The "Official" SSBM Thread

IF you do use an Up B out of shield with Marth (it’s actually not a half bad idea sometimes), make sure to turn around. Press Up B and then hit back so that you hit them with your back. That’s where the sweet spot is. Doesn’t quite have the same effect that Roy’s REverse Blazer does. (REverse Blazer has crazy knockback if you only hit with the initial hit. Try it on a shield broken opponent or a Jiggs that missed rest.)

I would only use it on a dash attack or something that puts you very close to Marth, even then it’s good to avoid using it much.

Grab out of shield is the fastest option is all. And Marth’s grab game is great. However, another option is just jump out of shield into aerial (probably fair).

Just wondering, but I heard that Link is anti Marth along with Gannon is also a fair match up against Marth. Anyone know if this is true, I’ve seen matches were Aniki’s Link spams the crap out of Ken’s Marth and win. As for Gannon, it doesn’t seem very fair IMO as Marth has a huge edge on ledge guarding, but Gannon can kill him at low % and his Fair does a lot.

Oh god, I thought I could get away from the whole “Link c0unt3rs Marth!!!1111oneoneone” shpiel from smashboards. <.< No, he doesn’t counter Marth. The match you saw was probably some of the casual matches they had. Casuals should not be used to support theory fighter, EVER. -_- Link can be a good matchup against Marth on a stage like FD but he is very far from being a counter. Link trying to spam against Marth on smaller stages with low platforms is very ineffective because Link doesn’t have a lot of space to do so and Marth’s anti-platform game is deadly.

Ganon isn’t a Marth counter either because once he gets off the stage, for all intents and purposes, he should be dead. Ganon can beat Marth if he doesn’t space correctly and trades hits. For every attack that Ganon misses though, he he’s usually in trouble. Marth can also combo him really well at higher damages.

ganon actually does well vs Marth, his fair is pretty much the same as marths. plus with propor DI ganon can live forever all march can really do is to keep knocking him off.

Ganon can be a very hard matchup for Marth. Marth takes hits like a little bitch and Ganon hits hard. Failing to kill Ganon early can mean losing one or two stocks, and Ganon’s Up air edge guard rapes Marth’s recovery. His grab game is VERY strong vs. Marth (a grab at any percentage is an aerial at LEAST).

Marth’s goal is to get Ganon near the edge and off the stage. This is his best bet to get quick kills against him.

Ganon far from counters Marth, but Ganon has a solid advantage (assuming the Ganon is good at fighting Marths). Marth just has to be very careful and not get hit lol.

Syn you are biased because you play Tipman. >_>
I say the match-up is even.

Ganon vs. Marth is a matchup that can be debated until the world stops turning billions of years from now and it’s terrestial landscape freezes from temperatures well below zero.

I may be biased, but I play against one of the best Ganon’s in the world, so I think I know this matchup better than most people. You can make a case for it being even, just as well as you can make a case for it being in either character’s favor – it all depends on who you talk to.

-Kimosabae

That’s what I meant originally but I forgot to clarify it.

Link doesn’t counter ganon, its even on FD, and pretty close on other stages, just as long as it isn’t YS and fountain of dreams. just saw someone mentioned link vs marth

I meant marth x_x

So an organization holds these tournemnts on campus for Smash Brothers, with a few of the people from Smashboards too. I bascially end up losing to Peach with my Marth. He bascially beats me with 2 moves, turnups and downsmash. I swear I’m blocking her Dsmash, but halfway through it goes through my shield. So I can’t block it and dodge it b/c how long it takes. I tried to space her, but then she just spams turnups. The only stage I could get her down to one stock was on Yoshi’s Island, and when I counterpicked on FoD, it didn’t help me that much more.

Is there a way out of her Dsmash, or should I just roll when I start blocking, any tips for beating Peach with Marth??

A brief update on EVO South - registration for SSBM has already filled up and there are no longer any spots.

Blocking D. Smash is always a last resort, as a full D. Smash will almost always manage to eat through a regular sheild. This is one reaon why you generally want to avoid being too defensive against Peach. If you must block D. Smash, make sure you remember to light shield, which will keep you safe. If do end up forgetting and blocking with your normal sheild, you can position your sheild down, towards the attack which may help you.

You want to grab Peach a lot. F. Throw at low percentages can lead to aerial comboes and F. Smash if you throw them fast enough and they miss their DI input (experienced players will be trying to DI away. Make sure you’re not going for chip damage if you want this to work. If the don’t DI, that’s money for you.

Turnips are part of what makes Peach’s offense so rediculous. If you can practice catching them (A button while standing, or Z while in mid-air), this will help you out tremendously. Not only will it hurt her offense, but the turnip will allow you to create an opportunity of your own.

Just be wary of experienced Peach’s baiting you with easily caught turnips.

Any stage with small sides are good for fighting Peach, as they make it easier to outright KO her. Yoshi’s Story, Fountain of Dreams, Poke’ Floats and to a much lesser extent, Pokemon Stadium, are good in this regard. Final Destination is also good because you can combo her for free. Battlefield is a large stage (vert wise), but the screwy nature of the ledges can mess up Peach’s recovery.

You want to avoid large stages like Dreamland and Mute City as she can live forever there. It’s hard enough to kill people with Marth as is.

-Kimosabae

Fountain of Dreams is a good stage to fight Peach on but one thing you need to look out for is her down smash (as usual). If the platforms are kinda low to the ground, her down smash will suck you up for a lot of hits even when it looks like there’s a fair bit of space between you and the platform. You might also want to avoid Kongo Jungle N64 as that’s a pretty large stage too and it’s a bitch and a half to edge guard her there as well.

That is one of the most false statements ever.

As for the problem with Peach, you should stay close to her so she can’t spam turnips. If she starts going for Dsmash’s just try and bait some and she’s wide open for a forward smash. And you can always space her with forward tilts and Marth’s poke. The whole point is to make her scared and flee to the air where she’s free to get combo’d by you.

Oh, and don’t forget to throw a lot, but that should be a given with Marth.

its hard to kill with marth when you can’t combo into anything I think is what syn is trying to say. After like 150% you can’t combo peach at all. thats marths biggest draw back you ahve to get kills at the right percents.

Fuck it.

Syn, how in the world did you get so much neg rep?

I think his sig speaks for itself.

lol.

Honestly, the sig is satire, because it doesn’t tell the story behind my neg rep at all. Very little of my negatives derive from the sig – I’m just not very liked around here.

I’m a very vocal Smash apologist that likes to use big words. Does it all make sense now? No? That’s SRK for ya.

Oh, you mean all the hate towards smashers. Well, there seems to less and less of that nowadays. No doubt due to the EVO staff finally recognizing our community.
