It actually sounds pretty good, but it’s derivative of a lot of other things. Apart from sounding like SoulCalibur, I quite clearly heard this riff in there, blatantly stolen.
Yeah, the Kanzuki Estate theme isn’t bad (at least the first round), but it still has huge problems. For starters, it’s too damn quiet. This is probably the quietest music in SF history. Doesn’t have the energy or intensity you’d expect in an arcade fighter.
Especially when it goes to the second round, it sounds like the kind of music you’d meditate to, not the kind of music where you’d see Birdie bashing someone’s face in with his skull.
The softness of it all is brought to our attention even more because the theme picks up as it transitions over to round 2 and then goes flat. It’ll be a treat to listen to outside of matches, but I can see where that’ll annoy people in-game.
Street Fighter IV had some good tracks in there, Gen and Guy’s themes come to mind but SFV has nothing. I can’t remember any song from the game so far. I really wish Capcom would get off this Electronic and synthe kick that they’ve been on. MvC3 was the same way. This music needs some kick and some style to it. I haven’t played any KI but every time I hear it on streams I’m like wow this sounds awesome. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was the same way. That game is nothing but good music you could listen to outside the game. SFV needs to bring it.
If we’re gonna be fair you can’t really include the character themes since they’re just remixes. Even I could fix up a good sounding remix of an older track, mainly why I don’t really respect remixing old tracks even though I understand why its done (I especially don’t like that SF remixes appear so commonly but oh well).
SFIV does have some good original music. Along with pretty average ones. SFV is probably on the same track, will have some good sounding stuff amongst a bunch of crap.
And while I like the Tekken Tag 2 soundtrack was pretty weak by Tekken standards. Back in the day Namco killed it with the Tekken tracks, but as with most companies their original stuff nowadays doesn’t have quite the same punch.
Juri’s theme was like multiple different themes stuck together without much reason, and some random screams added to distract you from that. If it just stuck to one of the themes and expanded on it, it might have been okay, but it just feels like a mess as it is.
Like some people have said in this thread, it isn’t hard to remix something that was already good. Not that I don’t enjoy SFV’s remixes (I love 'em). Most of the songs I enjoy from SFIV are also remixes. The vanilla character select theme and Ultra’s theme/main menu are some of the only originals I like.
If we’re talking only originals, btw, then I can easily see SFV surpassing SFIV (really not hard). The themes for the new characters will really help dictate the direction SFV’s soundtrack is going, even if just a little. I love the main menu theme, though.
What themes? I think the chaotic sound fits the character perfectly. And the screams only happen during a transition in tempo, maybe pointless but I don’t find it distracting tbh.
