The Political Thread 2021

I had to read it 4 times to see if I understood it correctly.

I’m with Chad. This impeachment doesn’t really hurt Trump. It’s just more reason for his base to dig in their heels and push back harder.

They already believe that he had the election stolen, now they’re removing him from office. I feel like a full on investigation and trial after he’s left office would do more good.

You don’t need to impeach him to do that.

It wouldn’t tho:

The impeachment itself doesn’t but it opens him to trial in the Senate where he can be barred from holding office. It’s step 1 of a multi step process.

Uh what do you consider being impeached really is?
Either way the base is gonna get riled up for the same reason

Is there anything at this point that will not make his insanely radicalized base not dig their heels and push back? They already assaulted the Capitol, Trump’s base is well past the point of no return and they’re steadily directed toward becoming self-disenfranchised lunatics at best or domestic terrorists at worse.
These are people that think Mitch McConnell is too much to the left for them and part of Chinese Communist conspiracy, how are you gonna stop from screaming Communism at anything short of a Trump autocracy?

When the heart of your democratic legislative system is physically attacked in that manner it’s the time to stop any pretense of calming things down and the political system should instead take the harshest, most direct and most loud stance possible (which is the impeachment in this case) to make it clear that Democracy itself is at stake and you can’t tolerate anymore.
If they don’t do that the message that will pass through is that casually assaulting parliament is now a part of American politics, and after a month of cowering you will see hordes of MAGAtards attacking state capitols, possibly with weapons, and will also escalate their attacks on politicians, both Democrats and Republicans that aren’t completely subservient to the mob.

There was this video earlier of a Democrat senator being harassed at an airport by a MAGAmob in a very aggressive way, and the whole time I was thinking that it would have been terribly easy for anyone of them to take out a gun and shoot the guy in the head if they wanted. These are people that have been so thoroughly radicalized that they see their political enemies as uniformly evil and borderline inhuman, if a very harsh stance isn’t enforced it’s only a matter of time before they start seeing targeted assassinations as legitimized against what they perceive as a dictatorship.

Good point.

I dunno man, I just don’t want my family and friends getting hurt or killed over this shit. I’m legit worried that my Mother-in-law is going to be swept up into something dumb and end up in prison.

I know I don’t want Trump getting the perks of the presidency after he leaves, and impeachment will do that.

It’s all fucked and it sucks. His base is seriously scaring me, and weirdly thankful for COVID right now, because of the simmering panic going on right now, I wouldn’t be surprised that a few “lone wolfs” wouldn’t be inspired to finally go out and shoot some people.

Edit: thankful for lockdowns, not the actual disease. Fuck COVID

While I agree that impeachment will make a martyr out of trump to his most dedicated base, it is needed to excise him from the party and they know they probably won’t get another chance. Look at how slimy Republicans who backed trump have been, Lindsey Graham is already back to defending the president. If you let the events of last Wednesday get further away, the snakes will find more excuses to oppose action against trump. Impeaching him will cause problems and may even lead to violence down the line, but this is the only chance they have to remove this tumor and everyone knows it. It’s gotta be done man.

Ok, I’m seeing the benefits of impeachment.

Sorry, the last week has me kinda rattled. Like, legit scared.

My take is if you let this slide it only sets the bar higher for the next guy.

Higher than inciting a riot on your own congress where 5 people died.

I will say this,

Impeachment would strip Trump of his presidential pension, travel allowance, secret service detail, all other perks that comes from tax payer money as well as opening the senate to vote that Trump can’t hold any office again

I mean…far right Republicans didn’t let a black man winning the presidency in 2008 slide.

Look at the epilogue.

Are you talking about the right, or the left? Because that description could fit either at this point :joy:

Once Again, Republicans Are Saying Nazis Are The Same As Anti-Fascists (msn.com)

When a Republican leader starts to quote Dr. Martin Luther King out of context, you just know you’re about to hear something that is, at best, vague and void of any responsibility.

Republicans love to blame “both sides,” as if fascism and anti-fascism are just two extreme entities instead of, you know, an immediate threat to our lives and a necessary response to that threat.

Like just about everything else, the “two sides” argument is one often used (if not started) by Trump himself. During the 2017 neo-Nazi riot in Charlottesville, which erupted into violence and left one woman dead, he famously said that “many sides” should be held responsible. “What about the ‘alt-left’ that came charging at, as you say, the alt-right,’ do they have any semblance of guilt?” he asked. “You had a group on one side that was very bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say it, but I will say it right now.”

goes on about Trump’s current tactic of baseless election fraud claims to sow further division.

Nobody in their right mind wants this.

Food for thought. We let Trump do his thing for 4 years and now 5 people are dead.

You really wanna let him keep on keepin on?
