I think Machida’s TDD and spacing is just that good. People will do the usual MMAth thing and think because Shogun beat Machida twice with his striking (Technically once, but general consensus says Rua won their first fight, w/e) that Bones would wreck Machida because Bones demolished Shogun on his feet. IMO this does not compute, as the Bones/Machida fight would look nothing like either of the Shogun/Machida fights.
IMO, Lyoto’s fight vs Jones would be closer to his fight with Rampage (even though Jones and Rampage are on completely different levels in terms of ground game) because I don’t see Jones being able to bring Machida down. It boils down to how good you think Machida’s TDD is, and I think Machida has the best TDD in the LHW division atm. After Bones gets a TD or two stuffed, it should turn into a striking battle. Shogun’s striking style is perfectly suited for Bones, while I believe Machida’s striking style is the most frustrating one for Jones to face.
If you rewatch this last fight, Jones did a ton of damage to Shogun up close and personal by simply rushing in and clinching. Shogun generally LETS people zone in on him on their feet (ex. Machida, Rampage in pride, etc) because he’s such a devastating counter puncher close range and he has fairly awful TDD because he has a ton of confidence in his BJJ once the fight hits the mat. This was his mistake against Bones and Forrest, when guys have more size than Shogun take advantage of his poor TDD and just SMOTHER him on the ground, that’s when Rua gets gassed trying to keep the big bodies off him, which gives more openings when they’re on their feet. Even if you give Shogun the excuse about his leg that all his fanboys like to give about his first fight with Forrest, I honestly believe Forrest is just the type of fighter that gives Shogun trouble.
Now as for Machida, his whole thing is about spacing. Reach means a lot less to Machida than it does to Shogun because while Rua likes his fights to be in your face the entire time, Machida at his best starts fighting people from 5 feet away. The guy zones people out with his footwork better than anyone I have ever seen in the Octagon. Bones is gonna have a hell of a time chasing Machida around and exerting a lot of energy, because that’s just the kind of aggressive young fighter that he is. Machida will pick his spots to engage and look for the counter. When people rush Machida, they usually get the worst of it. Defensively in terms of striking Machida’s style has the best chance at beating Jones imo. I would love to see that fight happen, I think it would be quite a test for Jones.

machida is able to zone people out bcuz his stance gives longer reach and quicker escape routes than a “normal” stance…2 things that are countered by jones’ speed and freakshow reach.
that said, machida just lost 2 fights in a row, is 35 and has like 3 guys in front of him so i’mma go ahead and say that they’ll never fight (for the title at least).

i kindof agree with galactic, but i dont think machida can stay sharp enough for 5 rounds if he ever gets the title shot on jones
he’ll take damage every round and get worse.
even though hes not 35, he will be close to that by the time they ever might fight. and jones will be a decade younger and also more experienced and an even better fighter.
machida only has a chance if they fight in the next 12 months

In all honesty i really think three is one to many for major knee surgery for shogun,there was no spring even when the fight began and it really broke my pride loving heart to see what Bones did to him.
Buuttttttt i think even shogun at 100% bones would still have won that fight sadly.

rashad who? lol, aint nobody touching jones, he was better than everybody in the ufc last year as far as i can tell. hes a young fuck, so hell only get better unless he gets some sort of injury to stop him. thing is ufc has a lot of good fighters, impressive, no, good yes. jones was the first guy in the ufc octagoin to actually impress me like that, believe me when i tell you i aint impressed that easily (hater fo life). the biggest advantage jones got over them other fighters, he can actually use his head. that alone is better than any of the other ufc fighters. he might seem a lil fragile and skinny (legs) but the guy is hard, explosive, fast and smart as a fighter, and hes got the stamina of a horse. you need a true heavywieght like overeem or silva just to stand a chance against this type of fighter. them other fighters in his weightclass straight up screwed, they aint beating shit.
