The Official Japan Thread 2.0 "Nani?"

Yo did anybody grab any videos of the matches that went down at FRJ03? I remember maybe it was being streamed?

Hope everyone’s doing well

since SBO is right around the corner everybody is practicing. im sure you can find some people.

Yessssssss!!!

narita airport is outside of tokyo, take the bus. lots of different bus lines, mine took me directly to the hotel, just ask at the counter at the airport exit. asakusa is close to the big JR line that always goes in a circle, its really no problem getting around. it might seem intimidating at first but its really not hard (this is coming from someone with possibly the worst navigation skills amongst non-blind people in the world). just always take a train map with you and you’ll be fine.

hmm … was at taito station at about 2pm . no one was there …

hope someone will be there early tomorrow .

who are you looking for exactly anyways? and in what game?

street fighter 4 .

top players to play with :stuck_out_tongue:

SCOTT POPULAR, WE RUNNING JAPAN BACK BABY IM IN JAPAN ON WEDNESDAY LET’S DO IT!!!

Ontop of that though, where should I go for SF4 training sessions? SSF4 playing? Does anyone know in the Tokyo area? EG will be at NSB of course but I’m looking for some places to fucking play man. Someone give me a clue on where I should head out for SF4 / SSF4 or check some top players cards for me.

thanks for the reply sir  much appreciated

ugh man… so I think I mentioned before on here how one of my JTEs just left on maternity leave and we have a new JTE this week and her welcome party is on Friday night. I was thinking about skipping it but now I found out that the old JTE is coming too and its like her farewell party. Me being the ALT should probably go or else it looks really rude. People asked me if I was going and I sorta just basically straight up told them what my situation is but the reaction was sorta like “well, its your choice, but…” as in like it would be rude of me not to come, not to mention I had a good relationship with the JTE who is leaving. So it looks like I might just suck it up and go to the enkai which ends at 9 and take the last train and arrive in Tokyo around 12:30 Friday night.

Im gonna enter the last chance GG qual still (and registration starts at 7 ends at 8 am on Saturday morning at Makuhari Messe) so basically I would pretty much have to get like only 5 hours of sleep at the manga kissa and just leave from there at about 6 am to make it on time. If I drink a ton at the 2 hours im at the Enkai, I can probably get drunk enough so that I can manage to fall asleep on the train for about 2 hours on the way to Tokyo. I would need to set a bunch of alarms in order to make sure I dont sleep through my stop to transfer or else I would be straight screwed probly. That combined with the 5 hours at the manga kissa would give me enough sleep so that I shouldnt be too tired for the tournament.

So basically im trying to figure out the best way to optimize my time. Im trying to think of the closest station to KaihinMakuhari that would have a manga kissa that I could make it to that night. Shinjuku would work but Akihabara would optimize my sleep time but slightly more. However, I can only recall one manga kissa there and if its full id be fucked where as in Shinjuku I have options. Also, at the one in Shinjuku I have a membership card and I dont have one in Akihabara so Id probly have to fill that out which would waste time. Ive never stayed at the one in Akiba so I dont know what to expect. So what do you think, should I crash in Shinjuku or Akihabara? Any other stations closer that you think might work? The area right around Makuhari Messe is pretty dead since its just a big convention center.

The other thing that sucks is I found out that theres a GG tournament on Friday night at Mikado that I will miss now. I also havnt played GG in almost a month cuz ive been doing lots of stuff around Gunma and drinking in Tokyo and playing mostly just SSFIV, so having some practice would probably be good.

tl;dr This sucks balls, advice please

As sucky as it sounds, straight up, work > games.

I know of at least 4-5 in Akiba, they’re everywhere, lol. Not always on the main street, but they ARE there.

The problem with a manga kissa is that there’s a shit ton of people there for TGS, so the manga kissas might be full. That happened to me 2 years ago at SBO, I went to stay in a manga kissa on the Friday night, and every single one in Akiba was booked and the trains stopped running. I just walked around until I found a capsule hotel and slept there (luckily enough, I managed to just walk in the right direction for like, 15 minutes based off a gut instinct that I would run into a capsule hotel).

So I think you would be better off in Shinjuku anyways, especially if you know the area better, because I would imagine less TGS people are going to stay there. Also, as far as sleep goes, I dunno about you, but I generally don’t sleep too much before a big tourney. At least for the first part of the day after the initial wakeup passes, the general adrenaline of the tourney tends to keep me awake. Even if you get 4 hours for the night, you should still have enough in you to play in the tournament, and then you can worry about sleep after that.

tdlr - sucks, but go to the enkai and you should still be a good enough condition saturday to play the tourney either way.

As far as missing the friday mikado thing, that just straight up sucks, no sugar coating there.

yea, I signed the signup sheet that I was going to the enkai before I left work today. I guess missing one Mikado tourny wont kill me. The only reason I really wanted to go to this one more than a regular one is all the out of town players are here. Oh well, at least I can still enter last chance and there will be casuals later so its all good. Could be worse. Yea… Ill just stick with Shinjuku to be safe. Thanks for the heads up about the Akiba situation.

you could take a bus and sleep the entire time if you are a good sleeper.

Due to low interest, I’m not gonna make reservation for post-SBO gathering. I guess I gonna wait til Hooters opens

So for all you guys going to Nagoya for NSB, how long are you gonna be in Nagoya for? Its a long weekend so I was thinking of maybe chilling most of the weekend in Nagoya after the tournament, but I dont know my way around anywhere and dont know anyone who lives there. Do you think it would be worth it for me to hit up some arcades there and go drinking for the weekend out there or should I just head back to Tokyo the day after NSB and spend my weekend there as usual? Im gonna take an overnight bus so im debating if I wanna book a trip back on the bus now or just feel it out and take the Shinkansen back whenever I end up feeling like it. Shinkansen would be an extra like 5000 yen

If I get that day off, I’m going back to Kyoto that night. If i don’t get the day off, I’m going back to Ono that night. Either way, I’m not sleeping in Nagoya.

If you want to go sightseeing for a day, that could always be fun, hit up some nagoya places, eat some food nagoya is famous for, go see some Nagoya arcades, etc. If you’re not really feeling that, then yeah, can’t go wrong with heading back to Tokyo.

The way I see it tho, if you have the desire to, you’re already gonna be in Nagoya, why the hell not, right?

I guess it all depends on who you’re gonna hang out with in both situations, too.

the tougeki site really doesnt help me, the important stuff is not translated

i heard somewhere that you get access to sbo with a tgs ticket, true?

and is there a rough schedule? i probably wont have time to stay from start to finish on both days

Some really interesting points you’ve brought up there, WM. I feel like hit Wherdafaqarwi Tribe Phase and the Wakatta Phase at the same time. Don’t get me wrong, when I first got here I was wowed by loads of things (vending machines everywhere, 24/7 combis etc) but at the same time, there was loads of other things that are fucked up/wrong. Like, I know a fair bit of Japanese (I’d say I’m heading towards the latter part of the beginner stage) so I can understand/speak enough to get me the essentials (food, directions etc.) At the same time, I know enough to know when people are talking about me. I’ve heard ‘kokujin’ once or twice, some guy muttered something under his breath while staring at me and I picked up ‘omae’ instantly. There’s probably tons of the other times where I wasn’t paying attention. Interestingly though I’ve only been called gaijin when one of the train staff was helping me out with a coin locker. It terms of the whole negativity thing, honestly, I thought I’d be better at dealing with it. I don’t make an issue out of it, but I think about it when I’m on the train or in the street for example. We’ve already done the whole ‘gaijin’ discussion and discrimation so I’ve leave it at that.

Public transport is another issue. I manage to avoid rush hour when I can and head to the back of the train where possible (seriously, why do hardly any Japanese people head to the back of the train, it’s empty as FUCK) but the etiquette there is something that really will take time to get used to. It’s rude as fuck to barge others out the way, trample on their feet and not even bat an eyelid. I don’t know, back in London, people are usually more courteous. I’m not even saying this as a Gaijin, heck, I’ve seen Japanese salarymen barge high school girls out the way. That shit is bullshit. Again, I’ll save the list of ‘shit I think is fucked in Japan’ because we (and by that I mean you guys) will be here forever.

Also, I’ve travelling with a friend from school who’s of Hong Kong origin (he looks quite Japanese though) so he gets frequently mistaken for being and speaking Japanese. It’s really interesting to how people react when we’re together and how we’re being treated. It also doesn’t help when he keeps saying ‘people are staring at you’ but yeah, the whole topic of him is another story. Basically, I think I better pick who I go on holiday with next time a bit more wisely.

Still, I think there’s alot for me to explore so I can’t say much. I was lucky enough/saved up enough to come on holiday here and I don’t regret it at all, I’ve been having a really good couple of weeks. I’ve honestly learnt about myself in this trip and time away from home that I can appriecate alot more when I get back. England is a pretty cool place, actually. Japan has alot of disadvantages/advantages compared to back home, and if I was to live here, I’d have to come again to visit a couple of more times before I can truly say I want to live here. I’m definitely try and get here for the International Programme for '11. Props to you guys who came here on a whim and decided to stick it out and make a go of it, it’s really admirable.

Oh yeah, nice meeting some of you at the loketest test (Reno, HeartNana?) although extremely brief.

I’m not gonna front, arcades and stuff are what keep me wanting to stay here, lol…

Yo.

I live in Nagoya. It’s kinda lame here; 4th largest city in Japan, but it feels like the countryside (at least to me, coming from NYC). You play GGAC right? In Nagoya there’s only two GGAC arcades, and one of them is for tournies only. The other has 2 cabs, which always have people on them, but I don’t know the skill level- honestly, I doubt it’s very high compared to other parts of Japan. I think you got the right idea by staying for a day/night; you can hit up all the “must-do” things in Nagoya during that time.

-eat Miso Katsu + Tebasaki (conveniently sold at all izakaya).
-check out Sakae, the only place open past 10pm in this city.
-wander around Nagoya Meieki, which you’ll be at when you arrive in Nagoya.
-the touristy shit (Nagoya Castle, Osu Temple, Nagoya Port, etc) would take more time, but it’s kinda gay unless you’re into that stuff.

I’ll be at NSB, I’ve got a long weekend so I can show people around if they staying in the area. Also…

**NEED TEAMMATES FOR NSB! I DON’T CARE IF YOU SUCK, BUT WE NEED TO PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS SHIT! ANYONE UNSURE ABOUT COMING TO NAGOYA, READ ABOVE, I LIVE HERE AND CAN SHOW/TELL YOU WHERE TO GO. **

Also for anyone really poor + not gay, I’ve got a couch you can sleep on for a night or two.
