The "Official" SSBM Thread

Cool, a smash thread on here. Just wondering, do any of you guys also post on smashboards?

My main is fox, but I still suck at the game since I just started playing it in January, and I really only play it once a week or so. The “hardest” thing I can do so far is waveshine a few times in a row, but I mess up a lot still, and I don’t think I can actually utilize it in a real match yet.

That being said, SSBM is probably my favorite fighting game at the moment

EDIT:

Peach’s dsmash makes my fox cry :frowning: … and to think about it, it makes him fly pretty far sometimes too.

Ehh, it is the best dsmash in the game, but I don’t really think it is broken. The icy’s infinite grab though… that come pretty close

hey guys, I’m sorta cheap-bastard riggin’ it here and the only way I can play any form of smash bros is on an emulator. So, with that said, I can master short hopping and all the basics, but how the heck do I do wavedashing on the keyboard? pretty much L+Z+left/right right…? Do SSB skills translate to SSBM okay?

Not even. IC have some of the worse grabbing in the game. Poor change and very little things that set up for a grab (besides a throw… which means you would of needed to grab). People needed to just go out of there way to learn how to avoid being grabbed by the ICs… its alot easier to learn than lets say… how not to get grabbed by Marth and comboed to death right after forwards.

Wavedashing is only on SSBM. Wavedashing is possible on the keyboard but the timing feels really awkward… (its almost like playing with an arcade stick). And SSB skills may help in SSBM, but you are gonna need to apply alot more. I guess they translate decently.

Pillar rox ur fucking nuts off.

Have you seen chu-dat or wobbles before? IC’s grab game is pretty decent. And avoid a grab isn’t always easy against someone good.

But we aren’t talking about someone “good”, we’re talking about a hypothetical situation with two exactly evenly matched people, facts are facts, IC do not have an “easy” time grabbing, it’s because they attempt it so damn much that you see it all the time.

Thier grab range sucks. And thier approach ain’t nothing to write home about.

Indeed they do have a hard time nailing grabs.

I have actually met both of these player. Chudat hogged my tv all day taking money matches lol. IC’s grab game is lacking. Chu and Wobbles have trained pretty hard to learn how to lead into grabs the way they do. But just cause they can do it doesnt mean that the ICs have a good grab game. Remember Chu and Wobbles = Godly.

any advice on good starting characters?

for any smash players intrested

Marth is pretty easy to pick up and be decentish with. He has powerful aerials that are easy to link from his throws. His grab has some bitching range, the hit box is unbelieveable! So… Grab alot. On floaties its usually good to forward throw, Mid-fallers I think forward throw is good too. On fast fallers up throw is rape.

Shiek can chain stuff easy. Forward Tilt -> Forward tilt -> Fair. Her downthrow is a beast, can chain right into tilts or right into a fair. Throwing needles is good, very nice keep away projectile.

Peach is a good choice too. Good downsmash, great keep away with her turnips (which can be good for approach too), good dash attack. Oh if you float cancel her Fair you cannot be shield grabbed… >.>; Down Aerial leads right into a Neutral Aerial

All those characters require you to be a smart smash player/ have the experience to use them. Hence they’re not good for someone just picking the game up.

Marth is somewhat easy to learn at a scrub level, but I wouldn’t suggest him to a beginner surrounded by actual competition. Truth is, high level Marth needs brains and experience to win. I honestly don’t believe high level Marth is an easy concept to grasp.

Good beginner characters are Jiggs, Peach, Sheik (though she also requires brains to win at the highest of levels, since people are so used to fighting her), and Fox (seriously, as long as the player doesn’t get sidetracked by his technical tricks early in development, attaining a good, competitive Fox is hella easy).

High Tier: Sheik, Marth, Peach

okay, started out with mario, and I feel pretty good with him. Couldn’t pick peach because the disc skips (damn used games) and I don’t have anyone to play with so I won’t get marth or sheik. I’m actually more interested in learning Samus, so any tips with her?
(btw, L-cancel, shffl, wavedashing practice is great!)

I great starting character is Mario. He doesn’t have any abusable attacks at low level play like Peach and Marth. Even Shiek you can start doing dash attack to forward air very early. But Mario you have to work for each kill since he only has one true kill move. Plus he’s perfect for learning all the important skills such as wavedashing, L-canceling, and edge guarding which he needs to win.

So I would defnitely suggest to anyone starting out to pick him to learn with and then move on to who ever you like best.

I only watched the first video but some things you should do:

  • Don’t use forward air as much, try and neutral or back air them
  • Mixup your bomb return, don’t come within range or an attack while they’re still on stage unless you’re baiting it and quickly air dodge or move back to missle
  • Learn to use the down air, it can be a powerful tool not only as a spike but as a combo starter. A good easy combo is down air while they’re on the ground, bomb while in the air and then immediately neutral air.
  • Don’t underestimate how good ledge hogging is. Especially with Samus’ spike you should be able get a KO almost everytime you get them off the edge. If you’ve ever seen Marth do a rising down air from off the ledge onto the platform then you know what to do because Samus can do the same thing.

I wasn’t really paying attention to the L-Cancels so I don’t know how well you were doing with those but you should be L-canceling every air move pretty much. But other than that and the random death you had on your second to last life you were doing fine.
