I’ve found out today that the key to the Rose matchup is being patient, not pressing buttons, and beating U2 with a meaty slide.
I’ve never had a meaty slide beat U2 do her orbs spawn randomly? Because I swear I’ve tried what you said and always fail miserably at it.
They might spawn randomly, I don’t know. When it beat it, it traded (which is good enough for me). And if she jumps at you while she has orbs ex guac right through them.
Anyone have tips on how to fight Sim? I honestly have no idea what to do against him (yes I’ve looked at OP and I still suck at the matchup). It’s just so rare that I play against good Sim’s, so I don’t know the matchup. I’m having better luck fighting Sim with Viper.
I’ve played with Rose’s U2 a lot and meaty slide will never beat U2 on activation (trade and beat aren’t the same thing just FYI). If you do a meaty slide and she activates U2 it will lose to EX drill, super, back dash > whatever (will avoid then punish), or just a simple block will be enough. It will trade with the orb if she does just about anything else and I believe she can escape if she does EX soul throw and one orb might still hit you.
The two most reliable things I’ve found to make the U2 disappear are tortilla and ambiguous crossup HP. They are not guaranteed however, she can jump or back dash out of tortilla then punish (sometimes) and if she blocks the HP correctly she gets a free soul throw after you get juggled by an orb.
The best things to do imo is to just run up in her face just out of throw range and block both orbs on activation or just run away. I’ve tried absorbing both with an EX run but that ended horribly the couple of times I tried it. I have some more remarks about the safe tortilla vs U2 a few pages back, check those out.
Funny you should ask this, since I’ve been having quite a few games with a 20,000BP (4500PP) Dhalsim recently, and it’s really helped. I find Dhalsim to be Elf’s hardest match-up, without a doubt.
Here’s some things I learnt:
Don’t be over active in this match, you’re just going to eat a cr.hp for good damage. Just stay back, build meter and don’t press buttons. All Sim players want to do is hit you with one cr.hp and run away for the rest of the game. Don’t give them that chance. Focus through the ones you see coming, and stay out of range of the ones you don’t.
Instant air teleports can be punished with standing or crouching hard punch if you’re quick enough to react. Obviously this’d be easier offline than online, but it’s still possible. However, if there’s a fireball on the screen, he’s going for his IAT (instant air teleport) crossup mixup, and you won’t be able to HP him out of his teleport without getting hit by the fireball. In this situation, either neutral jump, and punish the cross-up on the way down, or if you’re sure the IAT is coming, EX run out for mix-ups, or to safety. You can even use the QCF>QCF>PP>KKK option select to punish with U1 at this point if you see it comin’.
On Sim’ wake-up, slide is a good bet, since you can beat backdash and throw him out of his backwards teleports (work particularly well after a corpse hop). Once you get him afraid to teleport, the match is yours.
Another few pointers:
-
If Sim slides you, he’s going to throw you. Be sure to tech, or neutral jump punish.
-
Try not to jump in or splash unsafely, since you’ll probably eat a full super.
-
If Sim jumps in empty, don’t use U2, since he can teleport away right before he lands.
-
Guac can beat stretchy arms out of the air.
-
Don’t focus through fireballs in cr.hp range, otherwise you’ll receive damage for both of those attacks.
That’s all I can think of right now.
no offence dude, but on the contrary, Sim is one of Fuerte’s easiest matchups. Granted, it’s a little harder in Super due to his buffed damage and the presence of Ultra 2, but it’s definitely Fuerte’s to lose.
In essence, knock him down and the game should be over.
Some little pointers for the matchup:
-
After a knockdown, j.fp OS f.mk. if he back teleports, you’ll shower kick towards him and be able to grab him as he recovers from the teleport.
-
stuff all teleports with lk guac or c.fierce
-
play cautious when he has super. build your own meter. make it so that one ex run through his limbs will lead to a knockdown, which will lead to death.
-
tortilla is your friend. you can grab him if he tries to backdash, air grab/guac if he tries to jump out. if he tries jump xx teleport to evade your initial punish, just wait for him to come out of the teleport before punishing him.
-
after tortilla, whiff s.lk xx tortilla held forward, f.mk is perfect meaty shower kick timing.
-
tortilla, buffer ultra. if he teleports backwards, just press 3k. (ultra 1)
-
get him in the corner. mix up tortilla, f.mk and meaty slide. this limits so many of his options. add in a drop kick from time to time in the corner if he tries to jump out. juggle with lk guac.
in essence, you should beat a Sim if you have the life lead, and if you’re rushing him down. avoid being trapped in the corner with no ex meter and you should be good to go.
hope this helps.
No offense? Lol.
Why would I take offense that you find the Sim match easy? That’s cool. We all have different match preferences.
I agree with what you posted, but a good Sim isn’t going to let you knock him down for free. You can only play the wake-up game once you’re in, and getting in is a bitch. Not sure of the quality of the Sim’s you’ve been fighting if you think this match is easy, but for me, it definitely isn’t.
I definitely feel what I posted is of value to anyone wanting some info on the match-up.
ok, so I’m a total El Fuerte noob, Just picked him up two days ago (been maining ryu in vanilla and Cody in SSF4). I find el fuerte extremely fun to play and am really happy with the switch.
Although Im having trouble with the RSF (obviously). The problem is that I do the input correctly in term of the buttons I press, (I know this from training mode and looking at my input) but the problem is that usually after doing Fierce-run-stop-fierce, the next thing that happens is that a Fajita buster throw comes out, instead of the fierce punch. Am I pressing Fierce to soon? or what’s happening? cause I AM pressing the run-stop-fierce buttons, but for some reason, the stop does not come out on the third Fierce attempt.
And when it DOES come out, Fuerte is too far away so he does the non-cancelable far standing fierce punch.
any help with this is appreciated!
Thanks a lot!
i don’t care what the tier lists say this matchup is definitely one of my most difficult. When dhalsim has super it really shuts down doing anything even remotely risky since it does SO much damage. Dhalsim’s air options also greatly limit punishing with Ultra. I still do not know which Ultra I would rather go with in this matchup, it really depends on what kind of Dhalsim I play which I will not always now of ahead of time at a tourney.
Second to Seth, almost.
I play Xian, the Dhalsim from Singapore that took 2nd place at Dreamhack last year, on a regular basis.
Here’s a match of him against Zak, from the UK too I believe:

But yeah I do agree with you that getting in’s a bitch, but realizing that once you get in, it’s over for him, makes the match up seem much more manageable for me since all you need is that one chance. Maybe you could tell me specific stuff that you’re having trouble with and I’ll see if I can help.
And yea of course what you posted has value to anyone wanting info on the match up dude, we’re all here to help each other.
Sounds like you’re cancelling the run too fast (run stop is three frames, you can’t just spam light punch twice). Try slowing it down a little.
That’s a good Sim.
I guess the main problem I have with Sim are his teleport shenanigans. Sometimes I just not ready to cr.fp a teleport. It’s not a natural reaction yet, since I barely ever get to play against Sim, and the ones I do play against are usually really great players.
As I said, the recent matches have helped my confidence a lot in the Sim match, but I could still quite easily be perfected by a good Sim if I have a bad match.
From my experience with Dhalsim, a lot of his strategy tends to come from his teleporting and stretchy arm schenanigans. Generally, whenever I fight Dhalsim I tend to watch how he jumps around and how he throws his strecth attacks at me.
I think the best tactic to him is figure out how punish him while he’s in the air. You might want to practice countering his A.HP with a guac since that’ll make him much, much more cautious with how he he uses which is good for you and bad for him. Of course, there’s numerous other little things you can do to counter him in the air such as aerial throw and certain wall jumps attacks. Personally, I think that A.MK and a splash is recommended since they have great priority against his attacks.
Dhalsim has this knee attack that most of them seem to rely on as anti-air. This isn’t a problem for Fuerte, however, because a good splash or A.MK will easily counter it and leave him vulnerable. Among other moves he has a standing stretch kick{S.HK I think} but this isn’t too threating at all so long as you come at him at the right angle and speed. A good wall jump splash can do the trick.
The main annoyance I have with Dhalsim is his teleporting shenanigans. Of course, I think goes without saying to Focus Attack him wheneven he teleports down on you and tries to attack you. However, you could use other tricks like Ex Guac or pretty much any attack from an EX Run to catch him off guard. Chances are, he will teleport away from you if you try to rush him down. No problem. Just keep on him and you’ll win.
His U1 really isn’t problem since you can easily counter it with any ultra with no risk if he goes up close and tries to chip damage you with or for any other reason. I think anything else he does with it is kinda self-explanatory in terms of avoiding it. U2, however, is a bit more problematic since Dhalsim can use it to counter your wall jumps and maybe even during your splash recoveries. So when Dhalsim has this ultra, watch what you’re doing or else you’ll get punished.
Overall, not a bad match-up for Fuerte but can be tricky if you don’t know how to fight him.
Now this isn’t true. A competent Dhalsim will throw this out early enough when they knock you down and space out to bait an EX-guac. Not going for EX-guac to escape means that they can do block traps to make you eat some ultra damage. Doing Ex-Guac may mean eating a couple fierce punches or combo to super. Fuerte’s light health means you can go from life lead to KO in one guess.
Plus without a fireball and Dhalsim’s long limbs make it very difficult to keep EX bar to EX run through stretchy pokes. In my matches it is a 50/50 matchup as to whoever is having the better day and can frusturate the other player mentally with some mind tricks.
For dhalsim I think patience is key. FA his long range ground pokes. Not like he’s gonna combo. Take your time. Once he leaves an opening strike quickly. Keep him down as long as possible. Then go back to being patient.
This makes it easy to spot patterns and setups.
Thats some awesome Dhalsim matchup info guys, too bad I still can’t find a proper Dhalsim player to practice it. In a way it seems a bit similar to Guile in terms of general strategy, as in being patient and then not letting go once you score a knockdown.
I believe both Guile and Dhalsim are listed as 6-4 matchups for Fuerte, and the reasoning on that is mainly based on how Fuerte can really mess them up once knocking them down, as both really lack proper ways of escaping pressure. They are definitely not free though, both have the ability to keep you away if they play it smart, and sim seems a bit harder due to his teleport shenanegins that could be confusing for a while before getting used to them (though Fuerte definitely has a much easier time getting in compared to other characters that simply suffer against those two).
EDIT: I find it hard to land either U1 or U2 in this matchup, any recommendation on which is better to use? my guess is U1 since U2 just seems a bit too fast in punishing a slow character like Sim and whiff as a result.
thank you for the tip. will try it out in practice mode today.
also, I found out in practice mode, I dont know if everybody knows this already (since Im new to the fuerte party) but I noticed that if you play a ryu who likes to jump fierce, c.mk xx firebal/hurricane kick (which a lot of them do). If you block the j.fierce you have enough time to start an ex-run in between the j.fierce and c.mk. Which means you can do super armor kara canel into super on ryu after blocking his j.fiere. If you expect him to c.mk afterwards this is a good punish.
But j.fp>cr.mk is a link. The only way you’ll be able to do that is if he missed the link, otherwise you’ll be in block stun. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying that maybe the Ryu messed up his link.
It may work in between the blocked cr.mkxxhadouken, though, since that sometimes doesn’t combo on block.
ah ic. if it’s not natural reaction yet, practicing your anti airs in training mode helps, aka setting the training dummy to doing IAT stuff and you practicing c.fierce/guac. just ingrain it in your muscle memory to anti air any teleport and you should be fine. And if it’s too risky, ex run back stop works well too.
I’m currently leaning towards ultra 1 because of its superior horizontal range to ultra 2. you can punish teleports and errant flash kicks after a safe tortilla immediately with the giga buster. i say go with whatever you’re most comfortable with though.
and yeah, exactly.
Like I said, any other method self-explanatory method of evasion ought to be used. I think that the block trap is an issue for pretty much everyone, so I’d think any method of avoiding that would apply to Fuerte as well. Personally, this rarely ever happens to me since Dhalsim doesn’t usually get the chance to do it against me. Of course, in such a case I think blocking or jumping away at the appropriate time is the solution to this. Also, if positioned Right, you can easily counter this with an granted you have it.
In my experience, I’ve never had a problem with the U1. I guess that’s just me though.
The thing is, though, the fireballs are very punishable. If you play well enough, you can easily counter the fireballs with a normal splash or some other random method of aerial attack. I tend to punish fireball spamming Dhalsim’s pretty badly so most of them {who are good} are much more considerate of how they use them.
