Those costumes get on my damn nerves. I’m just as thirsty as anyone, but a lot of those costumes just feel so low effort. Like there is literally no goal besides showing as much skin as possible and people eat it up.
Like to me “real dress game”>bra/panties/lingerie type shit. You can be sexy, and a lot of times even sexier, without showing literally as much skin as possible.
Does that make sense?

Nah I agree. It’s the lowest effort a game can do to generate interest. That being said, I wouldn’t mind as much if the guys would get costumes like that as well.
I don’t expect someone like FANG or G to get a swimsuit (though it would be nice), but I do wish they would make costumes like that for Alex and Vega. That’s just a missed opportunity.

I think that swimsuits are ok when the other outfits offer a good variety.
The problem is, there is not much variety or creativity on the outfits, and the swimsuits are kind of lame in some cases.
Like they want them to be both fanservice but as covered as possible, so you have them having weird shit tacked to them, like Falke, Kolin for example.
Add the weird shitty proportions and all of them end looking off.

Yeah Falke default is the biggest offender for “costume altered because of gratuitous thirst”. Having the lower part of her costume open with exposed panties just looks stupid

I have this pit in my stomach that FGs are entering their second dark age, and that there isn’t a SFIV that’s going to put it out of it.
it seems like every major FG released in the last 2 years hasn’t been able to maintain a sizable player base for more than 6 or 8 months
Sakura has one of the better swimsuit costumes.
The problem isnt even the fan service, since we have other chars that also do it, like Cammy.
The problem is that the design is poorly done.
The combination of military trenchcoat, high heel boots that are thigh high should be a winner, but they managed to make it look tacky with the color scheme, overall design with the angular shoulders, the way that the forms flow and the character is associated with.
The look supposedly screams femme fatale, but the personality, lore/story and moveset clash with the look they wanted to go
Also, just a reminder, i am on the side that i actually welcome “thirst” designs as you put it.
So, i in essence disagree with the notion of less is more by principle, lol.
But i agree that it cant be the only thing present unless you are aiming for a full fan service game like Senran Kagura or Kandogawa Jet Girls (which actually put more effort on their fan service if you ask me)
It’s just the covid shutting things down man. Soul Calibur, DBFZ, and BBTAG came out in 2018 and they’re still doing alright DBFZ especially so. MK11 came out last year and even though its suffered the usual NRS dwindling numbers you can hop on and play people without needing to find a discord illuminati group or whatever. Fighcade is also doing good as always.
Samsho, UNI, FEXL, Granblue and DOA6 are the ones that died or got a severe cut in numbers and of those only DOA6 and FEXL were really doomed without COVID.
Things feel bad but I think fighting games are big enough these days that you dont have to worry about no dark age lol

That game has always many of its public lobbies full at all hours.
Hell, GBFVS and BBTAG also have many of their public lobbies full at every hour and those games have less sales than DBFZ.
For starters, there were never dark ages (i seriously hate that stupid notion, since is dismissive of the communities that have been playing those games for years and are the reason why the scene exists now).
FGS have been consistently played by multiple scenes through the years.
Hell, even with this pandemic we have games that are “dead” as some of you foolishly put it being consistently played having different forms of online gatherigns/tournaments across the world, like some of the Samsho Londo tournaments, or the Cannadian online BBTAG tournaments that happen weekly
And even local tournaments in some places.
FGS are niche by nature, so is common for them to lose part of their player base with time, it happened on when SFIV launched the same way it happened now, and is usually in the same ratio.
Add that with the pandemic, not having local and big tournaments can seem like not much is happening when you are not paying attention, like in the “dark times” where people had plenty of tournaments but since people werent able to see it as easy as now via youtube/twitch/etc think fgs were dead.
