The music is (barely) passable (Music Discussion Thread)

Can you elaborate?

What’s there to elaborate on? I don’t think it gets much more self-explanatory than that.

MK has always had shitty music. No one remembers any songs from any of the games, the only song people remember from MK is that “MAWWRAWWL CAWMBAAGGH” techno song from one of the movies. The games have always had an atmospheric soundtrack that conveys a general mood of darkness, instead of character or location. No one remembers the games for their music, they remember them for the fatalities and nothing else.

With how you just criticized KI’s music, I was expecting something more.

I agree with you on the general mood of the music but I’m not with you on the music being unmemorable. I remember many tracks from the MK series. The majority of MK9’s music was pure nostalgia for fans of the series. When some of the tracks were leaked before the game came out I played them for a friend without telling him beforehand what stages they were remixes/rearrangements for. For every track he wondered for a second or two but then when the beat dropped he knew and was filled with joy. Living Forest is probably the most memorable, and has been redone twice so far.

The problem with MKX is not only is the music actually not memorable(there was no attempt made at all to spark nostalgia), it hardly even sounds like Mortal Kombat music. The only music that stands out to me as “Mortal Kombat” is Destroyed City.

Also, the MK movie theme music is memorable only because it’s so overplayed. It’s annoying how overplayed it is.

I still remember and like several tracks from older MK games. With the newer MK games, I can barely even hear the music and don’t really remember what they sound like as a result.

I hope SF5 doesn’t end up being like that because a lot of the music from SF gets me pumped and more into the game.

MK 1, 2, 3, Deadly Alliance, partially Deception - all had great soundtracks
Yes they may not be as memorable as, say, Ryu’s theme from SF2, but they ARE good

I still hold the opinion that 3S had the absolute best music for a fighting game. Thematical and upbeat(except for ibuki’s stage ya know). The weird part about SFIV is that while a lot of it’s tracks were ass, there were a few really good ones in there. Deserted temple is fantastic and sakura’s theme is rearranged very well. Too bad that’s just the minority of tracks though. Seems like not a lot of you guys are digging the V tracks. We’ve only heard them a few times and they’ve been mostly obscured by the voices and SFX. I like what I hear though, seems more instrumental…but ACTUAL instrumental not just high quality MIDI sounds(which still sound like shit).

No they didn’t. Are you trolling me? I literally can’t remember a single song from any of those games, and I defy anyone who isn’t a biased MK fanboy to tell me they had any memorable songs.

TBH I feel the older MK music done by Dan Forden is much more memorable than most of the SFIV and post SFIV stuff.

Yeah SFV’s music for me is kinda bleh so far. It seems like they’re trying to make it a bit dynamic by having it change in between rounds, but it’s nothing I would be like bumping in headphones like 3S or CVS1 music. The London stage theme doesn’t convey anything that makes you feel you’re fighting in London and just generally doesn’t make you feel anything. It’s just there with some guitars and such.

I kid you not, I am scouring my brain trying to think of a single track I remember from Mortal Kombat that isn’t the techno song and I’m drawing a total blank. I’m trying to associate them with the MK stages I do remember (the acid pool, that purple place, Goro’s Lair, the forest with all the faces, Shang Tsung’s temple, the red portal with all the floating monks) and I still can’t remember ANY of the music from those areas. Here’s an interesting challenge to this thread, how many people here can remember the music tracks from any of the stages I listed WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP ON YOUTUBE? Go ahead and picture the stage, then try to hum some bars from it. If you can’t, then it’s time to admit MK has shitty music.

I believe the only reason you remember these tracks is because you’re a fan of the series. I have an extremely difficult time remembering any music from those games, whereas even the most casual SF players INSTANTLY recognize Ken’s theme, Guile’s theme, Sagat’s theme and Bison’s theme from SF2. That MKX track you linked just could be from ANY entry in the series, it all sounds exactly the same to me. None of the MK games have any identity to their music and comparing them to SF’s musical heritage is a complete joke.

Honestly I think the only people who recognize any “music” from Mortal Kombat are already fanboys of the series who have made up their minds about the games and don’t respond well to anyone who criticizes MK as being less than perfect.

That also goes for your beloved 3S… literally no one but fan of SF series recognize it.

Stop being so narrow-minded, please.

Not a good example. 3S didn’t exactly have a very large player base so of course only SF fans would have played it. If you’d just be a bit more courageous and try to claim that SF2 has no memorable music, I could just point to the status of Guile’s theme as an internet meme and easily point out how full of shit you are.

Street Fighter’s music regularly gets played by video game cover bands, by digital remixers and even at event shows by huge acts like Video Games Live, who place them up there with truly classic video game soundtracks like Mario, Zelda, Sonic and Final Fantasy. Tell me, does VGL ever do any Mortal Kombat music? No? Hmm, I wonder why that is.

Whoa, I never knew that. I’d love to have heard what their ideal vision would sound like. I liked some tracks in Alpha 3, but I really had to grow into it especially since I was head-over-heels in love with alpha 2’s OST.

I can just look at your posts and point out how full of shit you are as a person.

Good comeback, you sure burned the hell out of me with your grade school “I know you are but what am I” retort. Have yourself a milk bottle.

It’s not a comeback, just an opinion…

Yep, saw it in my research on him. While I’m not a big fan of rock/metal, I’ve loved most of the Iwais’ work. You can definitely tell what he was going for in Alpha 3, but a lot of them just didn’t work for me. My favs being R.Mika, Blanka, Ryu, Charlie, Zangief, Rolento, Chun-Li, and Vega(Claw).

But still, that soundtrack coming from the guy and crew that did Marvel Superheroes, and (my personal favorite) Darkstalkers soundtracks, it was a lil’ disappointing. Though it is funny, 16 yrs later, I’m enjoying the Alpha 3 soundtrack a lil’ (just a lil’) more than back then.

Funny, because he actually nailed the rock/metal sound in X-Men COTA and its soundtrack is pretty memorable (it’s my favorite CPS2-era Marvel OST.)

Here’s an example:

SF2 definitely had the most memorable soundtrack. Everyone across the world knows several of the themes. Which game has the best soundtrack? That is subjective. Though IMO SFIV is pretty bad, some remixes of classic tunes but its own original compositions are forgettable (I can’t even recall any of its tunes as I type this, though I could recall tunes for every other fighting game I’ve ever owned)

So sad Yoko isn’t interested in making music in fighting games anymore, however the Okugawa/Iwai team would be a dream duo that should produce an amazing SFV soundtrack. Or maybe Capcom can do some scouting and find a lesser known unsigned rock band to do the music or something. This ambigious forgettable stuff is disappointing.

I’d rather have music I like as a separate piece of art than something that sets the setting for the game. Let’s face it, 99% of the time your just going to be grinding and not thinking “wow I hope Ryu finally defeats bison” so it’s not that important for the music to reflect that.

I don’t have the emotional stamina to spend 1000 hours in a hype movie trailer. it just needs to be pleasing to listen to.

I like the song for Drive Through at Night.
