Sucks to live in period of worldwide democratic backsliding I guess.
Greater political polarization has only led each group on each side to become less tolerant of hearing anything that sounds like something coming from the other side, and this combined with the rise of new social medias wrecking shit in how communication and speech used to work in the pre and early internet periods only caused more of a mess.
That’s why I’m hoping that with Trump we had a peak in this kind of political climate, and that without him things can start to go back toward something more normal.
I don’t know if the situation is bad enough that I would call it “drastically” less freedom though. It could just be that you being a kid in the '90s (like me) didn’t allow you to notice a lot of stuff and a lot of arguments that have always existed but you didn’t notice because kids have other things to think about.
This irrelevant retard still brings up this retarded point when Trump almost went to war against Iran in January 2020 when he killed an Iranian general out of the blue, and only Corona stopped him from going on with it.
Speech in the US isn’t any less free now than it was in the 90s. You can say that the US should be Communist, or Fascist, or just overthrown. You can spout all types of sensible or stupid things, and no one is going to throw you in jail or just murk you for it.
Only real difference now is that if you’re being a big enough asshole then the public isn’t going to just stay silent and put up with it. That’s not the absence of free speech, that’s it in abundance.
Yes the US is the only country that is not going to throw you in jail for hate speech or blasphemy but the US is unique in that regard. Every other countries have laws against hate speech and incitement of hatred.
And I was talking societal values and also academic freedom, the US ranks below Norway when it comes freedom of speech overall. It’s not even in the top 10.
