to give credit to Capcom 3s has some good tracks, hell even CVS2 is growing on me, SFIV and Alpha 3 are down right horrendous. Most of the time people don’t give music a chance specially true when you’re not used to the genre. I criticized capcom’s music alot after SFII but going back to play those games actually it’s not true there are some good tracks though overall Capcom ost’s have been bad since world warrior.
also GG music and ASW music is too much guitar Synth in every song, that kind of makes the overall OST a little dull.
When it comes to old Fighting game OSTs nobody can touch SNK IMO. They have the most variety out of the 3
Well Guilty Gear IS supposed to be all about rock and stuff, so obviously the soundtrack would accompany that theme going on in the series, with some slight exceptions like Slayer’s theme in Xrd
BlazBlue though did a good job of combining guitars and orchestral instruments, like Rachel’s theme
KOF 13, on the other hand… Yeah, it has a pretty interesting OST. Not exactly to my liking, but it is diverse
And the original is still better. It’s just one of those themes where the instruments and everything they had access to at the time happened to be what was perfect for the theme itself. Hard to improve on what’s already optimal.
Hard to say. Always a possibility they asked and she declined. Easier to do a mix of one or two songs you’ve already done rather than an entire new Soundtrack, maybe she doesn’t want to go through all of that again.
noted I said “old” kof XIII OST can’t compare to the likes of KOF 2000, KOF96 or even KOF 95. KOF XIII is their best work since they went bankrupt but still it doesn’t compare to the old stuff.
If I understand her thoughts from interviews I’ve read, she doesn’t want to do that kinda music anymore. She worked on Final Fight, and when given the choice, she chose to compose for SF2 which was a surprise. But she has always, ALWAYS preferred to do more symphonic/orchestra arranged type music better suited for RPGs – it’s her style. This is why when she left Capcom, she essentially only worked on composing music for RPGs like Super Mario RPG, Parasite Eve, some Final Fantasy tracks, and most notably, most if not all songs for Kingdom Hearts, and Kingdom Hearts 2. She’s also gone on record to say that her favorite song that she has EVER composed, is Dearly Beloved, the main theme to the Kingdom Hearts series.
I personally would want them to bring back Takayuki Iwai, his wife Yuki Iwai (both left and created Wavelink Zeal who did some R-Type soundtracks), and Hideyuki Okugawa (who did all 3 SF3 soundtracks).
The Iwais and Okugawa collaborated and did the sound tracks to Marvel Superheroes, and Darkstalkers. They also did Alpha 3, though as much as I love their work, isn’t all the best example of how great they are. Takayuki Iwai actually wanted to redo the sound system for Alpha 3 and make it more rock/metal based, but didn’t have the funding to redo the soundboard, so he had to do with what he could. That probably explains why I have always felt that Alpha 3’s soundtrack was lacking something and he went too heavy and over the top with snare drums and hi-hat loops.
After hearing what Takayuki Iwai did with Darkstalkers, and Okugawa with SF3, and what they do together, by far, they were the best team to do great fighting game soundtracks for Capcom and would pray for them to come back. Or for Capcom to hire any of the 3 composers who did the soundtracks to the 3 Killer Instinct games. THAT, would be a dream!
People hate on the soundtrack for being rap/hip hop, yet when you listen to it, you realize that it actually has a wide range of diverse styles and influences.
To this day, Kobu is still my favorite Ryu theme, not his original one from SFII.
One thing I noticed with the music so far in SFV is that both stages have no identity musically. It all sounds very “canned” and default. Nowhere close to 3rd Strike, so I don’t see the comparisons.
I was disappointed with MKX’s music also. That same flat, undefined feeling I get from SFV’s music so far. It’s unfortunate because a great videogame soundtrack does leave an impression on players. When select a stage, it’s largely dictated by its background music.
Funny thing is, Hideyuki Fukusawa, who did IV’s soundtrack, also did work for III, specifically his first known work as the arrange version of Gill’s theme, Judgement Day [heavy tone]. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPWwAG_mFfc
IMO, he’s probably held back by a combination of being forced to remix alot of old themes, and using a specific, overproduced style for all of IV’s songs.
Oh wooooow, don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that. Respect your opinion on it, and I kinda see it – his 3S theme does fit him well, and better than the first 2 songs from SF3 he was given, though I still like SF32I soundtrack more than 3S, by far. For one thing, I never liked the whole “sharing stages and songs” thing from 3S.
Both songs are diverse, are hype, and pump…even ‘Warlord’ hits hard where you can get into the bass and basslines. Like I said, ‘Warlord’ alone completely sh**s on most of SF4’s songs, or character “remixes.”
No, like I said, those songs are better-produced than they are composed. Yeah, the bass-lines and beats and everything are very crisp and sharp (which is more of a production thing), but the melodies themselves (the compositions) aren’t very original or interesting.
Compare those to their old themes, which have worse production but better composition. The advantage is that they’re way more catchy and ear-wormy as a result. You might find yourself humming them hours later. I don’t get that with Mick’s themes.
Ehhh, you have a point. I’ll admit, there are a few tracks in the new KI that Mick Gordon did that I couldn’t tell you what the melody is, and aren’t memorable. The 2 I posted are ones that stand out the most to me.
