The Official Sonic the Hedgehog thread

yeah, that shit is rare. I have seen it sell it for more,as high as $80-100

edit there are 2 versions. the 1999 dvd with just the dub and the 2004 version that has the dub and japanese with subtitles. obviously the 2004 version goes for more. the lowest on amazon right now is $64 so I think I got it for a good price.

DVDshrink is pretty good for making copies.

So I finally got Sonic Unleashed for the PS2 the other day…

The Sonic gameplay during the daytime stages is kickass, but I have to get used to the twitchy reflex stuff that pops up (sliding through gaps, perfectly-timed homing attacks, etc.). I’ve often found myself replaying stages in order to gain Medals and to just experience the blinding speed again. As for the Werehog stages at night, it’s actually not that bad (yet). It’s very satisfying to kick the crap out of my foes with sheer brute force. My only problem is the damned floaty-ass jumps! Besides that issue, I’m having a pretty good time with the Werehog.

The music is really good, too. Especially the music for the Werehog stages, which is very jazzy and mellow. Jason seems to be improving as Sonic, which actually surprises me a bit. However Chip is really getting on my nerves! He doesn’t seem to shut up during tutorial levels!

The plot of the game is like a bad fanfic, as usual, which proves even further that Sega has no clue what to do with Sonic anymore. However, I’m able to forgive the lame story since the overall gameplay is decent.

I had a feeling that Unleashed wouldn’t turn out as shitty as Sonic Next Gen, but this one COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY surpassed my (lowered) expectations and turned out to be a pretty solid title! I would echo others that have enjoyed this game by saying “it’s a step in the right direction,” but is Sonic Team actually gonna stick to this direction??

I’ve been very impressed with the music in the 3D Sonic games. I listened to the Sonic Unleashed and Shadow the Hedgehog OSTs over the weekend and was pleased with both. Sure Shadow’s game blew chunks, but the music was dope.

Anyway, I’m playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles with Tails, trying to get all 14 emeralds. I’m on Carnival Night Zone and I’ve already got the all 7 Chaos Emeralds. I’m using staved states because some of these special stages just piss me off to no end, especially the ones in S&K. I’m gonna see if I can find some maps of those stages. Not sure if it will help.

I wonder if I watch Sonic the Movie in subbed form, will I like it better? I’m a dubbed guy, and I can do subs, but dang it, that dub for Sonic the Movie sucked hairy goat testicles. Was it the voices, or was it just a bad movie?

Any of you guys read or used to read Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic? I bought an issue today (#195). I haven’t bought a Sonic comic since #25. A lot has changed. Sonic has parents, and Bunny Rabbot is married to Antoine.

Sonic Unleashed’s music is pretty good, even the werehog ones(adabat night) sounds awesome with it’s slow, yet hauntingly mellow theme. The only music I hate is the battle music whenever the enemies show up. All of the stages have cool tunes, even the hub worlds. There are the day and night versions which distinguishes the stages really well. It’s overall a well done game that deserves more than what it’s getting. The werehog stages are’t half as bad as people paint them out to be. They are challenging and the platforming is well put together.

Have you guys check out the beta areas which sega left out.

Seriously? I sold that crap for like $10 a year or 2 ago. it was absolutely hilarious, but after awhile I decided getting my money back was a better idea.

Anybody play Sonic Riders: Zero G? It was a decent racing game. Plot made me want to bash my head in though. Hella confusing to learn though, bad tutorials.

Not too much of Shadow the hedgehog’s music really stood out for me besides the ending songs and the main theme myself but Unleashed’s music I’m enjoying quite a lot.

s3’s special stages seemed to be a bit more linear at times than s&k’s portion…though it had a few that you could easily just follow the yellow b…i mean follow the blue sphere trail and it’ll take you where you need to be.

I doubt watching that movie in subbed form would make it too much better…you wouldn’t have to worry about the horrible ass voices…that’s for sure and I’ve been collecting the comics (main series and X…which is getting turned into different series…and treated as like an alternate universe now especially after the events that occured recently) for awhile now and keeping up with the story. I don’t mind what Archie has done with the characters since SatAM. Next issue is going to be interesting since it’s basically a handicap match…in the lone corner’s favor.

Something I noticed in the books at gamestop recently is that Black Knight and Madworld are going to get released on the same day now… on March 10th. Sweet baby jesus…

I wish I have the wii. I am curious to see how black knight turns out. Sonic and the secret rings looks quite fun from what I’ve seen. Why is it that the wii gets these cool “side series” while ps3/360 gets the main ones only?

You’re not missing a whole lot with Secret Rings. It laid groundwork for Unleashed, and was entertaining in it’s own right, but don’t feel bad to have skipped it. As is typical of Wiimote-controlled games, the precision leaves a lot to be desired. There’s a very annoying level-up system too, because it affects what skills you get and some of them (like improved responsiveness) really should have been available at the start. There are a lot of missions too. A lot. The “finish the stage with no rings” and “don’t collect any pearls” missions were particularly bad.

I actually did enjoy playing the main levels and boss fights, but seriously there were a lot of downsides too. Don’t go out of your way to give it a play.

Are you playing Zero Grav or Riders 1 because ZG wasn’t confusing to learn and had decent tutorials. ZG was hella easier to play than Riders 1 despite actually having more to the game than Riders 1.

You absolutely couldn’t pick up and play Riders 1, and certainly not with friends, unless each of you memorized each level because you’d smack a wall or die(fall off the level) due to insanely sharp turns, lots of them. You have to learn ZG’s tracks to an extent but you can sometimes use the gravity powers and other systems at the last second to bail you out whereas Riders 1 was simply unforgiving.

Story sucks in both, but it was absolutely bogus in ZG. The gameplay, music, and track design saves it though.

I dunno, some of those gravity powers and where to use them take some learning to really abuse properly.

I just played the demo of Sonic Unleashed on PS3 and I gladly went back to my Sonic 3 & Knuckles (on PSP so I could put my Mega Drive out to sell it (after I am 70) on eBay for crazy money).

Iirc I got some of the best times/ranks on many of the tracks and finished the game(without acquiring all gear) in a couple of hours. Wasn’t that hard to discover trick spots or shortcuts at all. I never even finished Riders 1. I think I quit playing the game after not being able to complete the night version of the sand level in Babylon story. Like really, I couldn’t even complete that shit under like 6th place or something.

My whole point though was that ZG was a beginner, and new user, friendly game(50x more than Riders1) while still maintaining some depth andd satisfaction for mastering, or attempting to mastering its system. I never even got to experience the game multiplayer before I got rid of it but I bet it would’ve been almost as fun as a Mario Kart. I can’t remember if they took weapons/attacks out of ZG or not but this would’ve been my only gripe.

that’s actually pretty cool to me…Wonder what exactly it was that made them decide to leave it out?

Oh I love all the changes they’ve made in Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic book. The book has made a lot of progress and has moved forward and I think that’s awesome.

currently it holds the record for longest Video game comic book adaptation iirc…

I should be fuckin asleep…but i just haaaaad to go and take a look at the wiki page for BK lol.

so basically they updated it with which character will be playing who. Lol at Amy as Lady of the lake and Blaze as Joan of Arc.

I notice the new boxart that’s up…and instantly see the wifi connection up there and as far as it says you’ll be able to use the internet to trade objects and what not…doesn’t say anything else you can do with it currently.

I don’t remember that screenshot with him grinding…The textures in that screen shot look pretty good.

BIG PLUS - the game is apparently going to be more like daytime Unleashed than Secret Rings…including switching between 3d and side scroll and they’re keeping the skill system from secret rings but trying to fix it so it doesn’t mess with the tempo of the game…I’m assuming that means hopefully no more ‘you gotta level up to be able to move left and right properly’.

Only thing I’m really worried about so far that they have yet to show at all is how exactly the sword play is going to work into this game since that’s the ‘gimmick’ this time around and as usual it’s going to probably decide whether it makes or breaks the game. Things sound like they’re going ok…don’t fuck it up sega!

WTF Joan of Arc? I don’t remember her having a damn thing to do with Arthurian legend. Was she even around at the same time? And what about Guinevere? Seriously, Arthur’s bitch… the one Lancelot stole.
EDIT: Yeah I read on Wikipedia. Joan of Arc is about 900 years later than Arthur, and French not British.

Oh well. From the info released so far, it looks fun to play. But well, we all know Sonic Team’s record for this stuff. Then again, Unleashed was good times, so maybe…

It looks interesting…thats all I’ll say right now but one thing that makes me happy is that Crush 40 will be back doing a track for this one.

Have you ever played Tomb Raider Legend or Anniversary? Sonic Rush or Sonic Adventure? God of War or Prince of Persia? Sonic Unleashed is not as good as any of those games and it should be because they basically lifted gameplay ideas from all of those. Somehow it didn’t pan out quite how it was expected to. But I didn’t quote you to talk about that.

The two videos you posted basically proves that Sega made a big mistake with Unleashed. And I honestly think they only had to do ONE thing.

Separate the two gameplay modes into their own separate games. Because you are right in saying that the game isn’t that bad (oh it’s bad enough for me to get rid of because i have many more better games to spend my time on but you get what I’m saying). It’s like two different construction crews trying to build different homes on the same plot of land. Sure it could be a nice hybrid in theory but neither one will be fully realized.

So just watching those lost beta area videos (I love bugs and hidden shit like that in games!) and showing how, once all the pieces are in play (didn’t know that Werehog could air dash) you could create a pretty rich environment for the player to explore. The whole jungle beta area reminds me so much of Tomb Raider. A combination of climbing, platforming, and switch/puzzle solving that’s a winning formula. And the Werehog combat could have used a more simpler move set that concentrates on quality and not quantity. Like in a game like DMC4 where it’s about what you do with what you have that makes the difference. Each move has a purpose and isn’t there just for the sake of being there.

And there are a couple of ways that Sega could have marketed this game. A brand new IP is one. Billy Hatcher didn’t turn out so well but maybe something like this could. My other suggestion, and my personal favorite, is reviving Ristar. There are too many similarities between the two games to not get that feeling that some Sonic Team designer was inspired by that game. The way Werehog and Ristar climb poles, swing on rods, stretch out their arms. It’s clearly a homage to Ristar. I think if Sega would have just let the Werehog sections be it’s own Ristar game it would have turned out much better. The question is would kids get it? Clever marketing could get the world. Adults would remember Ristar from the good ol’ days and the fact that the game didn’t suck helps too. My last suggestion would be a stand alone Knuckles game. How popular he is with kids is the problem though.

So now you are left with this 2D/3D gameplay hybrid of a Sonic game. The best 2D/3D hybrid platformer to me was the Crash Bandicoot series from the PS1 era. Both modes felt great to me. Naughty Dog did a helluva job keeping the synergy with the two different camera angles. You never lost abilities and controls didn’t change. I mean you don’t in Unleashed either but you know what I mean. Crash was hella good.

Unleashed gameplay/controls aren’t as bad as they just are unrefined. Being able to jump from platform to platform should feel as natural as it always has in the series. That, and the camera being a bit too close in on the 2D sections bothers me. Now the 3D portion just needed to feel tighter. By level 2, in a decidedly kiddie game, I need to be able to know exactly what Sonic will do when I do it. Powersliding feels off to me. Sonic Team should have studied Mario Kart more or something. Or changed the way it is performed.

What I would have liked to see the most is an expansive Hub World. Less like Sonic Adventure or any other hub world for that matter from Sonic games (or even like GTA) and more like Shadow of the Colossus. A giant world that goes on for miles with unique areas to explore. And I know of the perfect setting in the Sonic universe where that can take place. Free rep to the first one who figures out what I’m talking about.

How nice would it be to run as fast as you want without having to dodge spikes or hit enemies for a minute. Just to enjoy running and jumping around in an open world before you hit a level where things would turn appropriately nasty. Example of the game flow:

Game starts you off at the front of this hub world. This area is a beach and is basically the Green Hill zone. Go through it and beat the first act. Game saves. Now you are in the hub world and some story bits roll through and you have to go back to the Beach Hill Zone (clever huh?) and complete the second act and fight a boss. Now the game really starts and you are given some silly quest or whatever where you have to visit places of your choosing except for levels pertinent to the story.

Imagine a hub world that’s less compact car and more like gas guzzling SUV. Sonic has never done will in cramped spaces. His games have always had huge levels so why try and contain him in a tiny time consuming hub world? If you are trying to stretch game length at least make it fun ya know? Hell, throw in Tails and Knuckles to change gameplay up a bit by leaving areas that only they can get to. Blaze and (sigh) Shadow could make an appearance too. But personally [I think] Sonic could stand fine on his own.

I really hate coming to this thread and being so down on this and other Sonic games. I love this series but I hate playing other games that are doing everything better. Only saving grace Sonic has is his speed.
