Not trying to be a jerk here. But maybe you should restrain these kinds of comments to fighting games if you don’t play other genres? Classical composers, rock musicians, etc. make most of the music for RPG and strategy games out there. And, honestly, most of the SF music can’t even compete with those games’ menu themes, let alone in-game music.
I do play lots of other genres of games and I do have lost of other favorites, but none can hold a candle to Gen’s A3 theme for me. Different tastes, maybe?
Maxie got pulled into this lol. Fella was dope back in the day, he was in some hype beat tournaments too. Him and kariu always had compositions on lock for some reason, I think they went to school to learn composition by the way they sound. They have a certain “structure” they follow or make when they do melodies I notice.
I think fighting games should consider some musical routes [except skullgirls and older fighting games they got they own route]
Warhammer 40k
Killer is dead
God of war
FF13
FF12[Eruyt village was so nice imo]
Maybe that weird eh…phantasy star music, had a strange feel to it grew on me though.
Capcom I know how fun it is to make dubstep growls and noises but imo that should not be street fighter’s lane but that’s just my opinion.
Although I must say the character select theme had some very nice melodic breakdowns with the piano and guitar in some points that made me think wow, ken’s theme is nice.
Imo character select should be something else as melodic, sf5 sounds too close to sf4’s route.
Now, these are really great Daemos!
And it’s not a coincidence (I swear) that my favourite SF music is Vega’s theme. And here’s that megadriver cover of it (I headbanged)
Also, I’ve posted this before but I again want to put it. What these guys did to the theme is marvelous. This has been my USF4 menu theme for some time now.
To an extent. The Halo Theme, The Dark Knight, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, etc all have soundtracks that are designed to be epic. Why? Because the stories matter. SF doesn’t value it’s story and it’s fan don’t value the story because it’s a fighting game. Some slick generic beats and stereotypical sounding music is good enough for it, since the majority of players spend time in 2 rounds of 99 second battles. Most people care about the fight, and the gameplay. Rounds end before the tracks even start to get good. Also, in comparison, memorable themes in Street Fighter are few, and are still not comparable to say, Darth Vader’s March, where most of the world would be able to hum the tune.
In other games like RPG’s or epic movies, where story matters, the music is designed to enhance that aspect of the combat, the dialogue, the action, during key pivotal points in the script etc etc. There is a process to designing music, and music isn’t the main priority of Street Fighter, hence why Street Fighter themes are usually not played by orchestras like Video Games Live, and usually reserved to covers or fan tributes. Usually.
Individual character or stage themes are usually designed with the most cliche motif’s in the compositions. Each theme is as generic as it can be. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, all use motifs of their background to the most simplest cliche. Look at the Africa Stage in SFIV, no originality. It’s tribal music.
Taste and preference isn’t an issue when part of the design process when creating content. It’s about combining all elements of art, visual, technical, and sound, to create an immersive experience. Street Fighter has been lacking in music, although there is potential to improve in SFV.
From what I’ve heard so far, nearly all the tracks are pretty good, they’re catchy but still a little uninspired, but I can see myself listening to them when working. It’s a step in a better direction, and I wonder what else they’re planning to do.
I think there is a limit to that. As a person who lives with art 24/7, if someone told me that he thinks Britney Spears makes better music than, let’s say, Explosions In The Sky, I would just find that remark funny and think the person lacks musical taste and a basic knowledge of music. There is such a huge musical and creative gap between them that even comparing them is just silly and unfair to Britney. The same goes for SF music vs RPG, Strategy music as you make such a comparison when you say “the best game music ever”. In a world where the themes for games like Diablo 2, Heroes 5, Baldur’s Gate, Elder Scrolls, Civilization, The Witcher 2, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc. exist, SF music can only be called “cheap but fun”.
And I’m actually OK with it being cheap and fun. It’s supposed to be that way. But comparing it to those great game soundtracks is going for an abject humiliation for SF music.
True. I hate it when you call out music or art for being shitty when they evidently are, and then comes along someone with and inability to formulate his/her own opinion or counter your argument, and they pull the ‘‘well art is subjective’’ card. I just want to give those people a good double slap.
Capcom making great music era is long over. Their soundtracks are mediocre at best across the board since like the beginning of last gen. Accept it and move on. 3s Ibuki theme will never be topped.
long are gone the days where capcom took risks in term of audio direction, now everything is formatted and has to be in a certain way, you can hear it when something is overproduced/mixed and too directed, and thats where SFV music is going, that dosnt mean that it will sucks, i can appreciate that when its well made, but like everyone i prefer the more jazzy/hip hop/street style of direction from the early games
SF4 had some really good stage theme, and some of the character themes are beautifully remade, my favorites being Makoto’s and Ibuki’s, the problem is the electro/house side seemed forced rather than natural, the orchestral attempt was very hard to swallow too, that was probably the worst side for me, i cant stand guile theme with a violins sections for example, electronic music rarely stand time ( outside of masterpieces ), its a very risky ( short term, not well though, generic ) direction considering how fast it can get boring, its one of the most fast evolving style sonically
You’re forgetting one little thing - the music you listed above is from the English dub version, which had an entirely different guitar-influenced soundtrack, while the original version had more orchestral approach
I mean I was obviously referring to the English Dub OST by John D’ Andrea and Cory Lerios. The Japanese OST is atrocious in contrast to their work. I usually prefer the original dub music but in this case, SF2AM is exceptional.
