The Martial Arts Movie Thread 2017 Donnie hates his fans

Also it is confirmed that Antonio Banderas will be in The Expendables 3. John Woo hinted at wanting to direct the movie, only if he could have creative control. Granted it isn’t strictly martial arts movie news, it has hints of it, lol.

Saw this over at Budomate. Pretty interesting.
An exploitation movie that is basically strictly Fighting. Interesting stuff.

A great read on the evolution of collecting martial arts movie. It is full of some information.

My dad was a huge Martials Arts & Western movie buff…So that’s what we watched all the time…He was also into getting the latest things, so we actually had 2 VCR’s, 2 Betamax, Laserdisc, & a Sony 24" Monitor TV. We did a lot of renting & recording in the 80s. I believe i still have an original Monkey Kung Fu on betamax. During the early 90s, i continued the trend myself & bought real expensive Tai Seng Videos that cost like $80. Luckily i was able to find a foreign video rental place that had a lot of the popular John Woo, Jet Li, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark, Jackie Chan films. I used those to record then trade for older kung fu flicks.

Late 90s i pretty much watch a huge chunk of Hong Kong cinema films & decided to go watching the B films. Luckily i found a Vietnamese store that rented asian films but they were dubbed in Vietnamese(very annoying) cool thing is they had asian Category III films, so i got to see the Sex & Zen series & all the other half naked soft core porn haha.

Then 00s i believe the local chain stores started to bring out more kung fu films & dvd was really catching on. Subtitles are visible now haha & prices were cheap.

Then 10s digital download, no need to buy anything anymore unless its an awesome film. I watch all the new movies with my daughter. She’s really into kung fu films, she like the older films more though. Like Bruce Lee & old Jackie movies in the 80s.

Was thinking of upgrading my movies to Bluray but not really sure if its worth it. How do they compare to the DVD movies? Those Dragon Dynasty films are really cheap & was wondering what the quality were on those?

my first steven segal movie…

a one sided final fight scene… i was just the perfect age to apreciate the epical awesomeness of this cheesy master piece…

You know, it would be dope if Sammo Hung did some scenes like he did back in the day. This is one of my favorite scenes he did.

Tell me why she did the Tekken 4-6 ko animation lol.

They aren’t too bad. There is usually a widescreen setup that allows you to see more of the scene. If you check out DDDhouse.com then you can basically find anything you want for a good price. I like to check out enthusiast blogs where they give in depth reviews on bluray releases. My favorite right now is cityonfire.com, a good place to find reviews

They say that Rothrock was the model for King in the Art of Fighting series.

Question: if they decided to remake The Last Dragon, who do you think should play Bruce Leroy and Sho Nuff?

Sammo was by far the best Bruce Lee impersonator…Enter the Fat Dragon Yo! Last fight w/ Beardy was dope!

keeanu reeve’s new martial art movie(man of taichi) was goofy as fuck

I cant believe he still cant deliver like 2 lines without sounding like he’s reading a script/poem or some shit lol…

Oh I guess you didn’t hear the rumor from a couple of years ago huh? LOL!!! There was a remake on the table starring Chris Brown and Rihanna with Shonuff being played by Sam Jackson. If that still goes thru, expect a heavyset black man going on a rampage in the news. LOL!!!

Chris Brown? Ugh… They tried to have his tall ass do parkour in Takers and it was terrible.

lmao that facebook page Scott Atkins for Batman made it into my local paper - http://www.suttoncoldfieldobserver.co.uk/Thousands-backing-Sutton-s-Man-Steel-Batman-bid/story-19605679-detail/story.html

If there was a person who could physically portray a man capable of beating up Superman, it would be Scott Adkins.

his parkour is fine…he actually has martial arts tricking pretty decent. but then again his cousin is realllly fucking good at tricking.

But Chris Brown can’t act. I’d much rather see an unknown (indie circuit anyone) with decent martial arts and acting get cast instead of Chris fucking Brown. I am almost certain that there is a black British dude who can act and has skills to play Leroy. Plus they can hide accents pretty well lol.

I really dont mind remakes, sometimes they even are on par with original but i really cant see how Last Dragon can work. Biggest problem is the 80s cheese, this what makes it a classic/charm that you can watch over an over.

Now if they go with Dragon Returns or something like that where Bruce Leroy got a son. Then set it to modern time it might work…

i think thats personal taste…im not chris breezy fan by any stretch of the imagination but im not about to let my feelings for the dude cloud my judgement on his skills. and he has far better acting skills then most of these dudes making dough on the big screen. i wouldnt be mad at all.

It’s not that about me liking or disliking him. It’s that everything I have seen him in has been mediocre at best. it’s like they would cast him on name and not skill. Yeah he can do some tricking and dude can dance, but it would be really hard to see him in the role as a martial artist (like Jaylen Smith in the Karate Kid). It’s like the whole movie would be people thinking “so Chris Brown just took out a bus load of niggas with one punch? come on son”. Plus I’d just like to see some new talent, you know? It’s like don’t put someone in something just for the sake of their celebrity.

Well if you look at director Ti West (indie horror director). He did a film that felt like it was straight out of the 80’s and it worked extremely well. I would say it could be done, but you would need the right person. Michael Jai White did a great job with Black Dynamite and that is a modern piece. I think if you took it and gave it a slightly darker feel, it could be something really dope. I’d like to see the director of Drive take a crack at like a dark, serious martial arts movie.

Oh I got an "advanced copy of Man of Thai Chi. Bout to watch it in a bit.
