The "Official" Street Fighter 4 PC Thread (read first post)

You’ll always get tearing of the screen in any game that runs above 60fps with Vsync OFF. In fps games having Vsync ON tends to have side-effects of mouse lag, but in SF4 I feel no input lag so I have it locked at 60fps with Vsync ON. Without vsync I get around 100-120fps but it feels the same at 60fps plus the horrible tearing I can’t stand.

Why don’t use use Vsync? O.o

Anyway to save replays onto my harddrive from my saves ingame?

Thanks

Because when I use Vsync, there are moments in gameplay when my FPS literally drops from 59 to like 30 or even 20 if there’s a lot of crap going on. This is the most apparent in stages like Crowded Downtown, Cruise Ship Stern, and both the Jungle stages where there are a ton of things in the background along with all the flashy stuff that happens between the two characters when you fight. Every single impact I do is followed by a brief, but huge slowdown with Vsync on. It’s not input lag so much as it is the game literally slowing down, which sometimes messes up my timing.

I have a bit of trouble against claw and blanka but I know their game now, so I don’t really fret over it anymore. I just get stuck with alot of sagat’s who just mash out Tiger uppercut the momment you get close, haha. Playing ken is just one big challenge trial, lawl.

The best way to solve your tearing issue would be to turn down some settings so that you can use v-sync without that slowdown, really. Try setting your particles to Medium and see how your Ultras look with v-sync on.

Also, guys, human eyes can see well over 300 FPS. Have you been to BestBuy lately? They’ll showcase different HDTVs with a movie playing, like Madagascar. There is a giant difference between the 60 hz HDTVs and the 120 ones.

Movies are able to run at 23-24 FPS because of motion blurs. If you were to take a high speed, 1000 FPS camera (which will get minimal blurring) and trim the frames down to 24~ FPS, you will be able to tell immediately. Depending on the person, it might even hurt your eyes.

Typically, you don’t want more than 60 FPS because that’s all most monitors can render. Some models can go higher, and while it isn’t necessary, you will be able to tell the difference between even 75 and 80 FPS.

Perhaps I will turn down some of the settings to see if it runs better with Vsync on. I just don’t want to sacrifice too much of the quality which I have right now. But that being said, which settings (Other than AA) take up the most resources in the game when set on high? You mentioned particles so I’ll try to tone that one down. Any other ones?

Get a better computer.
My friend had the same frame drops from 60 to 30 randomly, but it’s because he’s making it up with 1gb ram, and integrated video card from a Laptop. all those framedrops issues etc… are because ur computer sucks, nowdays everyone has 4gb ram and quadcores.

i really like the idea before joining or declining match ups that you get to see the other person’s benchmark grade

I’d like to know what everyones benchmark grade is just to compare and see whats average

I wish ranked matches had blind select.

That or I wish you could see people’s character usage stats before joining their matches or in the lobby.

That’s a baseless assumption, so uh… No.

Anyway, here’s what the final thing for me is.

I’ve managed to tweak the graphical settings a bit and tone down most of the stuff that do no impact the visuals all that much, all the while turning on Vsync.

The end result is, gameplay (Both single player and online) runs nice and smooth at around 59-60 FPS. On crowded stages and graphically intensive stages like “Drive-In at Night” or Seth’s lab stage, there are certain special moves or events (E.g. Hit trades) where it MIGHT go down to around 57-58 FPS, but it’s hardly noticeable.

The most prominent signs of slow-down appears during Ultra sequences where the frames might temporarily drop to around 30 FPS and then instantly jump back to the high 50s. This usually happens whenever there’s a quick, drastic change in camera positioning. Fortunately, since you can’t control your characters during those sequences anyway, this isn’t too much of a problem.

All in all, I think I’m pretty happy with the results now, so I’ll keep Vsync on and see how it goes in the long run. Thanks to everyone who chipped in on helping! =D

Haha, I have to say thanks as well. I only got my notbook with me here and up until now I had everything switched to minimum and even then got drops to around 30fps on the more crowded levels. It somehow never occured to me to check whether I had vsync enabled. Until I’ve read this page, that is. Turns out it was on - I switched it off and can now play with a constant 60fps on any level with settings on medium. Thanks!

Most of the people I know have 2gigs/dou so yeah…

I’m running on 2gigs/2.2ghz dou/8600GT and have it on kinda high and it runs at 60fps easily.

I was about to say the same thing about getting some hardware upgrades
If I knew I’d be playing SF4 on PC and my system is lacking for that I’d bling out the cash now and not sacrifice anything in my game, you will upgrade your PC eventually - what better reason you want than SF4?

I got a guy with a 5 bar connection who lagged like hell today, and a guy with a 1 bar who barely lagged at all

Interesting.

Why is that? Wow i had v-synch on this whole time…took it off and ran the benchmark tool…stupid fast at 200+ frames per second, didnt seem to effect practice mode much though, must only be that bad in the benchmark tool

Alright attention to anyone that is anyone that is playing on PC, send me an invite before I uninstall this POS. I am tired of playing 1-2 bar’d people in Championship and seeing the rooms all filled with people with actual good connections. Hit me up if you want some matches, please, this is coming from someone depraved of decent competition. I have played a few people from SRK randomly but same problem, I want to play more of you so please bring it.

Also, this is probably the best SF4 related suggestion I have ever read, plz make it happen Capcom.

i just upgraded from a 1 mbit shitty cellular wireless connection to 15 mbits and somehow shit is worse when looking for a match. 1 bars across the board, only 2-3 players on the custom game list. not running through a router. any tips?

I always set all search parameters to ANY, and language to English.

“Stability” goes through every goddamn search and just tosses anything under 4 bars. I can join a game with 2 bars ping and it’ll magically jump to 4 or 5 bars and play wonderfully.

Join 2 bar and 3 bar games, if the ping doesn’t go any higher than 2, drop and try another lobby.

I haven’t played online yet, but I get the feeling that the fps display can be deceiving. Since some critical aspects of the game run down to the frame, coupled with input lag, even if you get the game engine and graphics running at 60fps, your gameplay experience can still be slowed down considerably.

This may seem a little vague, but does anyone get me?
