hey guys since this is a sonic thread, i thought id ask.
for a noob I loved Sonic 2 the most of the 2d genesis games but havent played any other games since then.
What game would you recommend (if any) that comes close to the Sonic 2 experience?
I have a DC, xbox,xbox360.
Thanks
They all suck. Sonic 2 is the only experience that comes close to Sonic 2. Better off asking which handheld Sonic is close to Sonic 2 in experience. I’d say Sonic Advance 3/2 on the GBA. And if you need more speed, Rush/Rush Adventure on the DS.
Ouch!?
Well he said which one is closest to Sonic 2. None of the 3D sonics are close to the 2D games in terms of gameplay. There’s zero exploration. Just run forward. And the bosses? C’mon. Nothing can hold a candle to Sonic 2’s bosses. Cept Sonic 3K.
Q: What was everyone’s reaction to the flying stage in Sonic 2? You know, after that three act bonanza that probably had you thinking it was the end of the game.
I know that I was shocked as hell as a kid. Like the game just went to new epic levels I didn’t know were possible in gaming. And then the final stage was just too much. When shit goes to space, it’s on for real. Then there was metal fucking Sonic and Dr. Robotnik’s giant walking robot. Shit was gold. FUCK. Forgot to mention how hardcore Sonic was by hanging on to Robotnik’s ship as it broke through our fucking atmosphere.
Sonic will never be that cool again.
The character for me still retains most of the coolness he still had…even with it being Jason Griffith. Problem has always been the games for the most part and not the character.
Sonic 2’s epic last few stages were definitely good…but one of the defining moments for my self was during S3 & k when Knux got zapped and he decided to help you out and you left him behind lol. When you jumped on the death egg and everything was crumbling I thought he had probably died.
lol…seems we aren’t the only people who think the same way about the hedgehog…
It was pretty good but Doomsday Zone can’t be ignored, the idea even carried over to other sonic games. Have you played Sonic 2 game gear bosses? They shit on everything, EVERYTHING! Not even Sonic 2 genesis bosses can top these fuckers :shake:
I think we (as a whole) hold the earlier games on this magic pedestal, viewed through Rose Tinted, platinum trimmed glasses, and rank it higher than the newer titles based on mostly nostalgia, and because they were first. Compound with the fact that the 3D games (especially the latter ones) were less than perfect, and we have a problem. Unfairly judging every non 2 Sonic attempt, and putting them through unnecessary scrutiny,
The Original games were good, but they are not (IMO at least) the pinnacle of the Sonic series, or where I want the extent of Sonic games to be. Yea, running around on 30 million back to back loops is fun, but Sonic wouldn’t be around as long as he has WITHOUT games like Adventure. That put him back in the game.
I’ve said for years that the perfect Sonic game on a major platform (because Sonic in 2D still thrives in the handheld market, thanks to Dimps), would meld what made the 2D ones great, and what made the earlier 3D ones so appealing, and Sega seems to finally be listening, and doing just that.
I played Sonic 2 yesterday. Its just as good today as it was 13 years ago when I first played it. Nothing rose-tinted about it; its just that fucking good.
The question is, would you pay $59.99 for it, and play it on your 360? I sure as hell wouldn’t.
They were brutal. IIRC you didn’t have rings to protect yourself with. Only skill. I remember that first boss like it was yesterday. I think that I’m going to go download the GG emu now.
I agree with what you said earlier shade. Looking at things from Sega’s point of view they want to try to appeal to fans and try to make money off this thing…and there’s probably not enough of a reward to risk ratio to just completely make a 2d sonic game on a 360/ps3. There are more gamers out there and if they just completely catered to us then that’s money that they’re missing out on. Most of the whipper snappers now only play games that have good graphics and what not and probably will never be able to experience anything as funny as ‘never being able to catch the fat ass’ or as epic as the egg mech or the last few moments of either sonic 2 or s3&k.
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were fine as well as Sonic Heroes but the problem was that they were missing something from the 2d games that they just couldn’t get down. Now…it looks like they’re taking a lil bit from things that worked and putting them together into one game. Sounds like a recipe for success but as with just about everyone I’m gonna be sceptic and wait till i hear more info…
Which is ironic because that’s what most people paid to play Sonic 2 on their Genesis when it first dropped.
It might be just me, but I think that’s the problem with games these days… official games pressed on discs are usually overblown, cutscene-riddled mega-epics with high-end production values and high-definition (visual and aural) assets to justify the high price, and if it can’t satisfy those requirements, then they’re released as under-advertised XBLA/PSN downloads. The stakes are so huge that making a GAME in the most basic sense of the word is such a risk. If the game isn’t a grandiose odyssey or a surefire EA-type franchise, it usually gets chucked to DS (nobody makes PSP games anymore) or download. I thought Wii would bridge the gap between hi-end and low-end, and between pick-up-and-play and enthralling cinematic experience, but it’s not happening on that platform.
Back to your post… if Sonic 2 was brand new in 2008, and exactly the same content-wise, with better graphics (doesn’t even need to be polygonal, it could be HD prerenders mixed with sprites) and music… basically looking about as good as Gradius V… I think $40 would be a good deal. And I think most people would too assuming that Sonic 2 didn’t exist 1992. It had plenty of character-driven appeal and gameplay novelties that would turn a lot of heads.
I see what you’re saying. But I’m personally not referring to overblown non-gameplay related content (although I agree that’s an issue, but for another topic).
Sonic 2, even with a graphic update, was too short, too easy, and extremely repetitive. Now, Sonic 2 was a work of art, and was great for it’s time, but even with a face lift, it’s not a game that would fair in todays environment, or that I would want to repurchase at full price. Even without all the fancy bells and whistles, gaming has indeed progressed much beyond what was done in the 16-bit era.
Dammit, I can’t rep you, David Caruso is too hardcore.
Thanks for nothing
After finishing games like God of War PSP and Devil May Cry 4 at standard difficulty (highest before more modes and difficulties are unlocked) in a matter of days, I don’t think modern gameplay has progressed that much in difficulty or complexity… but it’s not like Sonic 2’s gameplay is anywhere near cutting-edge, granted.
I would pay 60 bucks for Sonic 2 if it was released today.
SEGA
There hasn’t been a Sonic game I’d pay full price for since 1993, so it really doesn’t matter that much.
For those saying that newer Sonic is shit, go play Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure on DS, and kindly STFU.
