-The New Martial Arts Movie Thread-

That, but also Jackie and Biao were increasingly more interested in becoming more independent than working as a trio under Sammo which caused tensions to boil over (more from Jackie than Biao).

Thought it was cool.

Working under Sammo? They all had already establish their own careers…It was just egos for all 3 actually…Sad thing for Biao though, the most agile & likeable one ended up having a shitty career after that…

Sammo was my fav out of the 3 & probably these best action choreographer of all time…

Yes, working under Sammo, the Director of the movie and their ‘Big Brother’ from the Opera troupe days… They butted heads over creative differences and what Sammo says goes. Quite frankly I’m surprised considering Sammo often took a back seat in his own movies in order to shine the spotlight on Jackie and Yuen.

Biao continued to work with Sammo, the falling out was between Jackie and Sammo, not all 3. It is a huge point of sadness to me that Biao didn’t have a bigger career, it’s criminal how underused he became considering his skill and finese. Sadder still was seeing him as the tubby policeman in Benny Chan’s Robin-B-Hood.

The main reason of the fallout between Jackie & Sammo was because of Once upon a time in China & America…Jackie felt Sammo stole that idea, you can see Jackie reprise the same role in Shanghai Noon like Jet Li’s character…The fallout between the 3 dragons were professional jealousy, probably mostly due to Jackie’s international fame. Notice Biao never did a movie together with Jackie after Dragons Forever until what 20+ years later…

meh…

About Jackie’s Who am I film: What languages was it released in? Or did the movie have a mix of Cantonese, English and African?

There is multiple versions of this movie. The American cut has 9 minutes taken out and the HK version is the legit full movie. I belive the HK is in Cantonese with english subtitles.

^Thanks, just wanted to make sure.
BTW what are some good Tae Kwon do movies?

Best of the Best
Spin Kick was decent too

Could you provide a wiki entry or imdb link for Best of the best?

I’m pretty sure someone said this, but: Duel to the Death.

I hope someone said it…Anyway where do you guys even get these movies from?

ip man 1-2 got me more interested in wing chun. any other good wing chun movies out there? the only one that i’ve heard of is the Prodigal Son, but i don’t even know if it’s any good and it’s not downloadable via netflix.

also other are there donnie yen movies worth watching? the only ones i’ve seen are flash point, legend of the fist:return of chen zhen, and ip man 1-2. wasn’t much of a fan of legend of the fist (the movie seemed too imbalanced plot-wise to me) and from what i remember (it was years ago) flash point i thought was alright/pretty good.

Their major fallout was during the making of Dragons Forever - you even stated this yourself - which was made 9 years prior to Once Upon a Time in China and America! So no, it wasn’t because of any plot theft from a movie that was nearly a decade away. Yes, there were accusations that Sammo stole the idea from Chan, but that’s NOT why they fell out initially, not unless they can both see 9 years into the future. It’s also the reason that Biao, Sammo and Chan hadn’t been in a movie together since.

Prodigal Son is a legendary movie, highly recommended. You could also try Wing Chun with Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen.

As for Donnie Movies, yes. New Dragon Gate Inn, Once Upon a Time in China 2, Wu Xia, Tiger Cage 2, Killzone (Flashpoint is the prequel), Iron Monkey is a fantastic movie similar in style (time period etc) as the Tsui Hark ‘Once Upon a Time in China’ and Fong Sai Yuk movies.

^Ummm which Prodigal Son movie are you talking about? There seem to be 4 movies with that title.

As far as I’m aware, there is only 1 martial arts film of that name, it might just have different dvd/blu ray pack art depending on who had the rights or lisence for the movie at the time. Basically look for whichever one has Yuen Biao, Lam Ching-Ying (legend!) and Sammo Hung in it.

For Donnie Yen, you gotta watch Iron Monkey. Another is SPL, or Killzone as it’s known out of asia. Just make sure it’s the uncut version.

I checked out Prodigal Son because it was mentioned in a Martial Arts Movie thread (maybe this one) and it had some badass fighting. You’ll have to either download a torrent of it, buy it online, or if you’re lucky, go to a movie-rental store that has it.

Dragons Forever was when they began their fallout, OUTICA was their major fallout when they stop doing stuff all together…

Prodigal Son the one & only staring Biao, Sammo, & the late great Lam Ching-Ying(Yall need to see Mr. Vampire its a classic too)

I think i have the Media Asia dvd of Prodigal Son when it first release & an old vhs boot haha…Its a top 10 essential kung fu film…You should be able to pick up a cheap re-mastered one in the US, i saw them going for like $7.99 at Circuit City when there was a Circuit City…

Not really a fan of wire-fu but Iron Monkey was one of the few that could stand at the time…SPL was cool since there hasn’t been that many good kung fu flicks for a long ass time but the fight scenes dont really compare to Yen’s 80s-90s films like Tiger Cage 2, In line of Duty IV, or Legend of the Wolf…Sammo was already too old in this, guy is a legend…Sad that most people only know him as the old fat dude in SPL…Sammo is greatest action director ever, even when the movie sucked ass you know at least fights will be amazing! Anyway, guys check out Pedicab Driver, its one of Sammo’s best!

I watched this a long time ago, so I can’t remember if it’s actually good or not. This, Prodigal Son, & Michelle Yeoh’s Wing Chun aren’t like the Ip Man movies from what I recall. The fighting is old school slow and choreographed, and the Wing Chun style is used on an off, so most people probably wouldn’t enjoy it.
