The "Official" Street Fighter 4 PC Thread (read first post)

any new about someone modding the sf4s netcode yet? My prediction about my online experience came true and now i can barely play, i have about 5 people in my range (4 or 5 bars), its a bit depressing after such a wait for the game.

wtf is the deal with this? I get the same thing but it usually jumps between 3 and 5. it never happens on the 360 version (I have see a 1 bar jump a few times). surely its a bug?

I thought I could play this version while I’m waiting for my xbox to be repaired but I’m about ready to give up after rage quitting every time I play. I have frame rate set to fixed and my FPS shows a constant 60 but most of the matches I play have extreme lag even on 5 bars (but I guess its not a true 5 bar connection since it jumps around).

sorry if this was a dumb post but I guess I needed to vent after giving up and losing a ranked match against a runaway akuma who played in slow motion on a 5 bar connection.

Those of you that purchased the PC version & own a console version:

Are there more than 3 results when searching for players?
Is the connection bars still erratic? ex. 4-5 bar matches lags for unknown reason
Can you actually find someone to play with in any Mode?

-thx

Assuming you’re talking about PC mode: As far as I can tell there are two forms of lag.

First, there’s normal network latency lag where gameplay feels squishy – that is, nothing is as responsive as it should be. This is normal for low-quality connections (1-2 bar) and common on 3-bar connections.

Then, there’s actually gameplay slowdown. This is because Capcom, in their infinite wisdom, made two choices for the PC: First, they offered “variable” framerate, which really just means “draw every frame no matter what”. This is a funny way of putting it because it’s actually quite different from how other computer games consider frames per second in that it’ll slow down the actual game engine so that the rendering engine can catch up. This causes an actual slowdown. Their second mistake was to default the setting to variable rather than fixed and make “variable” override the settings. Thus, people who have the video settings set too high for their computer to handle end up lagging down games.

SF4 PC Version

Pros:
-Looks great in high resolution (of course this depends on your hardware)
-Loads faster than Xbox 360
-Nice GFWL UI - Typing messages is so much easier than Xbox.

Cons:
-Online play is inconsistent
-Bar indicators never displays an accurate indication of the quality of connection between you and opponent. In other words 4 bars can really mean 1 or 2 bars. Just imagine starting the match thinking it’s a great connection but it’s really 1 or 2 bars. This goes the other way around as well. You connect to a 1 bar match but it will feel lagless.
-Capcom not defaulting to “FIXED” framerate ruins a lot of matches. I finally connected to a 5 bar opponent only to end up playing in slow motion. Not a great experience hehe.
-Small number of players in my experience but this can also depend on time of day.

SF4 PC is great off line but I have to give it low grades when it comes to the online experience. It’s too bad because I wanted this to be really good on the PC but the game is just to inconsistent online. I’m back to the reliable xbox live.

Hasn’t it always been three? I could have sworn that, at one point, I saw maybe five or seven panels.

The connectivity bars aren’t “erratic”, but they don’t really stay at one point. That’s just the way Capcom has it’s thing set.

I can definitely find people. If you do the arcade requests, you’ll be getting challengers constantly.

It depends on what you chose.
If you chose championship and you are in G1 then you don’t get so many challenges… :wgrin:

The stupid bar system is just their way of measuring the ping time. Ping times are not always consistent. That’s why you can see low bar games ending up being playable or vice versa. This is true for ALL online gaming.

As ZeroSumHappiness pointed out, that’s only for the lantency issue, which should be the only thing that affects online play, but you know, variable option and all.

so why do I never see 3 bars jump to 5 bars on the console version but I always see it on PC?

Because you didn’t see that happen on console…

Ok yeah i over reacted, maybe not most of the people have 4gb and quadcore, it was more like, 2gb ram and dual cores…

Sorry but i just get frustrated by all these post saying that they can’t run the game at 60 frames and ask on the forums for a God Send answer to run SF4 all high with a wooden pc.

Is anyone participating on this tournament?

You guys should get in!

I’m having a lot of trouble with my 360 SE stick I bought for SF4. I’m running Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro. The problem is intermittent buttons. Sometimes Fierce Punch doesn’t work, sometimes Roundhouse, sometimes Forward. I would think it was the crappy buttons on the SE, but sometimes they work great and sometimes not. Has anyone experienced this?

I also bought a PS3 version of the stick, but I can’t get that working at all.

I ended up replacing the buttons in my SE with Sanwa buttons, which removed any intermittent button pressing problems that I had before. The buttons aren’t too expensive, but I did replace the stick too which was more expensive. I think I ended up paying like 2-3$/button after shipping and everything.

You could try this: Link

Also, wongerhere if you don’t have an Intel chipset it probably won’t work in which case you might need to get another usb card: Link

I don’t really noticed any lag on an SE stick, there is input delay in a laggy match, but in training mode I’ve never noticed a delay.

game is almost dead, you almost can’t find any player/ranked/champion matches.
after 1 month thats a bit sad…

??? really ? I see a lot of people everyday :lovin:

It’s not that bad, I rarely have trouble finding matches. Sometimes all the available hosts have only 2-bar connections, but then I just host my own and usually get a challenge before too long.

Yeah,we in europe don’t have any problems with our SFIV. It’s like Japan. Everyone is rather pretty near to each other(France,UK,Germany,Italy) and almost everyone has a great network (10 mb minimum). That’s why there is no arcade scene in here lol

Big data rate =/= good connection.
