Same style of D-pad as the Pro controller, but slightly larger.
I feel its good overall D-pad. Not the best for fighters, but SNES style D-pads are where the bar is set.
You know what controller I thought had the best D pad?
This one.
In fact, the Wii U Gamepad is one of the best controllers I think I’ve ever used. It is extremely comfortable for my big hands, and it has a goddamn touch screen on it.
Yes this is a fact
After playing the PS4 and Switch for some time, I fired up da U, the controller is super comfortable. The buttons and the placements of the analog is ace.
A shame that Nintendo botched that launch, the system while not great as an overall system the concept was legit when used proper.
Ngl the Switch lite has really surprised me. Much better than the 3ds or reg Switch joycons. Been playing 3S on dpad and i can do basically all the shit i used to do on stick
The pad is how I preferred to play certain games. Wind Waker HD and Hyrule Warriors immediately come to mind. I don’t think I’d be able to manage it now but before it was just the right width and just the right heft that it was super comfortable to me
Hell yeah, man. I actually preferred it to the Pro Controller. Used it for Tropical Freeze, 3DW, New Supe U, XCX, and Mario Maker, too. Platformers felt especially good because the D pad is so good on it.

Mario Kart NA Open announced
Hm. I’ll be honest, I think Nintendo dpads are bad. I went back and played some NES games with my bro and any game that requires any sort of diagonal movement is rough with those pads. The size of the snes pads are better, but I remember killing my thumb and forearm when I got SF2 as a kid and was playing it on that SNES pad. No thanks.
N64, same as the SNES, and that little dpad on the gamecube controller was probably the worst of them all. That controller made no sense in so many ways.
The one Nintendo dpad I did like was on my DS Lite, only problem was, it was a but small. But overall they did the dpad well on that, imo better than on nay of their consoles.
I’m with you on the NES D pads. Those things were so stiff and they wore out to the point you had to press extra fucking hard and hurt your thumb.
But my experience with the SNES pads is the complete opposite. I still think SNES has one of the best D pads out there. I also spent a lot of time with SFII on SNES and never had any issue getting the special moves to work (with the exception of maybe Gief’s SPD).
Before I got my 8BitDo, I plugged in one of the SNES controllers from the Mini to play Mario Maker 2 on the Switch because I just couldn’t play with the Pro Controller. It was a huge breath of fresh air to get the same feel of the OG SMW controller in my hands. Never had any cramping or soreness with those pads, personally.
GCN controller might have the worst D pad of any controller though. What the fuck were they thinking?
“We are probably never going to use thing.”
Also probably a trademark on the design.
I could get the special moves to work in SF2 it just wasn’t always comfortable

Man I didn’t buy no new game to play at the hospital. My son’s been super into Mario recently and NSMB (although it’s too hard for him to play other than first few levels) and he loves watching me play. I realized I hadn’t beaten the game and got kind of bored with it so I played through some worlds earlier so I could get to the last world which I think is mushroom kingdom and show it to him. He’s like obsessed with mushroom kingdom right now and plays around in there in Mario Odyssey like every day for an hour. And his mushroom kingdom toy from Amazon is waiting at home for him too and he’s going to be super excited to get that “from his new baby brother”.
Lot of memories of putzing around in Peach’s courtyard in SM64 back in the day…
did you get him the merio lego sets? I told myself not to buy anymore but…
man kids have the best toys now.
edit
Nah I haven’t gotten him those. He’s kind of into legos so maybe as he gets more into them and sees there are Mario ones, that may get him more into it.
As for mario toys, I got him this 3 set of Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi a while back on Amazon and they are like 5" tall so pretty decent. Then I got him some Mario Kart hot wheels stuff too. And he asked for the Princess and Mario wedding amiibos from Odyssey as well as the Mushroom Kingdom toy set, so we have those 3 toys waiting for him at home as the “gift from the baby to him” so he feels special too when he meets his brother.
My niece is big into Pokemon. I’m thinking of getting her Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. I’ve yet to play my copy but I like the demo that I played and I do think she would enjoy it though I’m still on the fence.
Was able to find a Switch for sister for her birthday at a reasonable price. Now I just gotta get her Animal Crossing. She got a house on my niece’s and nephew’s island but it will be her first time starting an island from scratch. She’s already put it over 200 hours on their game so I’m sure she’ll do just fine with her own island.
My physical copy of Streets of Rage 4 arrived on Saturday. Not sure why the game released under Limited Run Games first a physical releas being more widely available through merge.
Also got scored one of the last copies of Crash N. Sane Trilogy at Target.
