DAY THREE
The first thing I did was head over to the Capcom booth because I wanted to get the Alvin Lee poster they give you for competing in their tourney. I really didn’t want to spend too much time there because the Capcom panel was starting in 2 hours and I didn’t want to miss that.
The crowds were so CRAZY this year that for every day except for Friday you had to arrive at panels almost 2 hours in advance or you would get locked out of them. This is the reason I would up missing a lot of things I wanted to go to like the James Marsters panel, the Young Justice panel, the Gundam 00 movie and most of the Marvel and DC Q&A panels. It’s all good since if you missed any one panel there was always something else you could attend, but boy the show was straight up bananas! Well hey as long as I made all of the Capcom related panels I was more or less good.
I played one MVC3 game prior to participating in the tourney and won with a team of Thor, Amaterasu and Viewtiful Joe! Hooray I got a win! The Asgard stage in person looks AMAZING BTW. :lovin:
I got to meet Capcom-unity’s JGONZO. I told him how I confuse him with SNOW for some reason. Well now that I met him in person I don’t think I’ll make that mistake again.
He shouted me out on the Live Capcom Stream which was cool. Super nice guy!
Waiting on line for the tourney I got to meet SRK’s Keits! He won five games in a row in the tourney and won the Marvel bag as a prize! :clapdos:
When I had my match Keits said I better win because I’m representing SRK. I assured him that I’m probably going to lose. The guy I was playing wasn’t that good either but it made for an interesting match I think, of two people having a lot of their super art attacks not connect. The announcer said it was like watching a game of SF4 instead of a game of MVC3. Well I’ve played much more SF4 than I have MVC2 truth be told so that does kind of make sense! My team was Super Skrull, Wolverine and Dante in Normal mode. Wolverine felt really good to me since I was able to pull off his Tornado Claw and Drill Claw like the older games. I beat one of his characters first, then both of our second characters lost at more or less the same time. It came down to Dante and Super Skrull. It was a really close match and we both had each other down to very little health towards the end. Still he managed to pull out the win! ACK can’t say I represented SRK very well (ha ha I’m just the Comic Book Mod guy lol) but I think towards the end we put on a good match when we started to figure out how the game worked, got accustomed to the tag mechanic, the X-Factor and the launcher button and things like that. And my opponent made a really good comeback to pull out the win. Oh well WHATEVER I got my Alvin Lee poster and that sucker’s going right on my wall! Don’t really feel like I lost anything since I had so much fun! Once again a HUGE thank you goes out to Capcom for coming down to NY and bringing MVC3! :clapdos:
Didn’t even hang around to see how my opponent did after I left since I had to run off for the Capcom panel. It was 11:00 AM and Capcom’s panel started at 12:15. I started to line up for it outside of the room but the people there were cool and told me they were not going to empty the room after the current panel (they were doing that A LOT this year). So they said I could go attend the current panel in the next room and secure my seat.
The panel itself was really interesting since it featured a rep from Bleedingcoolnews.com. When he asked if we had any questions about the industry he started talking about Alan Moore in great detail since someone asked about him. One of the things I recall is that Alan Moore of course wants nothing to do with any movies based on his works like From Hell, Watchmen, etc. He is working on his own movie however, about Burlesque Dancers. Um, okay… NO American Distributor wants to go anywhere near this one… LOL oh well he’s still one of the greatest comic book writers of all time. To each his own.
I asked about Steve Ditko and he spoke in good detail about what he was up to. From what the rep said he’s still putting out comic books but he’s not really using Diamond to distribute them so they are hard to get a hold of. He hates the current comic book industry and wants nothing to do with it, but he is such a way that he will probably never sue for the rights of either Spider-Man or Doctor Strange, the characters he co-created. I talked about Moore’s Rorschach in Watchmen, who was supposed to be like Ditko’s The Question but actually turned out to be more like Steve Ditko. We had a pretty interesting back and forth talking about Steve Ditko
Someone asked if it is easier now to attain the rights of a character you create for a company like Marvel or DC and the rep said it’s even harder nowadays then it used to be. The reason is because now they use a lot of these characters as spring boards for movies and cartoons and even video games so it’s really hard to get a big piece of a lot of that action. By the same token this is something both of the companies have to do to survive nowadays.
In the end what I thought was going to be a very boring panel turned out to be a really fun way to kill an hour. Bleedingcoolnews RULES! :woot:
Next the Capcom panel started and I got a great seat! :row: Most of it was a recap of all the games we’ve seen at the show, so no new MVC3 info there. We saw trailers for Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes, Okamiden, and Ghost Trick. But with Keiji Inafune in the HIZOOOOUSE most of the panel was about Mega Man info! :lovin:
One thing we learned about Mega Man Universe is not only will there be more Capcom characters in the game like Ryu and Arthur but there will also be characters that are not from Capcom games. :wow:
The rest of the panel was about the ‘Mega Man Legends 3 Project’ for the Nintendo 3DS. Why was it called project? Simply put, Capcom wants a lot of input from fans of the game to help create it. Starting with, do you remember that rocket that Tron and Roll were trying to build to get Mega Man Volnutt off of that planet at the end of MML2? Well Inafune wants us fans to build it by submitting designs for it! They are also taking submissions for boss characters and things like that!
Inafune did show us some of the designs of the game that they have created already so it isn’t like Capcom’s not doing anything and leaving everything up to fans. There were some specs for one of the stages, a Servebot and a Reaver. Looking good!
MML 3 will also have a new female protagonist! There are 8 different potential designs for what this female character will look. There is quite a range from some of them looking like they are of African descent, one of them looks like a native American, some of them look really young and others look like teenagers. Each was designed by a different artist that has worked on the Mega Man series. Even Inafune, who is too busy to do much drawing nowadays submitted a sketch! :lovin: Who will the new heroine be? Us fans get to vote online and the one with the most votes wins! Man, all of them look really good but me I’m tempted to go with the design from the Mega Man Zero artist just because he’s my favorite artist of the bunch, but it’s still a really hard choice… :wonder:
Capcom really wants fans involved with the creation of this game and they are not just blowing smoke. Over at Capcom-unity there will be a place where you can discuss your ideas and what you think the game should be like. Every post will be taken seriously and will help in the game’s creation. They are even trying to hire someone for a temporary positiong. You have to be a huge Mega Man fan who can speak and read Japanese and English. This is so you will be able to communicate the ideas from fans in English speaking regions and Japan to the creators. They are taking resumes now.
For more info about the Mega Man Legends 3 Project you should check out the Capcom forums. Me I’m relaying what I heard and have no time right now to find links or anything like that and I’m not even sure what’s up there right now. Still if you want help finding some of this stuff just ask me again when I’ve gotten some actual sleep LOL either here or a PM and I’ll be sure to do what I can.
Went to main event after this, the John Romita Sr. and John Romita Jr. panel! Way too much to go into but one of the things that sticks out was when JRSR was asked what he thought about characters he worked on being put into Marvel movies. He said that he was the one who designed Wolverine. As is the case for a lot of characters, sometimes the person who first drew them for a comic book first (Len Wein for Wolvie) is not always the only involved with his creation. At the time the editor asked JRSR to design a character called Wolverine so our Logan is what he came up with and the claws were his idea. When he saw Wolverine pop his claws in the first X-Men movie it was a really cool moment for him. The second time was during Spider-Man 2 when Spider-Man through his suit in the garbage, taken from his famous Amazing Spider-Man cover. When he saw the movie Peter David was sitting behind him and at that moment PAD yelled, “JOHN ROMITA RULES!”
John Romita Jr. said for him it was the scene in the Kick-Ass movie where Big Daddy is being burned alive and yelling instructions to Hit Girl. And after Hit Girl kicks the age and stops the camera by saying the show is over. He said that scene had a huge emotional impact using characters he helped create. JRJR he doesn’t care what people say since some of his friends liked the Kick-Ass movie and some hated it. JRJR feels one scene showed some great film making right there.
JRJR was asked about the 9/11 ASM issue. As some of you might now to this day JRJR refuses to even look at the book again. He said it was a really emotional experience for him and he was crying most of the time he drew the comic. For reference he blew up images of the 9/11 disastor to put around his desk. Some of the images changed as more news footage started to emerge so he had to stay on top of it. This was mentally disturbing for him to have to reference such a tragic event while it was still fresh in the papers. He of course means no disrespect towards anyone who lost family members during 9/11 and in no way is saying that he had it as bad as some. Still it was very hard for him to draw that comic during those two weeks.
On a much lighter note, JRSR and JRJR were asked who would win in a fight, them or the Kuberts. JRJR said they would win since they are Sicilian, they don’t mess around and will put a bomb in their car. They said of course they are friends with Joe Kubert and his two sons so they were playing around.
Finally I attended the Bruce Campbell panel! OMG that dude is SOOOO FUNNY! He showed up wearing a white tuxedo, like WHAT THE HELL? He spent the entire time dissing people in the audience, but in a playful and funny way ha ha! I can’t even begin to do any of it justice here but there was one moment where a girl called her boyfriend and gave her cellphone so he could say hi to her. Bruce picked up the phone and said “I’ve kidnapped your girlfriend and you’ll never see her again.” Then he hung up the phone.
BRUCE CAMPBELL RULES!
Suffice it to say I had a really amazing time! Didn’t go to every panel I wanted to go to due to the insane crowds and there were some really tough choices with deciding which events to attend and stuff. For the usual New York Comic Con and the New York Festival events we usually only get half of the space, but with the conventions merged for the first time ever we had the entire building to ourselves! Some of it was quite some distance from the main floor show but on the other hand it was awesome that Artist Alley had it’s own room and there was an entire room just for Fan Art. It seemed to work for everybody since there was huge crowds no matter where you went on Saturday and Sunday. Oh and during the Capcom panel they said that we New Yorkers were so cool with them and showed them so much love that from now on when they think of Comic Con they are going to think of the New York Comic Con! Ah don’t fret San Diego peeps, it’s probably just a political answer. No worries since they always go to San Diego. So long as they keep coming to NY from now on it’s all good! And bring Udon back with you guys MAAAAANG! Yeah it blows that Udon hasn’t been back to NY for a while but hey at least I got my Alvin Lee MVC3 poster FOR FREE so I have nothing to complain about.
Give me a few days to toss up pictures since I REALLY need to go to sleep now and overall just catch up on real life stuff. Thanks for reading! Now off to bed…
