The music is (barely) passable (Music Discussion Thread)

New York/Metro City stage is god awful.

It’s fucking elevator music. It’s what you hear in a hospital waiting room. What is wrong with this composer?

I suppose you can play your own music via Spotify

Except that it isn’t. You can measure a ‘good’ music from a ‘bad’ music, without personal taste but with true technical knowledge about the subject. A kid playing guitar with 2 weeks of training compared to someone who have being playing for a lifetime is not the same thing. It’s the same thing for a music composer… it’s the same thing for everyone/everything actually.

I enjoy Kanzuki Estate, Hillside Plaza and the Main Menu theme more than almost anything from SF4 at this point.

Pretty sure he simply meant it in a “this sounds good to me” and “this doesn’t sound good to me” sense. Y’know, opinion-based? Not like it’s factual or anything.

Not if the other stages work properly. Can’t really blame the players for that. Hopefully the low res background models help.

Theres still people who consider enitre genres of music or artists terrible even if they have become hits.

Its just like pro football teams that have “garbage” quarterbacks even though they had to fight hard to be a garbage QB. They have technical skill to be in the NFL but if they’re not performing or a second 3rd string they are garbage.

Im pretty sure youd have to get a bunch of people who graduated from a school of arts to ever get a debate about music being good or bad solely relating to the technicality of it. A lot of people these days don’t even like music technical enough to care. Simple and catchy is what is good music for most mainstream listeners.

To put it in perspective. If I asked everyone to make a list of which songs in SFV are good and which ones are garbage, you’d get such a varied list its crazy. People choosing songs based on the genre or tempo and probably only select people admitting “all tracks are garbage because the composer is garbage”. Maybe youll sit in your chair with your arms folded and say “I can’t believe anyone thinks any of these tracks are good, because they aren’t” but that’s the reality of it.

Simple and catchy is effective to the mainstream listener, but for an audiophile like me it can be annoying to have shitty tracks in a game. That’s just personally though. I’m enjoying some of the tracks and disliking others at the moment, similarly to the soundtrack for IV. Brazil is catchy and upbeat, but Russia, USA and kanzuki estate are kind of ZZZZZZZZ for me. What I think would make the soundtrack slightly more streamlined and generally better would be a tilt in direction. Right now it’s a fairly 50/50 mix of priority with melody and filler SFX(ala tekken). Take the 3S soundtrack for example, the loops are short and catchy but they are are really catchy and thematic which is effective IMO. Right now I’m getting a ‘‘mmmm not sure whether this should sound like IV or 3S’’ vibe.

I may be in the minority but I think the music is excellent in this game

Don’t worry, I’m with you. Definitely in the minority, though.

I love almost every song (training stage is pretty lame).

I feel like sakura and balrog had the best theme. And that one theme I don’t know the name of but it sounds ominous but I don’t think it is a character theme.

I can’t really like every song in this game even if I tried. Most of the newer stage music still feel bland as hell. Sure now we can change training room settings to stages we want now, but it’s only like 2 passable songs I can listen to right now.

Also I feel some of the character themes are going the wrong direction.

A strange statement when we haven’t even heard a single full theme yet, let alone that Capcom only let us preview like 3 of 16 themes

Someone told me they redid/remixed the themes for the beta? Not sure which one, I’m assuming either main menu or character select.

Can anyone confirm?

Shitty music doesn’t suddenly become good by being made longer.

Completely agree with you. The music feels absolutely uninspiring and dead in a way. It just doesn’t feel right. And I have yet to hear a single good track from this game, but from the looks of it the game just has a sound that is not appealing to me at all.

The brazil stage theme sounds pretty good though. NYC stage sounds like someone just died or something.

The music just doesn’t go well with a fighting game in my opinion. If you compare this OST with previous versions of SF or other fighting games you can clearly hear that SFV’s is a bit monotone and not very up-tempo. Almost as if it sounds unfinished or that the current themes are just placeholders ( I wish…).

If the character themes are just as bad as the stage themes then I will have to rip my hair every time I play SFV unfortunately.

i think it’s intentionally vanilla as fuck because e-sports or some shit, idk

Considering the previews we if the song isn’t starting off that great chances are it isn’t going to become better like 2 minutes in. I mean once you heard the 1st few seconds of Bison’s theme I doubt it’s going to suddenly become godlike, unless Capcom is pulling some extended remixes or doing something more 3rd style with them. I really don’t see them doing that though.

I do feel they are spreading out a lot more with some music approaches in this game which is good, but I don’t want too much to fall into that techno style shit. They going the right way with the stage themes though like Brazil.

3s is when the bad music began lol!
