Wuz up with all the Jacky players? Jacky was my fav until I started picking up Aoi. He’s always been solid and fun to use. I figured everyone would be running the Lei Fei train. Lei is tough to use though. Looks like Aoi is barely staying away from the C tier spot. She’s my fav so I don’t really care what tier she’s in. Especially with like 5 people qualifying with Lion despite him being in C tier. VF5 by far has the most interesting tiers of any fighting game I’ve seen.
i am usually wrecking havoc with wolf
yeah lion is basically the wild card of the game. he has some TERRIBLE matchups - akira almost outright destroys him - but his unpredictability is too much. he can either frustrate you to death by being insanely slippery or die in a few hits.
Jacky is really solid, i agree, i’d probably be using him if Lion hadn’t gotten to me first.
i’m not sure why Aoi was in C to begin with, her g / sundome cancels create some really neat mindgames - maybe her damage is really low?
She has real low damage and has a hard time punishing.
Yeah…I’ve never seen real strong combos/juggles come out of Aoi. She’s more of a mind game kinda character and that’s what I like any ways. She has a lot of fakes and plenty of reversals and counters and all that fun stuff. Aiki Jujutsu is just an interesting style to me in general.
BTW do characters have different defense ratios in this game? Like does Jeffry take hits better than Lion and stuff like that?
Jacky is HELLA scrub friendly for beginners.
Not to mention he has that whole “badass white boy” look/appeal to him.
Yeah, it’s not as drastic as say, 3S. But the characters take damage differently from each other.
–
Jacky is only “scrub friendly” in that he can be played very basic. But really, all characters have “scrub friendly” traits, then they all lose that ease as you play against decent players.
Last I heard, Jacky and Kage were the most played characters in Japan by far. Does that still hold true?
Are there any good Lei Fei players on Live? I am interested in playing a good LF. The only guy I know who is decent is Dark Third Eye. Everyone else just button mashes.
Gonna be on for a bit right now. Feel free to add me. Shun Di player btw.
Its not his matchups that make him weak. He just can’t deal damage too well in general compared to other characters.
He has an average throw game. He has many moves that can lead into combos but most of them are slow so he is not so good at punishing. His best launcher (2_6p+k) is really good but needs a counter hit to float opponents. His other good launcher (44k) is high and leaves him backturned so if it whiffs he is left in a very bad situation. Finally, his combos don’t do too much damage. Its hard for him to get past 70 pts in a float/crumple unless it involves a wall.
But Lion is good for his evasive properties and ability to punish evaders/tech rollers with his circular attacks. Almost of his attacks outside of his circulars and low attacks leave him safe on block. He has a versatile sabaki attack (214p) that stop all normal attacks except elbows. He is effective in any range: close, mid and far. He can poke defenses apart taking off damage little by little. This is how great Lion players win with him.
Everyone has the same life total (200) and takes the same damage from individual hits. So technically, no.
Combo damage though vary greatly between characters. This is due to the specific combos that can be done to each individual. In general, lightweights (girls) take more damage than heavyweights but there are quite a few exceptions where the heavyweights (Wolf, Jeffry) can take more damage.
Weight class is as follows from lightest to heaviest:
EI, AO, PA, VA, SA, EL, GO, BR, KA, LE, LI, SH, JA, LA, AK, WO, JE
The way some exact combos behave on certain characters is arbitrary.
Take this example combo from Goh’s chop punch.
46p, 6_p, 4p+k, 336p+k
This above combo normally does 51 pts for this group: VA, SA, GO, KA, SH (BR, JA, LA if they fail to quick rise/tech roll third hit)
But it does 45 on LE (you can land a better combo on Lei)
It does 57 for: EI, AO, PA, EL, LI
The third hit doesn’t connect on AK, WO, JE
From tournament entry data from VF.Net, Kage is #1 most used in tourneys followed by Jacky, Pai, Akira then Lau.
JunoSynth is really good with Lei-Fei and is online periodically. Sometimes it’s his brother playing under that account who plays Lion. Also very good. I hear Dre Fei is real good with him too but heard he hasn’t been on much lately at all?
man, i had to completely rework my use of that fucking move because it doesnt crumple on normal hit anymore like in Evo =(
Thanks 4659 for the up to date tier list.

I am so pissed that sega is making a patch for VF5 on 360 when PS3 owners are not even updated to version c. What a betrayl on ps3 owners like me who got the game when it came out.
