I suggest we discuss:

Best or Best-est RPG ever ?
And… this thread has officially been derailed! lol
God bless.
I was just about to say that haha. This thread has had an epic derailment, and I don’t see it getting back on course anytime soon.
Among the best, but only if we have Thrones of Bhaal to complete it.
Anyway, I wouldn’t say this is being derailed so much as showing Mars how many other topics we share dis/interest in.
Best RPG ever is Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. DONE. Anyone play Deus-Ex for PC? Great friggin’ FPS ever. BTW - can anyone identify this CVS2 theme for me:

Fuck that. Half-Life is the most epic FPS ever.
lol, you guys arguing about rugyby and nfl players. NFL players couldn’t play in Rugby anymore than Rugby players could play in the NFL. Completely different body types due to the completely different nature of the game. Same reason NFL players couldn’t play Soccer or that Soccer players couldn’t play in the NFL.
Dudes that are 300lbs in the NFL are strong, but built for bursts. In a moment, they explode and overpower other 300lb dudes or hold them in check. An NFL play lasts what, 15 seconds? You seen those big dudes after a long play, sitting on the bench sucking on that oxygen tank? They’re built for power, not for running 80/90 minutes or more virtually non stop. Their hearts would give out. You might have some receivers who could play in Rugby, maybe as the 2nd line, the same way you could have some Rugby players play as receivers or safeties. Chabal is 240lbs or so. Troy Palomalu is 203 lbs, and you can’t tell me Troy is garbage. Hines Ward is also 205 lbs. Most receivers are around that range because unlike linesmen, they need to move in a hurry. Some soccer players weigh in around 180~200lbs.
Different sports = different conditioning = different body types. Rugby players are strong, tough and durable, and you’d be quite the silly goose to make the argument that they’re not. NFL players are meant to be explosive. We hear that term all the time during broadcasts - “look how he exploded off his line”. Soccer players come in 2 types: the Lionel Messi/Ronaldo body type (also see 99% of italian players) and then the Michael Essien/Ballack type.
And yes, I watch a metric fuckton of sports
Edit: also, on paper, Spain is hands down the favorite for winning the World Cup this year.
On another note.
I am easily the most handsome fighter on this sub-board.
Taking all challengers:

Oh and i just have to share this awesome thing i found:
Okay okay okay…
Shari… one… do you sleep? Just curious…
Two. Baldur’s Gate 2 SaM + ToB is Epic. Definetly one of the 'best-est" RPG’s of all time. Certainly the best computer RPG based on D&D ever made. Best RPG ever? I don’t know…
I mean its hard for me to overcome the nostalgia of say FF4 and FF6 to put BG2 over them. But if we’re willing to separate NARPG vs. JRPG and break it down further, I could probably give BG2 the best PC RPG ever made, to this day. But all the D&D bioware games were good. BG one, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment… all pretty good.
Noriega: ES3 is amazing, absolutly amazing. But its not the best RPG ever made. It’s the best sandbox ever made, but as an RPG, nah. The actual story itself was B- at best, but the sandbox and game mechanics were awesome, but I would probably put Fallout 3 above ES3 (barely) and well above ES4 (which gets hate, but isn’t bad).
Raakam: Who the hell do you think you are briniging logic and valid points into this arguement? That’s total nonsense, everyone knows all you need to play Rugby is a brain that resembles broken egg shells and to be 4’2" and 68 lbs… Seriously… your point is fair. Oh and Spain to win WC2010? This is the team that nearly blew it to the US in the Confederations Cup! My money is on Brazil.
MKC: Yes, the Lions are terrible. If they don’t draft Suh, I will have lost all hope for them. I grew up a Detroit sports fan because of my family’s connection to Detroit and have long since taken my adopted home town teams to heart, but I can tell you, GoldenArch is right, at least you still have the Wings.
Ganaleon: You may be the professor of HDR sir, but let’s be fair… this IS epic thread derailment, and its been glorious
Jiggly: Eh, I don’t play FPS’s, who cares…
But I’m totally with Shari on this discussion of BG2
Favorite Party Member: For me, has to be Viconia… Gotta love that attitude! (And though he sucks…) Minsc is absolutly hillarious. I mean you can’t deny the power of the Miniature Giant Space Hamster! Discuss.
Around 3 hours per night.
Favourite party members is hard to decide…
I love them all.
But if i had to do top 3 in no particular order:
Viconia
Edwin
Korgan
Boy did this thread take a (few) wierd turn, LOL. I blame you Mars, see what happens when you say crazy things like you’re going to retire!? LOL.
Best RPG talk and no mention of Chrono Trigger?
Also, while we are de-railing, I was thinking about best adventure-type games the other day and couldn’t for the life of me remember the name of the Konami game on SegaCD, the one with the Blade Runner like plot (cop chasing andriods that look like humans). The Metal Gear Solid guy directed it. It’s driving me crazy! LOL.
Edit: Just remembered, Snatcher! Great name, LOL. One of few games that made SegaCD worth it (ugh, all those FMV games).
Don’t hate on the Sega CD! Lunar: TS and Lunar EB were released on the Sega CD! Psssh… don’t be hatin’.
CT absolutly belongs in the discussion for best RPG’s of all time. The three kings of the Super Nintendo are FF4 / FF6 / CT in whatever order you want to put them. All of them have legit arguments as the best RPG of its era… damn you Square, why’d you have to stop being so damn awesome??? But like I said about BG / ES3 / JRPGs, they really deserve to be separate categories. ES3 is an amazing sandbox type game, but it’s not the best “rpg” in my opinion. BG 2 I think is arguably the best Western Style RPG ever made, but its so hard to compare against prototypical JRPGs because the formulae are so different between the two and in large part what they want to accomplish can be so different. They both want to tell story but what they put the focus on is so different between the two… it can be hard to judge one against the other.
But you’re point on CT is well taken, that deserves instant mention for best RPG of all time, now where the hell is my real sequal Square??? HUH? IF CAPCOM CAN FREAKIN’ MAKING MVC3 YOU CAN GET OFF YOUR DEAD BEAT ASSES AND MAKE A REAL CHRONO TRIGGER SEQUEL!!!
Shari: … 3 hours? I got more sleep than that as a married father / Ph.D. student… But you know what? If you enjoy your life… then good for you! BTW, you and my dad would get along great! You’re choices in NPC’s are deliciously evil enough for him. I always rebelled against the Dark Side in my family and played the Paladin type… but even with that I think I still enjoy characters like Viconia (BG2) / Morrigan (DA:O) because they’re bitchy in such a well written way it comes across as genuine. Plus, how can you not be for an Ex-Drow priest of Lloth who left the underdark and didn’t turn all goodie on the surface world?
Thank you Possum for finally mentioning a worthy game. BUT, let’s not forget what came before Chrono Trigger… The Secret of Mana.
BTW, I like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I think they are TT. Unless you like O. Tuna Sandwich which is of course broken tier. Discuss.
Good point about the seperation of RPGs, Fallout 3 and FF6 (my pick as best ever) are completely different (but still both great) kinds games. Using an earlier example in this thread for FPS, a game like Deux Ex or Bioshock (which are both only technically FPS’es) are way different from a game like COD4:MW. They are fun in different ways.
I got a lot of enjoment out of my SegaCD, but the very fact that it came with SewerShark is a big strike against it, LOL. I’m not even going to bring up the Marky Mark game.
I did actually enjoy the FMV, first person fighting game (Supreme Warrior? Something like that). I had that for my 3DO. Does that count as a fighting game? LOL. It was fun in a cheezy, 70’s Kung-Fu movie kind of way.
Edit - Decoy - Crunchy PB is God Tier. You can keep the Jelly. LOL.
FF6 is a VERY respectable choice. Very defendable. Great cast, great writing, great plot twists, cool battle system, great music. Lots to like there.
Indeed, overgeneralizing genres leads to comparing apples to oranges. That doesn’t mean we can’t have legitament preferences for one over another, but we can compare them on separate merits and still decide objectively that one is an overall better game than another or an overall better experience than another. It’s why I don’t trust video game writers to review RPG’s. They’re all a bunch of FPS, Action/Adventure Fanboys. Most of which judge RPGs on the same (or simliar) merits to those types of games whose function is completely different.
Why you gotta hate on SewerShark? Yeah its terrible but when you first put it in did you think it was terrible? No, it was like the coolest thing ever in gaming… for 5 minutes… You know what else I really enjoyed on my Sega CD? Eye of the Beholder… Great RPGs, EotB, Lunar, Lunar 2… man the Sega CD was really awesome…
Ummm… I refuse to commentate on anything 3DO related, especially first person fighting games, that I’m sure I could youtube and forcibly vomit on…
Decoy: The only Secret of Mana game that deserves mention in the greatest of all time is Seiken Densetsu 3, which was never released stateside so… Secret of Mana is a solid B series in my book, but Action RPG’s have never been my schtick. Also, you can’t just say PB&J is Top Tier. There’s clearly a tier of Peanut Butter and Jelly based on what type of Jam you use. Strawberry? Grape? Blackberry? Those are all differently tiered and some are clearly superior to others.
O. Tuna is completely broke (Fatty Tuna), just like O. Sagat, hence Sirlin remixed it, made it better than N. Tuna (Canned Tuna) and thus R. Tuna (fresh, but not fatty) is viable but not quite as broken. But surprisingly, both N. Chicken and R. Chicken have better matchups and combinations and have more assist options.
Hey I loved my 3DO! Even though I got just for ST, LOL. There were a lot of fun games. Return Fire was great, decent port of Samurai Showdown, that wierd strategy game with the dude from Growing Pains where you protected cows (lOL), Road Rash (best version of Road Rash ever).
Speaking of Road Rash, why has that game not made a comeback?
Every remake of road rash was terrible. Oh and I disagree, the Genesis had the best version of Road Rash… but eh… But there is something appealing about hitting someone with a spiked baseball bat when you’re travelling at 180 MPH on a really nice bike…
You can try to defend the 3DO but it belongs in the same sentence as the Jaguar and Neo Geo… failures.
If this thread gets any better, its goign to be a clear Thread of the Year nominee… let’s keep it up!
Everyone here is forgetting Super Mario RPG. Geno FTW.
3DO a failure?! You can’t argue with the only home version of ST at the time and a game starring Kirk Cameron! LOL.
And the Neo Geo was awesome, just no one could afford it or the games, LOL.
I owned a lot of systems and the only one I regret is the 32X add-on for the Genesis. I’m still mad at Sega for that one! But then, I never had a Jaguar, LOL.
You should look into playing Policenauts. It’s pretty much a spiritual sequel to Snatcher released shortly before MGS. It was just fully fan-traslated a few months ago for the PS1 version.
