The Official Sonic the Hedgehog thread

Sonic 2 was made by STI in conjunction with Sonic Team.

Sonic Adventure 2 was developed by Sonic Team USA

The reason I noted Sonic Adventure 2 was because it was clearly the last Sonic game that had a substantial amount of effort put into it. It was meant to be the last push for the Dreamcast and it showed with great level design, cool ideas and many, many bonuses and easter eggs.

Jeff’s blog entry has some truth to it. I don’t completely agree, but I don’t disagree either.

I would love to see a new Ristar. put Sonic into hibernation or whatever hedgehogs do.

I want a next gen Shinobi game that wont suck. I think its about time Joe Musashi got some air time.

Also, relating to spec’s link, I hate people who want to bring back Sonic to its “good old days” just so they can relive shit when they’re possibly way too old to be playing Sonic. They can easily buy a Genesis from a store and play all the Sonic they want. There is a new generation out there who is simply liking the Hedgehog’s transformation over the 21st century. While Im not bagging on anyone here or anyone in general, its about time that they dont worry about that atm.

I personally liked Sonic Unleashed because it was something new and creative to the franchise. Hell, even my older uncle liked Unleashed. So what Im saying basically is that people who bitch about new Sonic being old Sonic once more for their entertainment need to either play what they have now or just ignore it and play Sonic 1 for speed run purposes.

I think that’s one reason why people give Unleashed the boot.

Fuckin Sega of Japan needs to get over themselves with the quickness. I already knew about Sega’s internal struggle between the powers that be over in japan vs. America. I knew it was pretty bad as well and reading stuff like that makes me :shake:. Especially when it shouldn’t be like that and to date they’re the only company that I can remember that has had internal problems like this across different continents and just can’t fuckin get along and it affects their games. You don’t ever hear about Miyamoto or Iwata catchin a plane from Japan to go sparta kick Retro Studios in the chest over small things they dislike in Metroid stuff do you? Stuff is ridiculous.

Also if Sonic Team needs a break from the series then do it and stop having them pump out shit. I wouldn’t mind if they went at a Nintendo like pace and released a sonic game every 3 1/2-4 years if it meant that the game would definitely be higher quality and better…and ideas like ‘We should give this highly powerful hedgehog…THIS PROTON CANNON!’ get ironed out of the game entirely. That or continue to outsource the game to other companies and let them take a crack at it…you got Dimps…USE THEM. Bioware was actually interested in doing a game for you? and it was a sonic rpg? AND IT WAS DECENT!? Toss them somemore money with the quickness so they can make a possibly better sequal.

If worst comes to worst though…sell the franchise to Nintendo :wonder:

I’m at odds on that one…especially I feel his response to the inevitable question of ‘what about mario?’ comparison sounded iffy. Technically the series has been TRYING to grow up with it’s fans…just that they’ve been doing it in the wrong way…that I’m sure doesn’t need to be spoken of because it’s already known. I also like how this guy doesn’t even admit to the game being any better than than previous which I’m wondering about a bit.

In all honestly though the way things have been going with 2006 being the lowest the series has ever been…I want to be optimistic for what comes out later. They’re so close to it that I want them to make it without shooting themselves in the foot. Should be hearing more info on BK halfway through the month hopefully…

I also find it interesting that when Sega makes a not so great sonic game that the fans show that they care and voice it…especially for a franchise that’s survived this long. When the Crash games come out in all of their mediocrity I don’t hear fans of Crash complaining over it. Sorta shows how deep rooted a lot of the fan base is lol.

Yuji Nagi needs to return with all of the good sonic team members whom he took with him. The hedgehog engine that powered sonic unleashed is phenomenal, but not perfect though. If they can improve on that engine and tweak it further for future games along with yuji nagi’s ideas, the sonic franchise would own harder.

I wanna give a big fuck you to eggman land =/

It’s Yuji Naka.

My bad… I keep confusing his last name. :looney:

That guy lost all credibility when he said Sonic CD was the last good Sonic game.

By “glory days” I don’t think people want a Megaman 9 style Sonic 4 (though that would be cool, as long as it isn’t running on Genesis emulation like the MM9 copout excuse) as much as people want a game that is actually playtested and has effort put behind it. Say what you will about, oh, say, Gears of War 2, but Epic staff put real effort into the title, more than all the 3D Sonic games put together.

I do disagree with his love of Sonic CD, partly because Sonic CD is terrible (I have no idea why it’s so beloved) and Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles are superior in every way (though arguably not as good as Sonic 2, even w/ Lock-On), and partly because the first couple of Adventure games, while HEAVILY flawed, did have genuinely fun gameplay here and there. But Jeff Gerstmann’s points are sound.

Ain’t it the truth man? Although they need a next gen Shinobi game with HOTSUMA. You’re just like the old heads in your post by wanting Joe Mushashi lol.

And don’t make the old heads dust off the Genesis. They can just buy that Ultimate Genesis Collection that comes out next month.

Watched Lil Majin and Big Majin play Unleashed yesterday. Wow man. I’m not too hype on the Werehog stuff, but the Sonic parts look amazing. I love the speed in this game. The Smash Bros/ Mario Galaxy music turned me off at first, and the fact that even though Sonic is running almost faster than ever, his quills are stiff as shit like in Sonic the Fighters or some shit (likes Sonic '06 design a tad bit better), but dude…I gotta get this some kind of way. I kinda don’t wanna buy it, but renting it is not gonna be enough. And it’ll be a while before I can borrow it.

Looks like I actually might have to break my resolution and actually buy another game before SFIV. I always thought it’d be Skate 2 or Afro Samurai but the Sonic boy was gonna so fast it sent chills down my spine.

Beyond the Sonic CD-liking, I also don’t agree with that guy’s idea that “we’re too old for Sonic.” That’s total BS. The Genesis games were fun because they were fun games, not because I was a kid and didn’t know better. It doesn’t matter how old I get, Mario is still fun times. Me growing up doesn’t mean that I have to stop liking cartoony things and start liking violent things. I reject that notion.

His point has more to do with criticism and age. Criticism is crucial; it encourages devs to improve, and that criticism is sorely lacking in Sonic’s target audience. Jeff is also a critic; seeing these titles continue to sell despite their very real flaws is incomprehensible… unless there’s a large fanbase of players who simply like Sonic for the sake of liking Sonic.

So I watched Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie on YouTube last night. Snap. I watched it now I can’t unwatch it. Sonic and Tails sounded like they had terrible head colds. At least the music was good. Even managed to find an mp3 of the kickin’ song “Look Alike.”

Sonic CD as the last good Sonic game? Hey, I dig Sonic CD, but let’s not forget Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the Sonic Advance games or Sonic Rush. Heck, I even dug Sonic Adventure. Sure, it had it’s flaws, but overall, it was still fun. Some people are riding Sonic CD’s nuts too hard. I even still like some of the side scrolling Game Gear Sonic titles.

Yeah Sonic CD is not that good. Loved the Sonic anime…

It honestly just comes down to Sega not giving a shit. Thank god that other Devs are allowed to molest Sonic and we get a good game.

yo Joe Musashi is the man. Don’t be hating, he is so badass he waited until his third game to run. What ninja is so hardcore he only walks? Joe Musashi.

edit
and I agree, the Sonic CD nut hugging is ridiculous. it is ok, the level design is shit, making sonic bounce a lot does not equal good level design. and the time travel aspect is really flawed. you need to be going at full steam for like 12 minutes before it kicks in, with no interruptions which is fucking impossible.

I like Sonic CD. I mean it’s far away from being favorite. Sonic 2 is my favorite and and i even like Sonic Adventure better the CD (Sonic part of the game is long enough to make up for all the other characters he takes up the most portion of the game it’s great) but Sonic CD is still fun. I like it.

yeah unfortunately a lot of the fanbase is like that…of course myself being guilty to a certain extent (I bought Shadow the Hedgehog…but I didn’t buy 2006). I don’t necessarily think that there isn’t criticism however…just depends on the type of fan. People been complaining about Sonic’s ‘friends’ randomly jumping up out of nowhere and that led to Secret Rings and Unleashed.

I think the problem lies in what someone said earlier in the thread though…that everyone has there own idea of what a perfect sonic game would be.

‘THERE CAN BE…ONLY…ONE SONIC’ and ‘You might know everything that I’m going to do but that’s not going to help you since I know everything that YOU’RE going to do…STRANGE…ISN’T IT? GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!’

and the tagline is so horrible… “Scrape some Knuckles. Catch some Tails” Who in the bloody hell gave the Ok for that?

speaking of the sonic movie I received something in the mail, something very tantalizing and desirable…

I received the Sonic movie on DVD. yes. and it also has japanese language with subtitles if the dub isnt your cup of tea.
and as my way of giving back to the community, I am going to rip it to an ISO format and make a torrent out of it so that nobody else has to spend what I spent for it.
$52 to be exact.

what is a good program to use?

Whuh?!
