The MarsGatti Farewell/Peace Out Thread

Yeah the 32X was really no good. A home version of ST means nothing to me since I thought throwing 37908273487 fireballs meant I was going to win at that point in my life… if I had played any one any good at all in ST at that point in my life i never would have played fighting games again…

Fair enough on the Neo Geo… but it doesn’t matter what the specs are if no one can afford it (a.k.a. early release of PS3… Sony… what were you thinking back then???)

And Super Mario RPG…good, not great, gets more hype because of who’s in it rather than any real innovation… but to their credit, Square did all they could with the Mario Franchise and made what should have been an awful game a solid B+ / A-… but not in the conversation for greatest RPG of all time. IMO

Shari - you look totally different than I imagined (I was thinking blonde). THANKS FOR RUINING MY IMAGINATION! So, like, best SF themes? I’ll start:

I wanted to reply to this with a bunch of hate, but I can’t. You’re right, without the Mario characters SMRPG wouldn’t have been that great. Thing is, it did though. So SMRPG was fantastic! I’d say it was in the top 3 of at least SNES RPGs.

Chrono Trigger… now there’s a game that’s overrated.

Some Rugby players are supposed to be strong but fast, others can rely more on strength. The attackers are required to be as fast as possible while still having enough physical strength to endure the tackles they will receive. They need both speed and acceleration, so they can outrun the defenders or avoid them, in case they are on the way.

As for soccer, players are required to have mainly 2 among 3 characteristics: skill, speed and strength. Being relatively tall, such as Italian and (mainly) German professional players, helps when attempting to score with the head or defend against it, but it is mostly not required unless you are a center-back. That aside, players can have pretty much any body type, from skinny to muscular, short to tall. Only fat people are rare in professional play as extra fat tissue offers only disadvantages in the game: being harder to be pushed does not offset the acceleration, speed and stamina that one misses due to being bigger but not stronger.

Hehe i bet you did.

Now.

Best SF theme is easy.

And you can eat it if you say CT is better than SMRPG.

Part 1 of this commentary showed your wisdom and restraint.

Part 2… I don’t even know what to say. CT is top tier. If in the history of console RPG’s (JRPG’s especailly) there’s maybe 5 that can go onto the all time God Tier List, Chrono Trigger isn’t only on the short list, it’s got to be all but guaranteed a spot… nothing over rated about CT… NOTHING. So in conslusion, not only is CT > than SMRPG, it’s >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SMRPG

Shari: Oh big surprise… he picks the VEGA theme… Musically speaking I actually really like the authenticity of Honda’s music, but Cammy’s theme totally fits her stage too perfectly. The bridge on the old English Castle with the Northern Lights in the background… shoot… bring that weak stuff somewhere else!

(Oh, but I do love Barcelona… Barcelona… there’s a top tier city! If you were going to force me to move away from my beloved Indianapolis, outside the US, I’d pick Barcelona in a heart beat, just be sure when you go looking for newsstands on Las Ramblas that you look at the right side… the left side of the news stand is all imported DVD’s of American Porn… kind of creepy in a way during the middle of the day…)

P.S. I hear Marsgatti was actually cosplaying Guile and was wondering the Colorado Rocky Mountains when he stumbled onto Central Command he introduced himself as Colonel Guile, they let him in, and then he nuked Spain to finally get over the Guile / Vega matchup, any truth to this?

Everyone loves CT but me. I’m kinda used to it. Back when I was in 6th grade it was like half of the gamers aligned with SMRPG and the other side was for CT. Lots of digimon battles ensued to secure bragging rights!

IMO, the frantic, vivid original theme from the CPS-1 has always been the one best suited for Vega. They should just record it again, as close to the original as they can, with a good classic or flamenco guitar player who is descent with tremolo, for the base, and some other for the slower, main theme. But the overall feeling the frantic base provides must remain there. As for now, no version of the song can be loosely compered to the original. And the HDR one is the worst by far.

The Sega CD probably has the highest percentage of good 2D games compared to bad games of any system. Eternal Champions, Illusion City, Popful Mail, Lords of Thunder, Android Assault, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, Revenge of the Ninja, etc.

And the reason I can’t unequivocally support Baldur’s Gate II is because Ultima VII (and then Serpent Isle) executed the “epic but linear” CRPG concept just as well and Daggerfall exemplifies sandbox CRPGs (more so than later, more popular TES games), to speak nothing of traditional JRPGs, SRPGs, ARPGs, dungeon crawlers, etc.

As for 90s consoles, 32X games have really beautiful sprites; most of the stuff wasn’t good but Knuckles’ Chaotix and Virtua Racing Deluxe are reason enough.

3DO game quality on a whole is definitely better than Jaguar though. And Neo Geo in the same category? Sounds like you’re just lumping expensive 90s systems together… I’ve actually got all these systems and most of the games I ever wanted for them but they sure don’t captivate me.

Anyway, 3DO ST actually wasn’t the only console version of ST available back in the day but let’s not discuss the other version… Let’s just say the 3DO’s no old characters and missing animation frames (and even the PC version’s bugs) was a blessing compared to the alternative. And since de facto rules insist that I include random ST trivia in all of my posts: even though everyone knows HSF2 has the same arrange soundtrack as the 3DO ST version (and less known is that this arrangement actually originated from the FM Towns version of SSF2), the subtle difference is that only the 3DO version has a couple of minor sound effect additions like crows cawing in England.

The HDR version is the best >:|

Probably the only HDR stage music I like.

LOL, studtrooper! Fun shit!

Popful Mail! Oh my gosh… good stuff right there.

I appreciate you’re attempt to reign in support for BG2, but Ultima VII for me just isn’t on that level. It’s close, but I have to respectfully disagree with yothere my friend.

Yeah, the 32X wasn’t a bad idea… it just had no worthwhile software support, how many great consoles can we say that about it seems? The 32X though was kind of the first nail in a line of continuous failure for Sega of America which ultimately doomed it. The Saturn couldn’t compete Stateside, the Dreamcast (one of the best systems ever made) couldn’t overcome the advantage of the DVD player in the PS2… eh… Talking about Sega will make me cry so let’s move on…

I can’t speak to you’re superior knowledge of Street Fighter 2’s inner workings… I mean… that’s just ridiculous knowledge right there. That’s good stuff.

The HDR remixs I think were always going to be hit or miss on people right? I mean they took OC Remixers (who are good at what they do) and said, hey, you remix these famous tracks and we’ll put them in. I mean when you give remixer’s license they’ll go a hundred different ways. I actually commend Backbone on picking what are really more of the conservative remixes they could have done. But Ryu for Four Pianos () should have TOTALLY been the Ryu theme… but it would have been a radical departure from its classic instrumentation…

I actually like Vega’s HDR music as well… just for the record.

In the end, Megaman X>All. Close thread.

WHA??? Close thread? I THINK NOT GOOD SIR!

Give me a better Megaman game than Megaman 2… That game doesn’t exist. And lets be honest, the last Megaman X was… depressing.

I think Cammy as a character has the best overall collection of themes. I present:

And the best SF4 theme remix:

I main Vega so nobody can say I’m biased. Suck it haters.

Silver Rain, you have summoned the beast by that comment.

Partially the reason why I approve of the X (and most recently the Zero series) series over the Megaman series is because MMX2 was the first game I ever played. I clearly remember holding that SNES controller in my hand as a kid and constantly dying on Wheel Gators stage. I felt accomplished when I reached him even though he wailed on me. THEN, I remember when my brother bought one of those 6 face button controllers for the SNES. I slapped that turbo on and went to town on Bubble Crab and ran up and down the hallways in my house in tears of joy for beating him.

All that said, MMX>Megaman in every way possible. The only way I could possibly see Megaman being better is for nostalgia purposes. There’s no way this:

Is more epic than this (SERIOUS MEGA JIGGLYNORRIS SPOILER WARNING):

Besides, you could argue MGS is depressing, and that series has a better storyline than any Final Fantasy I’ve played.

Well I think Nostalgia has so much to do with everything right? I mean what we first remember is what we remember best. I have nothing against the X Series… If you had said rank Megaman / X games I would have put MM2 first then probably X1/2/3 next. But for me, Megaman has never been about story, its about level design and challenge. MM2 is the best designed most challenging Mega Man ever made. X1/2/3 are brutal and fun. But ironically, I have fond memories of MM8 because it was the first MegaMan I ever really played other than just picking it up at a friend’s house. MM8 is really not very good… but it was fun for me.

Oh I don’t mean to say the last X game is depressing emotionally, its depressing because (to me) its not very good… and saying MGS has a better story than any FF is just another preferential statement. I mean MGS is good, but for me the adventure isn’t as satisfying and I can’t play MGS at a pace of my choosing, which for me, is important nowdays.

Also: That video of the guy owning Bubble Man is AWESOME… oh man which also reminds me why Mega Man 2 is the best Mega Man ever made… the MUSIC!

I’m actually not a fan of Spain’s tune or any of the other “faux-ethnic” tunes (Honda Japan, China, India, to a lesser extent in others). Sagat Thailand, England, Las Vegas, and Guile USA are my favorite tunes in SF2. George Dragon’s arrangement for PC ST contains my favorite in-game version of every SF2 track without exception.

And if we’re taking about Rockman X2, Bubbly Crablos’s theme is excellent, I’d say even a bit better than the remix from X5. Original vs. X is overdone…

By last Megaman X game, are you talking about X8, or Maverick Hunter X? Because the latter was fucking insane.
