Anyone familiar with shogi or tournament martial arts at all? I’ve been watching a-cho match videos from various games, and aside from ranking battles, some of them are labeled as 5 to 8-level matches. Apparently this is a shogi thing? http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/十段戦_(将棋)
It doesn’t seem to be a round robin in the traditional sense, but the players seem to rotate. Doesn’t always seem to be a race to x# of wins, either. Can anyone give a quick rundown of the rules?
I’m guessing they’re just matches between players of a certain ranking.
It is danisen. You start at 1st dan and work your way up. +1 point for a win -1 point for a loss. 3 points = rank up -3 = rank down. After 9th dan you have to get 5 points to rank up.
Hey, I was thinking about traveling to Japan for a week or two during the summer. So many people have been telling me not to go… so is it safe/ok to go or not? >_<
Seriously, you’re at least the 3rd person to ask this on this page. Japan is safe to travel to, safe to visit, etc. Life goes on as normal. You’ll not end up glowing when you go home (probably, but wouldn’t that be cool?)

You’ll be okay during the summer as far as safety goes.
There’s no radiation, but honestly, I would not recommend coming to Japan in the summer if you can help it. The weather is unbearable if you’re not used to humid climates. If you’re fine with humidity you should be okay though.
Just wonder what kinda stuff there is to do in tokyo that might interest an srk member…aside from the regular tourist spots. Like video game stuff, anime stuff, samurai stuff etc etc. just cool spots that you probably wouldn’t see in the guides.

I know allot of the currency there is coin based after a few days of walking around with a pocket full of change i broke down and bought a change purse… with flowers on it and shit… Is there a less homo substitute for guys??? Big black guy with a change purse isn’t a good look for me.
