you prefer arcade sticks to pads? I feel like I manuver better with a pad but having access to all the buttons with my finger tips makes things easier.
