The Martial Arts Movie Thread 2017 Donnie hates his fans

He is a huge fanboy. Well also for Van Damme and any MA actor that isn’t Asian lol.

He also says Undisputed has the best cinematography out of all MA movies. I don’t think so necessarily. It’s good but nothing exceptional.

Better than The Raid 1&2? Those films were some of the few that didn’t feel so corny when watching them. Cinematography wise Gareth Evans is changing the way MA films are being shot. Undisputed was okay, but it still had this weird corniness over it. Don’t get me wrong I love the films, but its was okay cinematography wise.

Final fight vs final fight. Raid 2 was just better, it just felt more to the point. Also I thought Zaror really put in work in that film. Really enjoyed his fights.

Yeah your friend may need to think about that.

New movie coming out on December 11, I couldn’t find the trailer on youtube so link to facebook video instead. The fight scenes in the trailer look a bit vague, some even seem a little slow, but still looks promising.

yeah i wanted to post the trailer for that but couldn’t find a direct link. Looks pretty decent.

I think it just came out this weekend in China.

edit: am guessing this isnt the Pou-Soi Cheang flick then lol? Too much damn movies called the master getting released atm.

its because Gareth tells a story in each moment of the fight. films look corny/low budget because they aren’t telling a detailed story.

I didn’t like that banshee fight, great effort but it feels corny because the story telling is immature. jackie chan was able to pull of stuff like that because they had the time to fine tune it with the detail in fighting that was around during the previous decade (im talking late 80’s/90’s chan having influence by late 70’s early 80’s story telling in fights) plus he had his added layers of film making unique expertise. this is why its world class folks

Man that Banshee fight was fucking brutal…The show itself is fucking amazing.

There are some awesome fights w/ very shit story, for example anything w/ Tony Jaa…Fuck those elephants.

I started watching Banshee before it’s second season. Cinemax was hyping the fuck oout the show so I was like let me look at it on my Fios On Demand and felt bad I didn’t look at the first season when it came on. One of my favorite fight scenes, while short, was when Hood fought Jason Statham. LOL!!!

I’m one of the few that never agreed with Jackie, Jet, etc.

That the fight is Much better because of the story. To some extent yes. But there are some fight scenes that you can watch alone and it’s always epic (via good fight choreography, good performance, etc.)

I think when you inject story into the fight scene it makes the audience more invested and adds more production value (looks like they put thought into it.) But if the choreo is boring and they move slow or it’s a fight that’s been done before = engaging story don’t mean shit.

It’s a good combo of both essentially.

so people think im talking about the overall story contributing towards the fighting? NO, well yeah that too. but its the pacing, cinematography, and non verbal realism the characters convey that helps create great choreography. you’re not meant to rely on choreography, the choreography is supposed to be the map for the actors to bring out the neurological truth of the situations.

hey, it was fun to watch, but its not on the level of Hong Kongs best, for these reasons.

thank god I watched other fight scenes in that show

this is more like it! that other fight scene is what we call “a walking corpse” their fighting were martial arts displays, nothing genuine about it

I think a lot of folks understand how to film a fight scene, but don’t understand the aspect of actually making a fight scene captivating. The reason why I mention the kitchen fight scene in Raid 2 is because, it was very to the point, but there was also this underlying tension about how everything was gonna go down. For example we saw Rama and the Assassins first encounter and he got beat. So looking at how Rama was walking in, you could actually question if he would make it out in one piece if at all.

With Undisputed 3, Boyka was getting brutalized by Dolor. There really was no reason why after wrapping his fucked up leg he should have won. It was corny as hell, even though the choreography was great the story telling within the fight gave it that corniness.

I love the old fights, especially stuff Biao, Chan and Sammo were rocking out in the 70’s and 80s.

Look at the fight with Chan and Benny the Jet in Wheels on Meals. Great choreo and great story telling within the fight.

Same with who am I.

the main character Hood in banshee is relying on disguised jkd concepts, ill just tell you that.

this is a great and meaningful fight scene from the 80s era

Such a good scene. I was actually talking with someone about this scene on FB the other day. It feels like a lot of scenes follow a similar formula now that seems to be played out. For example when Jaa first started coming out and gaining popularity, his stuff was new and refreshing. But after Ong Bak 2 you pretty much can see how he just became stagnant. I wasn’t hype for him in Skin Trade and he was pretty much a waste in Fast and Furious 7. I am worried that sticking Iko Uwais with Ronda Rousey in that new movie may be kind of bad. Ronda is bae status for sure, but her acting in Fas and Furious was fucking terrible. I wouldn’t mind for her being this generation’s Cynthia Rothrock though, but she most definitely would need to shadow some of the vets imo.

I agree.

You also made me realize how important TENSION. Is in a fight scene.

I never saw any tension in an undisputed fight scene. When someone gets hurt I don’t feel it. There’s no suspense in the fight scene, I’m just watching superman steamroll people with fun moves.

If you look at Who Am I, Mortal Kombat, Fist of Legend… You see a lot of tension going on there. Even if you’ve seen it before and know who wins, the exchanges are chunky and it feels like each hit is earned.

Shifting gears, my friend who is making it in the industry as a fight performer (same guy who idolizes Scott Adkins and says undisputed has the best fight cinematography.)

He told me the other day after working a gig:

Ah filming a fight scene is easy. Just do low angles and show a tree in the background. Just hold the camera while the actors do the hard stuff.

I wanted to slap him. That’s an insult to every cinematographer who made a fight look superb.

This is the same guy who getting successful, where I asked him “hey let’s do some choreography and put a move in that’s never been filmed before.” He goes “Oh I got an idea, I’ll do a handstand, catch your head with legs and throw you.” Face palm. I said “Like Sonya Blade in 1995?”

Your friend is funny, lol.

I have been studying how to film fight scenes for a while. There is sooooo much that goes into it. Especially if you are going to have cuts and multiple takes. Only scenes that made a one take go smoothly was the hallway scene in Oldboy (as well as Daredevil to an extent) and True Detective in the projects.

With Oldboy it felt very realistic in regards to not being flashy. But I feel you with these fights. When Rama’s leg got cut by the Assassin in the kitchen fight, everyone in the theater was like “oh fuck”.

Actually check out how easily Evans gets the idea out about how he wants the scene to look. So good.

This scene from when they break into the apartment. This is what tension on film looks like when executed perfectly.

Thoughts on this list? I am a bit disappointed in it honestly. Some were cool but a lot of em were based off of popularity.

Also what are your thoughts on this scene? The movie was complete garbage, but this scene showed that Ben Foster can follow basic choreography and has decent acting range. I mean he was nuts in Hostage and The Mechanic. I wish they would do a bit more with him. Like play rival hitman in John Wick 2?

Sorry for all the posts. Been a while since I’ve really been posting stuff.

This comes out Aug 25th. I’ll be copping for sure.
