I’ve been having some trouble with my samus against marths. I keep getting dominated by marth’s Utilt when I’m on a platform and he’s underneath me. I can keep up when on the same level as my opponent, but I just get Utilt’ed all over the place. Any tips for this?
What’s up everyone, I’m “ThatGuy” on Smashboards, nice to meet you all. I’m fairly experienced in Smash so if you have questions or something feel free to ask me.
I feel your pain. Scrub Marth’s can be annoying and there’s nothing more humiliating than dying from a random tipper while you’re trying to bait him via dash dancing. And since you’re dashing expecting to not get hit, your DI will turn out horrible. If you can see patterns in his f-smash, run up and dodge, then punish him hard. The “Ken combo” will come in handy since Marth is the perfect weight for it even at lower damages. Or you can counter because if he has the habit of f-smashing every time you get near, the counter will smack him in the face and allow you to gain the offensive.
Speaking of Ken, I just came back from a UCSD triweekly tourney and ken was there (along with other pros like DSF and manacloud). I played horribly though…only victory I got was from my opponent’s DQ lol.
Cool, thanks a lot, I’ve played against other Marth’s on Smashboards with some problems, but Scrubby Marths get to me, glad to see someone feels my pain.
I can rape scrubby Marths with no sweat but sometimes I have to put in a little more effort to win than I would like.
The last UCSD triweekly I went to was back in March of last year. I did really well but Ken, mana, and DSF weren’t there. I went there mainly to compete in the UCI vs UCSD crew battle.
Scrubby marths are annoying. I almost lost a casual to one and all he did was dodge roll and Fsmash. Random dolphin slashes FTW…not.
You should start going to the triweeklies again…the most recent one had a HUGE turnout. I think some dudes got mad about ken and mana’s modded controllers.
WTF is with them and having modded controllers? I find that to be pretty unethical. But I haven’t played SSBM competitivey for ages. I need to get beat back into shape. D:
Some guy at the triweekly made this thread today about modded controllers: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=96732
I hope they get banned because it’s just like baseball players or any other athletes using steroids or any other substances to enhance their performance. While watching Ken play, I noticed his Fsmash would come out SUPER QUICKLY after throwing his opponent forward. My initial thought was that he uses the c-stick and has super quick fingers. But I was wrong…it was that modded controller! My friend that overheard ken’s conversation told me he heard manacloud say ken would get pwned if he didn’t have his controller.
Ken would get pwned if he didn’t have a modded controller? Lol. I doubt it would make that much of a difference.
SSBM is officially on the Evo roster.
What kind of mod would do that?
hello topic, how are you?
yea against marths like that its good to just be patient really and stay in shield a lot because as soon as they throw the fsmash and u shield it u can attack first because of the lag of there move or if u just get close but not in range theyll throw it out randomly and u can fmsmash them instead ^^ and u can grab marth throw him foward then fsmash if they dont have proper di that works extremly well for marth on marth matchup
Fine, and you?
(BTW, the first page of this thread made me LOL)
SSBM is extremely complicated and intricate at high levels of play. id say moreso than any fighting game on this circuit, hands down. watch two top-10 players play some matches, and then try and do what they do, as fast as them. its literally impossible. it literally takes months for muscle memory to develop in the hands to learn some advanced techs, and it takes even longer to learn the mindgames and tricks to outsmart your opponent. BTW I would gladly money match any other fighting-game-player $50-$100 on a match to prove just how much work it takes to become good at this game
Ken and mana don’t use modded controllers numnutz
Trust me when I say that attitude is not gonna fly around here G-reg. I agree with everything you said, mind you, but that post demonstrates a lack of tact around here that could destroy this thread.
I only know from experience.
edit
I’ve been away from the scene for a while. Can someone explain to me what the whole Mana and Ken modded controller debacle is about?
-Kye
G-reg, the game does take a lot of skill to play at higher levels as I have witnessed it all firsthand, but you greatly underestimate the amount of skill needed at high levels of play at other fighting games too. You make it sound like random people can place high in tourneys at other fighting games but that’s very far from the truth. People who rank high at events like Evo are people who have been playing those games for years. To compare SSBM to other fighting games in that aspect is unfair to say the least.
Anyway, the Mana and Ken modded controller issue was kinda brought up at some tourney that happend not too long ago. Not sure about all the details though.
i didnt mean to sound like a prick, for that i sincerely apologize. in no way am i trying to discredit skilled players at other fighting games, i was merely responding to rumors i had heard about other fighting game players saying melee is easy to learn and a “kiddy game”. maybe thats old news and im just beating an old dead horse, but i was just letting my opinion known. i just think the SSBM has a wider variety of variability and individual style. not saying that other fighters dont, i just think melee is the pinnacle.
