Some of you really need to realize how much of a tier-whore character Chun Li traditionally is. SFIV is one of her worse outings since getting a fireball, because she has some weird missing tools. But she ran A2 and most of the Vs. series as well as 3rd Strike, and was absolutely nothing to sneeze at in Super Turbo. Really, if she just didn’t lose so hard from trading on anti-air attempts (health+having to use forward against fierce and roundhouse), and obviously, get screwed over by deep wake-up jump ins she’d already be clearly top tier in SFIV, and she’s one of the characters that dicks over most of the console cast and low tiers as it is. With Kikosho landing at the drop of a hat, something’s probably going to give, but it wouldn’t even be unusual if it didn’t, and most of it ultimately won’t matter unless they chop like 10" off of all her active hitboxes.
This isn’t Cammy or Fei Long you’re dealing with here.
I agree! I don’t want Chun to be tier whored. I like it that people compliment my Chun and say things like " I just can’t use her. Props 2 u"
But if she gains an easy to land ultra…I fear for her ease of use. I don’t want her to become a Ryu.
The only buff she should get is her health imo, that’d help her with trading hits from the other top tiers. Everything else is perfect as is. I hope Kikosho is easy to land but does low low damage.
Too late. If she can connect her kikosho in as many ways as she can “connect” her current ultra, then I think she pretty much is going to be another Ryu… no FADC required (but still possible if you want to be fancy with it.)
Oh well…it’ll make things less stressful vs the most used characters like Ryu and Sagat. When I fight these guys I honestly DO feel like Chun has a handicap in the match…
I feel the same…well they’re still balancing the game, I hope they know what they’re doing and don’t ruin the way she plays cause right know I think she’s one of the most fun to use characters.
Maybe having to fadc after ex legs would be a good soloution
Yes! FADC to connect Ultra would be nice, something different than corner juggling and not too braindead like Ryu-to-ultra. The more uses for FA the better imo. Why do Kens have all the fun?
I don’t know but I was hoping this topic would come up. Im really hoping they either change her armor breaker to the hassen shu or allow the SBK to hit on start up because the fact that there is a long start up time on the SBK makes it worthless as a pressure attack againts opponents who try to bait chun li’s. She’s like the only character that you can’t really pressure with armor breaker attacks, everyone has a good and direct armor breaker attack but her.
You can’t use it on reaction like Tatsu or Tiger Knee because the start up is so slow and she is so vunerable on start up and finish. I don’t like wasting EX just because it’s the most useful, especially if you wiff it.
If nothing else the SBK needs to hit lower so it hits blockers better and push her back to keep her from being countered so easily. Make the SBK faster on start up for medium and Hard Kick versions as well. Chun li needs these major upgrades because after looking at the 3S characters she’s gonna have a hard time because unlike Chun Li many of the 3S characters have retained their 3S presence.
Sorry for the long windedness, I was just thinking about posting about SBK but wanted someone to mention it first.
^^^^throw more as a solution as a focus fisher more than likely wont be prepared for dash up throw. just one of the ways charge characters are at a disadvantage in the current system. you get good normals and shit, but as a trade-off all charge characters except rog need a charge for armor break
throwing focus fishers only works somewhat ok in medium level circles, i can only throw intermediate players out of abused focus attempts.
against everyone else its just wait and let them back themselves into a corner eventually cause of needing to backdash when no absorb has occurred, or throw a well spaced medium kikoken or let them absorb a st.mp into a backdash. so that maybe i can later hit them with a poke and get some of that juicy gray damage we are all so fond of hitting our opponents out of. but seriously focus almost totally destroys chuns game when the opponent knows the matchup, and knows just when to abuse them.
good luck against a ryu or akuma that focus fishes all day, they have the get out of jail free air hurricane to fall back on.
skatans focus breaker is theory fighter to everyone but him as i have NEVER seen it done by anybody but him.
Spinning Bird Kick needs startup invincibility and better travel speed. It’s a pretty pointless obligatory throwback as it is, may as well just give her reversal only Tenshokyaku like X-ism for most of its usefulness. But if it gets a few frames of invulnerability as she gets off the ground again? Then it actually does some neat stuff, although in SFIV it would be potential option select bait like EX Messiah. Still, something like Akuma cross-up tatsu to sweep? You could actually get out of that. You’d need it sped up to avoid just getting swept on landing unless you could get it out in time to go the “wrong” direction though, and as is it doesn’t combo into itself properly because the pushback is more than her forward movement half the time.
Based on what I heard from the last dev blog we got translated about IBuki it seems when they transfered all the moves of a specific old character like Chun Li, they replicate the moves as best as possible then tweek it later. but if I remember correctly Chun Li was a special case. Design wise she was difficult to get right which lead to a lot of problems, im sure part of these problems (at least one of them) was how her attacks would work. She was actually set aside at the end of development (And even given a special day) so the entire dev team could work on her. This is probaly why she and others like Guile and Vega seems so gimped compared to other iterations. I mean what the heck did they think d/f lk was gonna be used for? It’s like they started work on the move and then forgot about it. Ono said many of the dev teams were working on character balances before they knew a SSFIV would go green, I hope Chun Li was part of those experiments. I don’t count CES because it was way too early and was a promo demo.
As an ST player I would point out that SBK was never really that useful. It could avoid wakeups and fireballs due to the invincibility and was used over the upkicks in certain circumstances but it was never really even close to being good. At least now it can be used to combo.
Of course you don’t have upkicks now. I wonder if that will be put in SSF4…
One SBK can be used in one combo. Ignoring the EX version, which once again, pretty much sits in for Tenshokyaku, that’s patently less useful than the ST version, considering that one combo is only a semi-useful stun builder that’s pretty much obsoleted by fierce xx legs, sweep. Even just air SBK corner meter building is a step up.
Something that sneaks out of a few nasty knockdown mixups (like Gen EX wall dive or Guacamole) without actually leading to much of anything (like an SRK) is pretty much the kind of minor tweak she could use to help her out of a few abusable situations without making a huge overall difference. Even Viper has a non-EX move with some invulnerability, stuffable as it is, and Bison has a freaking teleport now.
Hmm well no one here technically is complaining or whining as you describe that she is getting better but just reiterating the fact that there is limited test info on Chun Li and as we see new characters coming into the fray, if chun hasn’t changed drastically enough, she could fall really far below the ranks. Technically there is not enough information to varify what makes her better or worst anyways, the videos only tell so much and any information gathered is here say and hardley confirmation of truth. Seth K states over and over that the Kikiosho changes her game entirly but if we all have to lean towards a new ultra just to do better with Chun and nothing else is fixed, then it’s a pretty limited upgrade IMHO.
So no im not complaining really, I dont’ think anyone here who has given their 2 cents is neither, we are just big Chun fans, just anxious to see what the changes are. 2 months seems a long way. But of course if Guy is as good as I expect him to be, I may make a trade. You can keep Ibuki though, sorry.
I like that Chun is gettting better, as IMO she needed more health and more anti air on EX SBK in SF4. However, I liked that she was not as common as Ryu and other top tiers due to her quirks and difficulties in play. If they make her as solid as Ryu… I wouldn’t like it so much.
Not that I WOULDN’T like it. heh! I just like that she is less accessiable than the other top tiers. Is this selfish? lol…
Chun won’t ever become another Ryu, I mean we’re talking about a game with lenient inputs and a huge reversal window here, something that doesn’t seem like it will change in SSF4, and last time I checked Chun didn’t have a DP she can mash.
Her piano inputs, low damage output, and highly situational AAs are all more than enough to drive newcomers away from her until they’ve gotten some of the basics down playing as an easier character like a shoto or Balrog.
