-If you go the route of U1, realize you’ll be completely free on wakeup. Something you don’t want against Gief.
-Gief doesn’t have to jump on you but if he does, you need to throw out cr.Fierce a bit early or else you’ll be trading.
-Don’t bother with projectiles too much. Especially Strong/Fierce sparks. You’re just asking for green hand and gief to close in on you.
-If Gief decides to do lariats when a LP spark’s coming, punish him with a properly spaced s.Fierce
Obvious stuff like no crossing up (or jumping really) since Punch Lariat stops all that. Don’t be braindead pushing buttons. make sure if you’re doing something like s.Fierce or s.Roundhouse, you’re either far enough gief can’t grab on reaction or you’re doing it to punish him for something. This is one of the matches where properly spaced slides save your ass from reaching corner lockdown. If you ever get a throw off, take full advantage of it and reposition yourself to get some distance if you need to.
EDIT: I wouldn’t bother using EX Throw to escape Gief shenanigans. I dunno if Gief has and OS but i’d assume he can with jd.FP and Punch Lariat. (or replace body splash with knee drop.) You’ll just be wasting meter when you’d be better off just blocking. If you just had to use something to escape, EX spiral is better. But not better than just blocking. (but again, I have no idea if Gief has and Option Selects with either Lariat or EX Green Hand.)
i was just thinking against balrog’s EX uppercut rush: would it be possible to buffer/OS a cr.mk xx spiral where if he blocked the cr.mk you wouldnt get the spiral, but if he did the ex upper the cr.mk would absorb the armor and the spiral would come out? EX armor isnt something im incredibly familiar with the properties of. Is it like a whiff or a block or neither?
Im pretty decent against balrog. Its not an easy match, but its not my worst either. I catch a lot of ex uppers with cr.mk though but never have the reactions to cancel into spiral and it always just ends in resetting the both of us back into a footsie war.
when they do it on wake up, i would immediately do a throw after the cr.mk, for the most part i do cr.mk>cr.mp>spiral regardless of whether they block or ex upper. dont understand why for the most part balrogs cant just stay still when i go for a cross up, they either ex upper or headbutt which is just dumb, i dont know whether im OS a cr.HK or not after i do a cross up j.mk, i just do it on reaction and they usually get knocked down. you can substitute a spiral too if you please.
Rose should not be throwing out too many Soul Sparks, and do more of reflecting his Sonic Booms right back at him. This will prevent or make it difficult for him to approach you up-close and pressuring you. If you are trying to approach Guile, try doing so by reflecting his projectiles, and then walking/sliding forward. Once you are within range, try baiting out his Flash Kicks, and punish. If you are able to score a knockdown, go for cross-ups. Guile has a horrible time dealing with cross-ups, as his Flash Kick does not auto-correct on those. If you are attempting to go for Soul Spiral, be really careful if they are blocked, as Guile can easily punish those with his Flash Kicks.
EX armor works like focus in the sense that when it absorbs a hit, it causes hitstop (hitpause). When an attack is blocked, it also causes hitstop.
The only way an OS like that would be possible is if ex armor absorbing a cr.mk causes more hitstop than a blocked cr.mk, and that I’m not too sure about.
Rose can play the fireball war. Just be sure to mix it up with LP and MP reflect to make Guile guessing even more. You’ll be gaining meter like crazy either way though.
I honestly wouldn’t bother with drills in this matchup unless you hitconfirm into it or have meter to FADC out if it’s blocked (which you should considering you’ll be doing a lot of sparks/reflects) This is a match I personally say Rose should lame out for the hell of it since she can be even more lame than Guile. Push him into the corner and keep his ass there.
She can definitely play the projectile war, especially since she gains meter quicker than Guile can. Generally, I think you’ll find yourself reflecting or absorbing more to get the winning advantage. I’m not too sure if Rose’s projectile has a quicker start-up time, or Guile’s. You could lame it out in this match-up and find yourself in a winning position, but if you’re willing to approach and try to pressure, be careful as to which pokes you throw out. Generally when I play against Guile up-close, I just try to bait moves out and punish. As Shin Oni said, always keep your opponent guessing.
I usually stick with LP spark (since it’s enough) but if Guile doesn’t have meter and, I sometimes throw out MP/HP spark just to continue throwing off opponents. Only time I bother getting in close is when I have Guile backed into a corner. At that point, Guile has can’t be too Boom happy or he’ll eat a reflect boom. Score a knockdown in the corner and you really have Guile being even more cautious on their next move. If he tries to jump out, cr.HP beats everything Guile sticks out or at least trades at minimum. (at least last I checked it did).
This kinda goes however you want really. Lame it out with a fireball/reflect war, pressure Guile into corners, or both.
Thanks guys. Can you suggest specific normals to keep him out of range to force him to projectile? For instance if he lands an ex boom and walks forward to close space etc.
I try and keep it fresh as possible with slides, mk, and hk to create a decent distance to get him out of poke range. Any ideas on punishing his C.HK on reaction or after block?
Most Guiles are going to projectile unless they’re trying to regain the lead or just playing like ST Guile or something. I usually go with st.Fierce, st.strong, cr.strong as good starts for keepaway. you can Focus the first and backdash if you see cr.roundhouse or just block the first sweep and focus the second hit. You can also get cr.MP into drill if you don’t want lvl 2 focus after the first whiffed or blocked sweep. As for EX Booms, I usually don’t bother wasting meter to reflect them and just jump over them since they’re pretty fast and want to save meter for better spent things. Just pay attention to their meter and don’t be afraid to jump some booms if you’re either expecting or trying to bait out EX.
It’s true, you cant do spirals as much as you would like too. Guile is a good matchup to learn your spiral spacing as he punishes bad ones easily and pretty hard. One thing I find annoying about him is that there seems to be a slight difference in his hitbox when you try to cross up. usually after a drill I crossup and it seems to whiff on him all the time, getting me hurt badly because I dont expect it too. He is smaller when crouching or getting up, I guess.
I think Rose can win this match by relying on reflect as a strategy, but I’m not that consistent with reflecting fast booms mixed with slow ones. Still a hard matchup for me, especially when they air throw on point and force me to come in on the ground. Played some smart ones who would flash-kick everything I triied on the ground, just by guessing, I guess. There is a flashkick spacing that makes Guile actually pretty safe against most counters on block.
It’s easier to reflect sonic booms if you are closer to Guile (half screen or less), because you can reflect all versions with the same timing. If you try to reflect from full screen on the other hand, you have to recognize the boom speed and adjust accordingly.
what about the match vs Dhalsim? i’m really having some problems vs him…cant pressure well, don’t even know why. Maybe could be the online lag…or it’s just me
ah, you too? Haha. I play another Dhalsim once in a while and have the exact same issues. Being patient gets me nothing, just wears me down. At high levels they do great damage once they are in but my output is too low when I get a chance so I’m too much struck down with getting back in again.
The slide to throw thing are shenanigans though. I Need to learn to counter that to win the close-battle game more often.
